In the manga, Hisoka seems way less interested in childs, but only in fights. There are a couple of images where he says things "borderline" (and they are in the anime), but since it's only 1 image, it feels way less child-oriented. So the manga gives the impression of a guy looking a spout and expet it to grow for a fight.

In retrospective, Gon actually might have needed that punch. It gave him a concrete goal to work towards, as well as a sense that he can and will lose some fights in the future. And this fight at least he lost without any high stakes besides his pride, so it gave him an opportunity to work through his feelings.

The reason gon kurapika and leorio are forbidden fruit is that he sees alot of potential in them. Meaning they would bring the most satisfaction when they are fully trained. He knows they aren't close to being able to fight him evenly. He is what's considered a lust murderer. So his urge to kill was so strong he killed the next person he saw no questions asked which is unfortunate for brows guy.

This is one of my favorite episodes in the entire show. I feel like it’s truly when Hisoka evolves into the iconic villain he is. A bit of the mystery around him is unveiled when we learn he keeps Gon and his friends alive so he can kill them later when it’s more satisfying. At the same time, it makes him even more mysterious as to how he became so twisted. He’s likely my favorite villain of all time

Something that’d I like to say is Hisoka does have BLOOD lust. The only things he loves are fighting and killing strong opponents, nothing else, his motivations are fighting. He will keep Gon alive, as he said, till he is WORTH killing, reasons why he let Kurapika and Leorio go, why he normally doesn’t just go on murder springs, because he wants potential to reach it’s peak so he can be the one to snuff it. The only times he’s killed so far were when he was targeted directly, or when he literally had to kill the dude this episode to quench his blood thirst but he has NO interest in fighting or killing people who are WEAKER than he is. A lot of people nowadays only take works and their characters at face value, when most authors will create them with depth for a reason, but when one refuses to actually see what’s intended and only take what one perceives, that’s when misconstruction happens.

Sooo Togashi, the mangaka who created HunterXHunter and Yu Yu Hakusho quite often works himself so hard for so long that his health quickly deteriorates. It's a common thing amongst manga creators but Togashi especially is known for it. A lot of us worry that togashi will burn out before ever finishing HunterXHunter.
