Taking a look at the Hebrew Matthew and Hebrew Mark from Cochin India. This manuscript has a large number for first century markers to suggest this is coming from a Hebrew original source. We have started translating it and came across this amazing find and we couldn't wait to put this out. We hope you enjoy!

Working my way through "Against Heresies" by Irenaeus, in defending why there are exactly four gospels, Irenaeus notes that Mark, Luke, and John were written in Greek, but Matthew was originally written in Hebrew. This is consistent with the report of the earliest Portuguese explorers in India (Cochin), that they found a small group of native Christians who only had the Old Testament, plus the Gospel of Matthew in Hebrew. This is what we would expect to see if, when the apostle Thomas departed for India, the only written gospel he had available was Matthew.

This is great. More people are discovering that the NT was originally in Hebrew and finding more evidence for this from within the text itself. Nehemiah Gordon was the first one I discovered this from. In the video below you can hear about how Nehemiah (and George Howard) found the 28 Hebrew NT manuscripts that Brian mentioned in the above video. The Hebrew Gospel of Matthew - Nehemia Gordon (Open Door Series 2) - NehemiasWall in you tube. (links can’t be posted here). These MS also help us to know that the Septuagint was being quoted from by later Greek writers of the NT as it was just the commonest language of the time. While the Dead Sea scrolls most closely match the Masoretic based Bibles.

The Cochin Hebrew New Testament is a 20th Century (Very new) Translation from the Greek texts back to Hebrew. It is NOT an historic source for Biblical Text! Date and Translator: The translation was made about 1808 by a scholar named Claudius Buchanan, a Scottish missionary and Orientalist, with the help of Colin Macaulay, a Scottish biblical scholar. Buchanan and Macaulay were involved in Bible translation and promoting Christianity in India. Source Language: The Cochin Hebrew New Testament was translated from GREEK, the probable original language of the New Testament, for most books, except Mathew and Mark and maybe a few more, and the oldest existing texts available. However, Buchanan's translation work was also influenced by existing English and Latin versions, as was typical in many Bible translation efforts of that time. Of course some books of the new testament were originally written in Hebrew, for sure Mathew and Mark, but this Hebrew original is long lost and the oldest we have is the greek collection of the Textus Receptus. This has been known for hundreds of years. No news on that as well. The Mathew 27:46 and Mark 15:34 small adjustment is made based on the Psalm 22:1 and not because of this modern Cochin Hebrew translation. The “adjustment” in the Hebrew or Aramaic text was made since the King James version or even before it. The meaning was long preserved. The Textus Receptus is primarily based on manuscripts that belong to the Byzantine text-type, which was predominant in the Eastern Roman Empire and later in the Orthodox Church. Some of the key manuscripts used in the compilation include: Codex Coislinianus (H): A 10th-century manuscript. Codex Claromontanus (D): A 6th-century manuscript. Codex Athous Lavrensis (Ψ): An 11th-century manuscript. Minuscule 2813: A 15th-century manuscript. It was first published by Desiderius Erasmus in 1516. The Freiburg Manuscript, “Universitätsbibliothek Freiburg i. Br.: Hs. 314”, is a translation from the year 1583, probably from the Greek text. The Cochin Hebrew is a translation from 1808 also from the Greek. For a text criticism the oldest has more authority over the new. That means it’s a "point" to the fact that maybe Jesus words on the cross were indeed in Aramaic. (1583 is much older then 1808). The man in the video said: "We are sitting on a gold mine". Maybe for his book selling revenues. The real treasure is given to us by God. Let us study the Bible in the translation we have at home with an open heart, because the Holy Spirit will teach us what we need to know from that. For comparing versions there are many online Bible translations as well. John 14:26 (KJV): "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." This video is a clear Propaganda to Sell Books and in a "Sensationalist news" style.

