Taking a look at the Hebrew Matthew and Hebrew Mark from Cochin India. This manuscript has a large number for first century markers to suggest this is coming from a Hebrew original source. We have started translating it and came across this amazing find and we couldn't wait to put this out. We hope you enjoy!

We are old now, but we have been telling Christians for decades that the Greek does not say what the Hebrew scrolls say & to go to the Hebrew or Aramaic writings. Their Pastor's in the U.S. tell them that there is nothing but the Greek. This is what they have been taught in the U.S. 'Bible Colleges'. This is disturbing that their own Shepherds do not know this & mislead. The Greek text also incorporates the names of Greek-Roman deities translating them into English such as: 'Joy", "Grace", "Mercy/merci", & "Glory". These were all pagan deity names in the Greek language. They literally taught a nation to speak this way, all while worshipping the Most High. Also there was no "J" in the English language until the late 1500's. It was a "Y", and it was orginally "Allelu YaH" with no 'H' or "J". Term "Jah" was a pagan deity centuries ago. The Dead Sea Scrolls show how much the "Canonized Text" has been altered or simply removed from the Scriptural text. Rabbinical Pharisees literally removed any verse that pertained to a 364 day year and established a 'new Rabbinical Calendar". There is a Professor from the Hebrew University, RACHEL ELIOR, who gave a packed lecture on this & is an expert on Biblical History, Professor of Hebrew Philosophy & manuscripts specialist in Jerusalem. Using Jah was not wrong... When it was initially written in Bibles it was right. In Latin, the letter "I" was used both as a vowel and a consonant. When used as a consonant, it had a sound similar to the modern English "Y," as in the word "yes." In early Latin texts, the divine name was written with an initial "I," as in Iehovah or Iehoua. At the time, it would have been pronounced with a "Y" sound, making it closer to the Hebrew pronunciation. The letter "J" began as a variant form of "I" and was initially used interchangeably with it. In early English translations of the Bible, such as the King James Version (1611), "J" was used to reflect the Latin spelling, leading to "Jehovah" as a representation of the divine name. However, during that period, the letter "J" was still pronounced like the modern "Y," so "Jehovah" would have been pronounced more like "Yehovah." Over time, the pronunciation of "J" in English has shifted to the modern "J" sound (as in "jump"). Jah wasn't wrong. It became wrong as people's pronunciation drifted over time.

Actually based on logic Matthew 24:47 can only be a proof of the original Hebrew Matthew being translated into Aramaic before it was translated into Greek. Nobody questions that the "religious", "ceremonial" language was Hebrew and the Tanakh was still memorized in Hebrew. Joseph and Mary were considered highly religious people, who kept the Torah. They would have made sure that Jesus did memorise the Torah and the prophets and the psalms. That very psalm has been prayed as a ritual prayer at noon in the temple. So it would not at all make sense that Jesus joining the prayer at the temple from the cross, would change the wording to Aramaic. He could only have prayed in Hebrew, if anything about Jesus being a Jewish teacher is true. When this prayer is quoted in Aramaic that can only be an Aramaic translation. Now you even brought up manuscript evidence.

The word for father in the Cochin is איש which means manor or guardian, but later down she is engaged to her באל Baal or husband in fact it was this Joseph making this one her husband where her father was the word Ish not Baal.

Thanks very much for this video. I have 2 questions. (1) Could you give your opinion about the Aramaic script used in this manuscript? In the second temple period, did the Hebrew language lose its classical Hebrew script?. (2) In the Hebrew transcription as presented in the video, the name of Yeshua is written as "Yeshu" and not "Yeshua". It is interesting because the Syrian Christians in the Indian state of Kerala which is where Cochin is, call Yeshua as YESHU. Would you comment on this?

I might have some interesting insight for you. It is known that both Eusebius (3-4 AD) and Hiëronymus (4-5 AD) have written that Matthew wrote his original gospel in Hebrew. Hiëronymus even said that the Hebrew text was kept in the libraby of Cesarea up until then. So, if there was a Hebrew text of the Gospel available up until around the 5th century AD, and since Jesus was referring to Psalm 22:1 (vers 2 depending on the used versformat), it is not such a big leap to accept the fact that an old Hebrew text is found that actually used Hebrew in stead of Aramaïc. There is a lot discussion about the spoken languages in the first century AD in Israël. Greek and Aramaïc, but the Romans probably spoke Latin. Since Hebrew was the language of their religion, most jews probably spoke a (contemporary) form of Hebrew. For sure is that the scrolls of the old testament were (and are) still written in Hebrew. We know Jesus read from them. Out loud. So he for sure knew Hebrew and it only makes sence he referred to Psalm 22:1 in the language it was written in.

