The author of Tokyo Ghoul was such a fanboy of HxH that he created a fanfiction manga of Hisoka's backstory with permission from HxH's author and it's actually pretty good so there's a lot of debate in the HxH community if it's canon or not.

Star Wars, for example, had an entire expanded universe with various artists producing movies, animated shows, comic books, novels, and video games, the vast majority of which were canon in spite of the fact George Lucas had little to nothing to do with much of it. That is, until Disney bought out the franchise and executed Order 66 on the entire canon, slapping their garbage alternatives over the top of it, which was written by people who had no love for the series, some of which had clearly never even watched the original trilogy. They defecated all over the legacy, left gaping holes in the lore, contradicted long-standing canon, and called it a day... 😿 Countless hours of hard work by a dedicated fanbase, meticulously crafted details, all cast aside in a single instant. Disney could have coasted off of building onto what was already there, but I guess that was too much work for them.

I love the conflicted feelings about Hisoka 😂 He is a perfect example of a character you love to hate/hate to love. This fight is when I stopped being a passive watcher of the show and became fully invested, to this day it’s probably my favorite shonen! Also when Ange muttered “the properties of rubber and gum” line I got so happy, definitely hold onto that crucial information!

Something I only noticed from watching your reactions to this, in a previous episode it was said that Nen has an easier time being channeled through an item that someone has an attachment to... and Hisoka names all of his abilities after things he's nostalgic for or fond of. Like I wonder if that aspect of Nen favoring things you're attached too emotionally extends to your Aura itself. Whatever the case, HIsoka uses this side of Nen in some regard considering his fondness for the playing cards. It feels like he has optimized every little thing possible about his powers, and like I said, it really wasn't until watching this episode that it occurred to me that Hisoka is such a merciless and opportunistic fighter that he's even weaponized his own nostalgia...

Good catch regarding his number 4 and 44 during the exam. A little Easter egg regarding the number 4. Traditionally in Japanese, 4 is unlucky because it is sometimes pronounced shi, which is the word for Death. Him being given the number 4 is very deliberate by the author. It's kind and of the Japanese equivalent of the number 13 or Friday the 13th

Listen Ange, there's no problem in liking Hisoka, it is all fictional. And he is my favorite character of the show! But there IS a problem if you forget that Bungee gum has the properties of both rubber and gum.

Hisoka gets off on the act of killing strong people, to him its a form of sex. It's much like how serial killers(which is what he's based off of) are turned on sexualy by their method of killing. What Hisoka is interested in romantically is a different story, he was genuinely sincere when he asked her out on a date.

Number 4 in Japanese means "death", the author of hxh usually describes Hisoka as the Grim Reaper, he also drew Hisoka as the Grim Reaper in the chapter that Hisoka beat and killed Kastro. Which means that wherever Hisoka goes, he brings death with him