Although the Textus Receptus was published by Desiderius Erasmus in 1516, it was based on several late Byzantine Greek manuscripts from the 12th century and later. These Byzantine manuscripts were derived from earlier Greek texts that can be traced back to the first century. The Byzantine text-type began to take shape around the 4th century but is rooted in first-century manuscripts.

That really is a Hallelujah moment. It means what Jesus SAID was heard in Hebrew, recorded in Hebrew, and preserved in Hebrew, pre-Aramaic (40s), pre-Greek (40s), and CONCURS with the text in the Old Testament. If Jesus was speaking Hbrew here, then WHY did the people think he was calling for Elijah? The Hebrew Bible you're reading from naturally quotes Him in the Hebrew translation. This doesn't prove He wasn't speaking in the Aramaic Hebrew of His time. Why also the need to translate what He said, "My God, My God why have You forsaken Me?" if the Hebrew reader was reading it in Hebrew in the first place???

A question I have for a long time: In Matt. 13:55 and Mark 6:3 we read about the 'the brothers' of Jesus. There is an ongoing discusion if this are really brothers or maybe cousins, becouse the greek word can mean both. Is the hebrew more specific?

God is doing some wonderful things in these latter days - and many this year, with so many signs and wonders in the heavens as well. Good question! The numerals are actually Arabic numerals and were first used in the Codex Vigilanus or Codex Albeldensis in 976. Since we are looking at a copy of copies, these numerals were probably added later. How much later? That's unknown.

This is clear to anyone who reads ancient Greek, Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew. Too many idioms and puzzles which only work in Hebrew. But !!! Pay attention, the New Testament is a polyglot document. It contains puzzles in all the ancient languages. Don't make the mistake of thinking it is Hebrew only. It contains all of the Mediterranean culture with imbedded references to all of them.

Thanks very much for this video. I have 2 questions. (1) Could you give your opinion about the Aramaic script used in this manuscript? In the second temple period, did the Hebrew language lose its classical Hebrew script?. (2) In the Hebrew transcription as presented in the video, the name of Yeshua is written as "Yeshu" and not "Yeshua". It is interesting because the Syrian Christians in the Indian state of Kerala which is where Cochin is, call Yeshua as YESHU. Would you comment on this?

I might have some interesting insight for you. It is known that both Eusebius (3-4 AD) and Hiëronymus (4-5 AD) have written that Matthew wrote his original gospel in Hebrew. Hiëronymus even said that the Hebrew text was kept in the libraby of Cesarea up until then. So, if there was a Hebrew text of the Gospel available up until around the 5th century AD, and since Jesus was referring to Psalm 22:1 (vers 2 depending on the used versformat), it is not such a big leap to accept the fact that an old Hebrew text is found that actually used Hebrew in stead of Aramaïc. There is a lot discussion about the spoken languages in the first century AD in Israël. Greek and Aramaïc, but the Romans probably spoke Latin. Since Hebrew was the language of their religion, most jews probably spoke a (contemporary) form of Hebrew. For sure is that the scrolls of the old testament were (and are) still written in Hebrew. We know Jesus read from them. Out loud. So he for sure knew Hebrew and it only makes sence he referred to Psalm 22:1 in the language it was written in.

Hello. At 16:55-17:05, you claim that you do not have any other Mark MS that has עזבתני, but that is not true. I am looking at another MS (Ms. Or. 150) that I have that contains Matthew, Mark, and Luke (Luke only goes to chapter 17), and both Matthew and Mark have the same Hebrew word. This is a MS that, I believe, you do not have. I want to add that the Sweden and Paris MSS also have Matthew and Mark with the correct Hebrew word.

@@dralgarzathe Paris also uses the wayyiqtol, vav consecutive verb form which is nonsensical. That verb form was created sometime during antiquity and was never a spoken verb form. The Paris is clearly a translation with numerous modifications and they attempted to write it in Biblical Hebrew. I’m real cautious when it comes to that manuscript.

