Canoe Camp Climb

Жыл бұрын

Join Barb and I on a remote Adirondack Canoe Trip as we paddle the Bog River Flow to Hitchins Pond .... one of the most beautiful and remote Adirondack canoe routes. Our destination is hiking to the summit of the Hitchins Pond overlook (Or Lows Ridge as some people call it) where we take in amazing views of the Adirondack landscape... which include lakes, rivers, and mountains in every size, shape and form. Along the way we pass under a deeply-aged iron railroad bridge thats a landmark to the area... and later explore the historic ruins of the Abbott Augustus Lows empire where his business dealings in the late 1890's and early 1900's included wood products, maple syrup, spring water, and more. It is because of the two dams Abbott Augustus Lows built... that this area was inadvertently transformed into the paddling paradise that we enjoy today. The two dams we see today are modern replacements.

* IMPORTANT NOTE ON DRONE USE *
Before launching a drone be aware of the FAA rules on usage and restrictions. The Adirondacks also have their own set of rules regarding drone use. You are not allowed to launch and operate a drone from within the Bog River Flow boundary. Our shots were taken outside the no-fly boundary and the drone kept within our line of sight. A lot has changed in 25 years since I soloed that trip. Site 24 used to have a nice sandy pool and the rapid shoots were narrower. The old 2X4 bridge was washed out then - thank god for that new one. Was missing the esker hike just before the upper Oswegatchie where there was a bench (above (south) of the mailbox. The HUGE tree root stump at Inlet seems to be gone as well. That has a history behind it in the book, "Man Of The Woods". Thanks.

Hi Marty. 25 years ago you must have also enjoyed exploring the old ruins near the upper dam. Sounds like you have some great memories. I love this area... they closed the lower dam for construction upgrades that will take up to 3 years to complete so access to that area is closed... which is a bummer because I love paddling through there. You can still get back into Hitchens pond by taking the Horshoe lake outlet... which will be super tough once the water levels drop.

I was there years ago before that building was taken down (you walked past the old stone foundation) and I remember the old flowers also. Later we acquired some old bottles that had held Lowe's jam---for storage they were held in metal crates in the water below ice. Interesting find. It is a lovely area! Your video is great!

Thanks a lot Cecily. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have a good friend that was there when it was first opened to the public... and he was telling me about the buildings being intact as if someone just gone for the day. He said the bookshelves were still full of National Geographics. Cool that you found those old bottles.