Shalom, this is a great question! In the Cochin MS 1.32/ MS 1.16.1 Acts, He uses the word טוהר (tohar). The root of this word is טהר (taher) and means "to be clean or pure." The word used is a Pi'el passive participle meaning, "He has cleansed." The part b of that verse is the following: "Whom Ha’Shem (Yehovah) has cleansed, he is not to be decreased in value."

People of Israel spoke Hebrew according verses Acts 21:39-22:2 and Acts 26:14. The Greek word "hebrais" means the Hebrew language. The text does not use the Greek word "syristi" known in biblical times, which means the Aramaic language. Yeshua spoke Hebrew not only on the cross, but also to Paul on the road to Damascus. Acts 26:14 (International Standard): "All of us fell to the ground, and I heard a voice asking me in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me? It is hurting you to keep on kicking against the goads.’" The theory about the Aramaic language is wrong. Aramaic was not even a common foreign language in the land. The Aramaic language was not even mentioned in the inscription on the cross. John 19:20 (International Standard): "Many Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek." Also archeological finds, e.g. The scrolls of Qumran and coins strongly support that in the time of Yeshua the people of Israel spoke Hebrew. You can google John J. A good test is to look at Matt 28:1. In the Greek it is σαββάτων which is plural, but is translated as sabbath (singular) in most English versions because the translators did not understand that you could have two sabbaths in a row (the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread was a sabbath [Lev 23], followed by the Friday night/Saturday sabbath). If the Hebrew word for sabbath is singular, it would imply a translation from the Greek to Hebrew. Note that the mis-translation of the Greek has resulted in the belief that Jesus died on a Friday, not on Thursday and this throws out all the calculations as to when he died (25/4/31). Wonderful to see the work that you are doing.

Good question! The numerals are actually Arabic numerals and were first used in the Codex Vigilanus or Codex Albeldensis in 976. Since we are looking at a copy of copies, these numerals were probably added later. How much later? That's unknown.

Q. If God named his son Yahusha HaMashiach, why did man take it upon themselves to change it to Jesus Christ? And why would we call him other than what God named him? Is man correct or God? A. We see in historical documents that the name “Jesus” did not even come into existence until the 1600’s when the letter “J” was introduced into our English language. So the name “Jesus” is only around 400 years old! The Greek "Iesus" comes from the name Zeus, the ruling God in the Greek pantheon. "Jesus” is a transliteration of a Latin name only ONE letter off “Ioesus” pronounced hey-sus - which has no meaning in Hebrew, but in Latin it means “Hail Zeus”. If Yahusha’s name had been transliterated into our language, it would have been Joshua. If the name was treated properly using the compound naming convention YHVH intended it would be YAH(weh)(ye)SHA shortened to “Yahusha” using the short contracted form maintaining the meaning of the name and fulfilling prophecy that the Messiah “came in the NAME of YHVH”. If the name was handled properly in Greek by the uninspired pagan scribes, it would hold true to the “meaning” of the name as given by the Angel to Joseph and Mary; then “shua” or salvation would have been translated “soterion or soter” not “sous”. So we see a gross mis-handling of the Messiah’s name at best but when you look back in history we see a Hyalinization of the name with the intent to give glory to the pagan god Zeus. One simply would need to open up their Greek Lexicon to know the truth behind this; below is the entry from The NAS New Testament Greek Lexicon: Strong's Number: 4992: soterion, adjective. Meaning saving, bringing salvation he who embodies this salvation, or through whom God is about to achieve it the hope of (future) salvation The name in Latin of the Messiah therefore would have been something closer to Iesoter or Iesoterion if the intent of the meaning of the name was honored by the Greek and Roman pagan scribes and modern day translators. The name would never have been “Iesous” taking on the suffix of every other Greek name given to give glory to Zeus… “us”. The reason behind this abomination is clearly seen. The name “Jesus” has the exact same suffix as the name of the Roman Emperor who created it: Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus. “Why” does every word in Constantine’s name end in “us”? It would only stand to reason that the all powerful Emperor would give a name to his new god in his own image with the suffix “us”. After all, Constantine believed himself to be re-incarnated Apollo (the son of Zeus). And he remade the Messiah in his own image then elevated that “image of the false messiah” in the name “Jesus” as god to be worshipped. This act of paganizing the messiah and worshipping an image of a man above YHVH is condemned by Paul in a letter to the church in Rome! Romans 1 21 Because that, when they knew YHVH, they glorified YHVH not as God (elevating Jesus/Trinity in their hearts as God), neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened (to believe a pagan lie). 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal YHVH for images made to look like mortal man (the image of “Jesus”) and birds and animals and reptiles (signs of The Zodiac). 24 Therefore YHVH gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about YHVH for a lie (pagan Trinity), and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen. When we simply take the first step and admit to ourselves the obvious, it becomes abundantly clear both “why” and “how” the name “Jesus” was easily accepted by a pagan population that worshiped Zeus, Hesus, Horus, Krishna, Julius Ceasar and the demi-god son Apollo the god of the sun. To the pagan Romans of their day, the name Iesous (Jesus Christ or JC) looked and sounded almost identical to their god-man Julius Ceasar or (JC). This is true today even in English (Julius / Jesus) even their initials remain the same an have nothing in common with Yahusha the Messiah. The English translation of Yahusha looks nothing and sounds nothing like “Jesus” it is “Joshua” or even truer still Yahusha. The obvious truth is the Messiah’s name was changed and he was given a name like every other Greek in honor of Zeus.

