His discology includes a number of hip-hop parodies; my favorite of those is probably "It's All About the Pentiums" (a parody of "It's All About the Benjamins" by Puff Daddy). "Hardware Store" (recommended by others in the comments here) is an excellent showcase of his vocal dexterity.

Then, Neil DeGrasse Tyson shows up and provides the answer as 'i' in his verse.

It also refers to the fact that "i" (aka the square root of -1, which gave birth to imaginary numbers), was theorized but not accepted nor well known by mathematicians back then, so for Newton it wouldn't be a valid answer, and later by saying "little calculation" Neil implies that what Newton thought was nearly an impossible math equation is almost trivial now with how maths has evolved ever since Newton was around (we now know that it has 64 possible answers, with 1 and -1 on the real group and 62 others, including "i" and "-i", on the complex group) It also sets up a wordplay on how Neil *_is_* literally the answer because his body came from the equation written on the chalkboard in the video lol

Newton spent the back half of his life exploring the then current theories of alchemy, pursuing the ultimate expression of its art by transmuting substances. To say he wasnt doing science is to presuppose that anything that has been disproven in modern times, in the past, wasnt science even then. It was considered science in his day, and he approached it scientifically. Its only because of his work and the work of others that we now know that alchemy is an insufficient and inaccurate theory of matter. We replaced it with chemistry.
@alanp33343 жыл бұрын
I like how Science of Discworld 2 explained it -- Newton was at the turning point in history where alchemy and mysticism became scientific discovery, and had a foot in both worlds. He didn't find anything because there was nothing TO find, but Pratchett, Cohen and Stewart couldn't help but feel that if there was, then Newton would have found the basis behind alchemy.

"You're the shadow of the man you're standing in" could also refer to the other performers. Al Yankovic is undoubtedly the King of Parody. Which is exactly what ERB does.
@glahtiguy3 жыл бұрын
It's actually extremely clever. In math there is an unsolvable problem involving shadows cast by higher dimensional objects into lower dimensions. Imagine you live in a 2d world, and somewhere 'above' you (a dimension you cannot perceive) a 3d object casts a shadow onto your 2d world. Mathematically there is no way to calculate the size and shape of the object casting the shadow, no matter how much it moves or rotates or anything, there are always multiple mutually exclusive answers and you can never prove one to be correct over the other by just observing the shadow. Newton is saying his mind is on a higher dimension, and he *can* calculate the size and shape of the shadow Nye is standing in, but Nye cannot comprehend the brain casting the shadow. Solid solid bar, possibly the best ERB has ever produced.

Regarding the calculation at the end: Yes, the answer to ? is the imaginary, _i,_ but Isaac Newton didn't believe in imaginary numbers per se - he was with Descartes, Cardano, and Girad in describing calculations involving _i_ as "solution impossible" (Cardano even said it was like "mental torture" working with imaginary numbers) since imaginary numbers don't actually map to reality. The original equation actually did have ?? at the end rather than _i_ because Newton really, _really_ hated the concept, which wouldn't gain much traction until almost a century later, with Euler. So NDT tossing it back at Newton was basically kicking the ball back - "You think you're hot stuff? Well, _we_ got your equations' answer when you couldn't, d-bag" - so i personally think it's an adequate rebuttal for the rapid-fire equation bar Wierd Al Yankovic (Newton) popped in there.
@Songfugel3 жыл бұрын
One reason for this was that while imaginary numbers allowed you to calculate stuff you shouldn't have been able to calculate, as you said weren't "real" back then. That is, until quantum physics were discovered, they didn't have a "real" equivalent in our physical World, but they do now.

Newton published the Principa when he was 44, introducing calculus, the theory of gravity and the laws of mechanics. In the book, he also used the new methods and principles introduced to infer the shape of the earth, calculate the speed of sound and dismiss the heliocentric model (still controversial at the time) for the modern gravitocentric model, among other things. This book is considered one of the strongest influences behind the industrial revolution and remained the authority on gravity and mechanics until Einstein. He published a revised second edition at age 60. In his 60s, he developed an analytical framework for cubic curves/equations, along with postulates that he partly helped prove in his 70s, but the last of which weren't proven until after his death. That's what he did with "the back half of his life".

As far as Newton being into religion that is very true. You have to remember that up until recent history scientists were mostly religious. They thought God had created the universe and set things in motion. A lot of them were looking to prove it through science. As far as dying a virgin? Meh so what. Plenty of insanely intelligent people end up just a bit odd. There just seems to be a line of intelligence that when crosses makes you socially inept.
@grigorov19143 жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure, but i think at Newton's time "virgin" meant someone who was never married. They used "chaste" to say what we mean by "virgin" now. So technically he might not be chaste, but since he never married he is a virgin. *considering the fact he was a Christian, he was most likely also chaste tho

Fun fact arsenic used to be in the paste that kept wallpaper on walls and it could have also contributed to the demise of Napoleon after the Battle of Waterloo but Sir Isaac Newton also created calculus to explain where his brain was coming from in terms of the units of force and my dad teaches it or at least he used to at the University of Chicago but when you start using an ancient alphabet that still technically exists to explain numbers you have officially lost me. Also I think Bill and I was referring to the fact that Isaac Newton stuck a needle in his eye to see if he could get more precise separation of color for the visible light spectrum if I'm remembering my trivia correctly

Actually the Bible does reference dinosaurs. Behemoth(likely a large dinosaur like a brontosaurus or similar), dragon(likely a general term for multiple dinos), and a leviathan which likely represents a plesiosaur or other sea monster or a general term for sea monsters. The word dinosaur is not present, but ‘dinosaur’ is a modern word. The Bible often describes things using characteristics instead of using words we would name them. This includes the fact that the did not have the same name for a rhinoceros that we do today. They called a rhino a unicorn, meaning ‘single horn’. Many other civilizations illustrated and described dinosaurs before the ‘discovery’ of their remains. It’s not uncommon the come across depictions of dinosaurs existing during the same period as man in ancient art and literature.

Nah, Bill Nye got married in 2006 to Blair Tindall. it was later anulled, the whole situation got super-weird. Worth a read, just absolutely bizarre. 'whoever this guy is can rap.' My dude that is Weird Al Yankovic lmao

Everyone is pointing out that is Weird Al. Everyone has their favorite Weird Al song, however, I think the best one to introduce you to him would be "Fat" which is a parody of Michael Jackson's "Bad" It's one of his earlier songs, but it showcases his ability to parody nicely. He is one of those rare musicians that can really perform almost any genre incredibly well.

This ERBH is one of my favorites! Weird Al tares it UP! I watched the outtakes and it was surprisingly difficult to catch that apple while keeping his eyes on the camera.

He's definitely listened to some weird al stuff before this video. I'm just surprised he didn't recognize him. He pretty much looks the same other than his clothes.

This was before he started listening to Weird Al. In fact I think this was the video that got people to ask him to react to Weird Al.

There is no actual evidence that Newton was hit by an apple. He said he saw an apple falling and the idea of gravity came to him.

Ah this brings me back. The first time I saw this I got super excited seeing Weird Al was playing the part of Newton. Most recognize him pretty easily but some people are thrown, he is a unique niche I suppose, but he was particularly well known since I think the 80s.

I see that since this video you've discovered Weird Al. He is extremely talented and due to the nature of most of his work he probably doesn't get half the respect he deserves.
