Hi, Russ, I'm so glad that you had the privilege to see our gorgeous state capital in Charleston, WV. Cass Gilbert is the architect who designed our state capital. I'm also glad that you had the privilege to see our museum. We have alot of great history in WV. WV became the 35th state on June 20, 1863. My family and relatives are WV natives. My parents grew up in Mannington, WV and my 3 sisters and myself frew up in Weirton, WV. My Grandfather, my Dad's Father, was a coal miner at the Rachel, WV coal mines, having worked in the mines for 55 years. My Dad worked at Weirton Steel for 40 years from 1951 to 1991. My Dad is a Korean War Vet, serving in the Army. Dad had a 2 year tour of duty. Sadly, I have lost both of my parents, lost my Mom in 2017 and Dad in 2020. My parents were in their 80s when they passed away. I have 3 older sisters, one sister lives in Tacoma, WA, one sister lives up in Northern Maine, in Aroostook County, and my other sister and myself, still live here in Weirton, WV. I'm the youngest of 4, and the only boy. My sisters spoiled me when I was little and I ate it up. Kudos to your KZbin Channel, Russ! I wish you safe travels! Talk soon.

The chandelier in the rotunda is on a motorized pully and can be lowered down for cleaning and servicing. The outside of the dome on the capital is covered in 23.5 carat gold leaf.

No...as a native Kanawha Countian and someone who currently lives 100 feet from the actual river, it's Kuh-Naw. With a drawn out A so it's more like Kuh-Naaw. I can always tell if someone is from out of town or many counties over by the way they pronounce it.

There is a town about 25 minutes west of Charleston named Hurricane, but it is pronounced Hurr-uh-kun.

Hehe - add me to the list of natives. My hometown is South Charleston, so I was in Charleston a lot. It's been years since I've been back there, so it's interesting to see how much it's changed. One of my cousins on Mom's side has the original survey papers of their property. They were done by a young man named George Washington. I assume they've been kept safe somewhere.

What a beautiful drive into Charleston ! The capital building is very impressive, just look at all that marble. The memorial park was also so beautiful, and the museum where I would like to spend a day with so much history preserved there. Thanks for the ride Russ ! Safe travels.

Hi Russ!! Always enjoy your videos. I live in Groesbeck, Texas about 45 miles east of Waco. 2 hours south of Dallas. I used to work in a Museum. In Florida. The reason they keep the light at a minimum is to preserve the artifacts. Light damages them. Thank you for your videos. God bless.

Congratulations on a great video! But in fact, it was more than that, a public service describing the history of Charleston, WV a city of 48000 people, in a state of 1.8 million, that has one of the grandest capitol buildings in the US. It also reveals that the state was created as a result of the civil war, during which it was a part of Confederate Virginia, but greatly admired President Abraham Lincoln. Also revealed are the patriotic sentiments of its people at the capitol grounds. I doubt there are a lot of people in the country that know its history. (Would the Democratic Party have a better chance in 2024 if President Joe Biden were replaced with WV Governor, and now Senator, Joe Manchin?)

I used to work in the capitol building on the second floor in the second window to the left from the river. I used to smoke out front between the columns, attend senate sessions in the gallery, and never realized how lucky I was to be in such a building until I moved out of state. Growing up 20 miles from Charleston, we always went on field trips to the capitol and it didn't seem like anything special to me at the time. Oh, and you missed the Capitol Street area downtown. That was the "old" part of town you wanted to see. The one you went through was Elk City, a neighborhood on the West Side, which is experiencing a bit of a renaissance since some young developers started doing things.