Matthew 1:21 (International Standard): "She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he is the one who will save his people from their sins.”

The book of Acts does not use this word at all, so the Greek word "hebrais" must mean the Hebrew language. These translations reflect the understanding that Aramaic was the common language of the Jewish people during the time of the New Testament and was closely related to Hebrew. The consistent identification of the language as Aramaic by biblical scholars across multiple translations indicates a scholarly consensus regarding the linguistic context of this verse.

@@That_one_introvert.If someone translates "hebrais" to mean Aramaic, that is obviously a mistranslation, which may be due to the misunderstanding that the Hebrew language was dead at the time of Yeshua. This is not true. Josephus made a distinction between Hebrew and Aramaic in his books. He also said that he spoke to the people of Israel in Jerusalem in Hebrew. It is obvious that the people of Israel still spoke Hebrew in AD 70. A lot of research has been done on this topic and there are new findings. There is no longer a consensus among scholars that Yeshua spoke Aramaic or that the New Testament was written entirely in Greek. There are many studies, books and PhDs in various fields according to which Yeshua spoke Hebrew. I have recently written a lot about this topic on my blog.

The word אֲרָמִית ('ărâmı̂yth) refers to the Aramaic language, which isn't particularly relevant here. I already clarified that, according to Jastrow's Aramaic-Hebrew Dictionary, the term Hebrew (Ebrayth) can also refer to the Aramaic language. If many scholars translated the word Hebrew to Aramaic, it may be worthwhile to explore the insights and knowledge they bring to the table. Rather than simply asserting that they mistranslated the word.

If the Greek translation is used it will quote from the LXX, if it is in Aramaic it will use the Targum, and if in Hebrew it uses the Hebrew words, it is interesting to see that the Hreek actually uses the Aramaic word sabachtani, and shows the marker that the Greek translated primarily from the Aramaic, there are many Greek NT, transliterations from Aramaic, so Greek is two languages removed from the Hebrew, so primarily the New Testement was written in Hebrew primarily, and possibly Aramaic since some of the letters were written to those in exile, but it’s possible Paul may have written some of his letters in Greek, it’s easy to want to defend the position on primacy when it’s possible that different texts or letters to the exiled believers, which may be written in one one of these three languages. Just like the book of Daniel it was written in Hebrew then switched to Aramaic and then back to Hebrew, To the Jewish people Aramaic was the language of the exile, since we are in Exile it’s important to read the Aramaic and Hebrew, in fact the Cochin has many Aramaic words imbedded within it. Unfortunately the Cochin Matthew was most likely transcribed from the Shem Tov tradition but actually has many corruptions within it, from possibly Portuguese with some Spanish transliterations, and is different from Shem Tov, it definately got into the hands of a scribe that used some European words such as many of the names like Simon as Pedro lol, also at Yeshua’s crucifixion it says something like it being on a Friday lol, so Cochin Matthew does have a lot of corruptions, but nevertheless it is Hebrew but has seen its changes, whether or not it’s a translation from possibly a Catalan gospel is yet to be seen. I would say that Nehemia Gordon has a very pure Hebrew Matthew that was not in the collection of the Shem Tov collection. Also unfortunately another corruption is when Yeshua said the scribes sit in the seat of Moses there fore do what they say, but Nehemia version says do what he says as in do what Moses says, instead of they as in the Pharisees.

I always felt that the parallel Hebrew for that would have probably been "shachachtani", meaning "forgot about me". Well, the question wasn't what Jesus was quoting, the question was which language Jesus spoke. In extension, using Aramaïc or Hebrew words in translations to Greek, especially when one is Aramaïc and the other Hebrew, is food for those who criticize the bible as the word of God, or those who believe the bible contradicts itself. Hello. At 16:55-17:05, you claim that you do not have any other Mark MS that has עזבתני, but that is not true. I am looking at another MS (Ms. Or. 150) that I have that contains Matthew, Mark, and Luke (Luke only goes to chapter 17), and both Matthew and Mark have the same Hebrew word. That even if the apostles did write the gospels in Greek for a wider audience that they simply used the Greek translations of thr OT available to them at the time, not that the actual spoken words of jesus were verbatim quotes from what we now call the septuigent spoken in greek (though im sure jesus did teach in greek from time to time as well, it likly depended on the crowed in question) . Because even if all the apostles were well versed in Greek (which they were) it was still a second language to them, and as such they aren't about to go rewrite a whole new Greek translation of OT verse that are quoted, they're going to use the available Greek translations.

