Historian Pushpesh Pant on What Makes Taj Mahal, Mughals So Iconic | The Quint

“This is not the first time the Taj Mahal has been denigrated. This will pass too,” says historian Pushpesh Pant, who seems confident that the storm that has been created around the iconic Mughal monument is really just empty clouds thundering.
Even as BJP MLA Sangeet Som calls the Taj Mahal a creation of ‘traitors’, and other members of the party (which currently runs the state that is home to the 17th century mausoleum), claim that it is really a Hindu temple, Pant reminds us what makes the Taj so iconic.

Studying history has a purpose which is to learn from it and not repeat past mistakes. It is not a novel to be put down and forgotten. After all what happened in your life just 30 seconds ago is also now just history. If you forgot what happened 30 secs back you would probably be diagnosed as having Alzheimer’s. Which is unhealthy. Construction of Taj Mahal started in 1632 and in the same year there was a famine. I am glad he decided to build Taj Mahal with the funds and allowed 3.5 million people to die of hunger. That is how he controlled population and gave us a beautiful monument. That is what you call a master-stroke .

The Pallavas and Chalukyas were always fighting. The Marathas, according to many accounts were rape specialists. The Vijayanagara kings assassinated each other to gain power. That is the way the throne is won. Religion can be used to gain and maintain power, but irrespective of that the method is the same.

The past is where it should be - in the past!! So many kings & emperors, be it Hindu or Muslim, killed people and used women. But that is all "history.". It wouldn't matter to those long dead, what you keep cribbing about now in the present. All those keen on making Taj Mahal a issue, really need a brain check. What development has been done in UP? How many companies have been reached out to open branches/factories in this state to create jobs? When would the law & order and infrastructure be pulled out of their miserable condition?? These are the issues that should matter. Laborers were beaten again in Mumbai, neither the earliest one not the current party really bothered to check the issue. He is not a historian, but repeating a myth, created by Alexander Cunningham, the first director general of the Archeological Survey of India. Taj Mahal is much older than the reign of Shah Jehan. He should read the book by PN OAK, proving that Taj Mahal was a Hindu fort, constructed long before the Muslims came to india. During Akbar's time, it went to Man Singh, Shah Jehan took it from Jagat Singh the grandson of Man Singh and converted the Siva Temple into a Mosque.

Did this historian do any scientific analysis of any material at the site of Taj Mahal.? Why is it a Mahal, a Hindu word, not a Perisan/Arabic word? How can you believe a polygamist like a Muslim ruler would build a tomb for only one wife? Did he build Tombs for other wives? Woman are not considered as worship worthy in this religion like in Hinduism you have a prime example of monogamy in Rama. Or you have Goddesses honouring woman. Or have intellectuals from Vedic period onward like Gargi and Mitreyi. Honoring woman is unique to Hindus. They were spoiled by a millennium rule of Muslims and Christians from whom they learned all bad things like treating women as inferior. So honouring women is not Islam characteristic. Shahajehan was no exception. It was easy to grab a Rajput building and claim it as their own. Was there any evidence in the Government records of constructing a marvel like this?
