So a little correction. Mansa Musa did indeed bow. But in a loop hole way that you kind of mentioned. The Sultan wanted to meet him and he kind of had to meet in order to make his way through Cairo. So after he refused, the go betweens workout out a solution. So when Musa met the Sultan, he saalamed and said, “I bow to God.” So he did indeed bow. But it wasn’t for the Sultan per say.

The value of gold dropped because the supply increased. It's noteworthy that the reason the Mali empire was so rich in gold was because Mali was the source or controlled the route through which the gold of West Africa flowed up into Europe and Asia, which for much of the medieval comprised the majority of all gold in Europe, at least. Other West African states controlled this before and after. Eventually, they faced competition with the rise of European sailing fleets which could circumvent these trade routes, and then eventually when colonization resulted in massive influxed of gold and silver from the new world. It's also suspected the reasons for Mansa Musa's generosity was less genuine charity and more about manipulating opinion, and attacking the Cairo gold markets, but that's speculation. The gold brought along was also used to pay intellectuals and experts to return with him to Mali

I can't speak for everyone obviously but I personally did learn about Mansa Musa in school. I did take AP history classes and I think that's a big part of why most don't hear about him. In regular level classes they take things slower and as a result they tend to focus on the history that has had a more direct impact on the society we live in. Mansa Musa was a fascinating person but if we are being honest, he had pretty much no impact on the Western world. That doesn't diminish anything he did, but it does impact how important it is to teach. The more advanced classes that move more quickly are able to cover more topics, and that's when Mansa Musa comes in.