The only reason why there's so many Greek manuscripts is because number one , the Hebrew manuscripts were the oldest and therefore were more apt to have wornout and number two , when the movement left Judea it was soon overwhelmed by Greco-Roman converts that didn't want much to do with anything "Jewish"

Q. If God named his son Yahusha HaMashiach, why did man take it upon themselves to change it to Jesus Christ? And why would we call him other than what God named him? Is man correct or God? A. We see in historical documents that the name “Jesus” did not even come into existence until the 1600’s when the letter “J” was introduced into our English language. So the name “Jesus” is only around 400 years old! The Greek "Iesus" comes from the name Zeus, the ruling God in the Greek pantheon. So we see a gross mis-handling of the Messiah’s name at best but when you look back in history we see a Hyalinization of the name with the intent to give glory to the pagan god Zeus. One simply would need to open up their Greek Lexicon to know the truth behind this; below is the entry from The NAS New Testament Greek Lexicon: Strong's Number: 4992: soterion, adjective. Meaning saving, bringing salvation he who embodies this salvation, or through whom God is about to achieve it the hope of (future) salvation The name in Latin of the Messiah therefore would have been something closer to Iesoter or Iesoterion if the intent of the meaning of the name was honored by the Greek and Roman pagan scribes and modern day translators. The name would never have been “Iesous” taking on the suffix of every other Greek name given to give glory to Zeus… “us”. The reason behind this abomination is clearly seen. The name “Jesus” has the exact same suffix as the name of the Roman Emperor who created it: Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus. “Why” does every word in Constantine’s name end in “us”? It would only stand to reason that the all powerful Emperor would give a name to his new god in his own image with the suffix “us”. After all, Constantine believed himself to be re-incarnated Apollo (the son of Zeus). And he remade the Messiah in his own image then elevated that “image of the false messiah” in the name “Jesus” as god to be worshipped. This act of paganizing the messiah and worshipping an image of a man above YHVH is condemned by Paul in a letter to the church in Rome! You would need to understand the Hebrew grammar. When His Name is shortened, it is "Yah." However, when it is spelled in its entirety, the vowel sounds change from "Yah" to "Yeh." Now some argue that the vav has the "w" sound whereas some say the vav has the v sound. And when you do a comparative analysis to other semitic languages, it appears to be the "v" sound. Therefore, the lengthening of His Name would be "Yehovah." God's name YHWH is transliterated Yehovah. According to grammar, a name must have at least three vowels, so Yahweh is out of the question. The name Yehovah has stress on the last syllable, so the name is shortened based on the first letter and the last two letters to Y-ah (YehovAH). When Yehovah is added as part of theophoric names, the construction Ye- or Yeho- is used in the front part of the name, and if the name is added to the end, then the letters -yah or -yahu is used.

Good question! The numerals were first used in the Codex Vigilanus or Codex Albeldensis in 976. Since we are looking at a copy of copies, these numerals were probably added later. How much later? That's unknown.

I visited the Synagogue in Cochin in the late 1970's when an official kindly took out the Torah scrolls for me to see - long before the current tourist restrictions were imposed. My family, though not Indian, have a long history in India. From memory I think the earliest verse divisions first appeared in the Geneva English NT of 1557. They are not in the 1526 Tyndale NT. I remember reading somewhere many years ago that it was Robert Estienne (Stephanus) who devised the verse divisions in the NT while on a journey between London and Paris in the 1550's. I don't know if the verse divisions were in Estienne's Greek NT printing of the 1550's - I haven't checked. However it would appear that the copyist of the Cochin NT had access to either the Greek or or English NTs in order to insert the verse numbers in Arabic numerals (unusual for a Hebrew manuscript) in the correct places. It looks to me that these were added at the time of copying and not added later as space is allowed in the text for these numerals. Baruch HaShem

Shalom, in Psalms 22:1, it actually does say, "my God, my God." When Yeshua quotes from Psalms 22:1, He is saying the same. Now, what I think you are trying to say is that He spoke the "protosemitic" language, which is nonsensical. He wouldn't have spoken a language that no one would comprehend since that language and of course, the Hebrew language has made grammatical shifts throughout the generations.