We can find a large amount of evidence in the New Testament that Yeshua spoke Hebrew as did the people of Israel. Convincing evidence is e.g. in Acts 21:39-22:2 and Acts 26:14, according to which the people of Israel spoke Hebrew. The Greek word "hebrais" means the Hebrew language. The text does not use the Greek word "syristi" known in biblical times, which means the Aramaic language. Yeshua spoke Hebrew not only on the cross, but also to Paul on the road to Damascus. Acts 26:14 (International Standard): "All of us fell to the ground, and I heard a voice asking me in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me? It is hurting you to keep on kicking against the goads.’" The theory about the Aramaic language is wrong. The Aramaic language was not even mentioned in the inscription on the cross. John 19:20 (International Standard): "Many Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek." When the angel announced the name of the baby boy to Joseph and Mary, the angel was evidently speaking Hebrew, because the sentence has a poetic pun typical of the Hebrew language, which does not work in Aramaic or other languages. The baby boy was to be named Yeshua, because "yoshia", which means "he saves." Matthew 1:21 (International Standard): "She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he is the one who will save his people from their sins.”

The term "Hebrew" was occasionally used interchangeably with "Aramaic" in ancient texts, including the Peshitta. Also according to Jastrow's Aramaic-Hebrew Dictionary, the term Hebrew {Ebrayth} refers to the Aramaic language.

The book of Acts does not use this word at all, so the Greek word "hebrais" must mean the Hebrew language. There are a large number of other passages in the New Testament from which we can know that the speeches were in Hebrew. Also archeological finds, e.g. The scrolls of Qumran and coins strongly support that in the time of Yeshua the people of Israel spoke Hebrew. Aramaic was not even a common foreign language in the land. You can Google John J. Parsons´ article: "Did Jesus speak Hebrew? Disputing Aramaic Priority".

These translations reflect the understanding that Aramaic was the common language of the Jewish people during the time of the New Testament and was closely related to Hebrew. The consistent identification of the language as Aramaic by biblical scholars across multiple translations indicates a scholarly consensus regarding the linguistic context of this verse.

This is not true. Josephus made a distinction between Hebrew and Aramaic in his books. He also said that he spoke to the people of Israel in Jerusalem in Hebrew. It is obvious that the people of Israel still spoke Hebrew in AD 70. A lot of research has been done on this topic and there are new findings. There is no longer a consensus among scholars that Yeshua spoke Aramaic or that the New Testament was written entirely in Greek. There are many studies, books and PhDs in various fields according to which Yeshua spoke Hebrew. I have recently written a lot about this topic on my blog.

The word אֲרָמִית ('ărâmı̂yth) refers to the Aramaic language, which isn't particularly relevant here. I already clarified that, according to Jastrow's Aramaic-Hebrew Dictionary, the term Hebrew (Ebrayth) can also refer to the Aramaic language. If many scholars translated the word Hebrew to Aramaic, it may be worthwhile to explore the insights and knowledge they bring to the table. Rather than simply asserting that they mistranslated the word.

Joseph was a builder (often translated "carpenter" but was more likely to work with stone... wood being rare). He would have had to speak multiple languages for work... Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and possibly some Latin. Jesus (and his half-brothers) probably knew all of those languages as a young man working for his adoptive father, learning the trade.

That even if the apostles did write the gospels in Greek for a wider audience that they simply used the Greek translations of thr OT available to them at the time, not that the actual spoken words of jesus were verbatim quotes from what we now call the septuigent spoken in greek (though im sure jesus did teach in greek from time to time as well, it likly depended on the crowed in question) . Because even if all the apostles were well versed in Greek (which they were) it was still a second language to them, and as such they aren't about to go rewrite a whole new Greek translation of OT verse that are quoted, they're going to use the available Greek translations.

@@anthonypolonkay2681 I agree with most of that but I don't think that they were so fluent in Greek , they would have been more proficient in Hebrew and Aramaic , Greek would have a third , fringe language to them , unfortunately , because the Greek manuscripts in existence are of the majority , most concluded that Greek was a dominant language in 1st century Judea but that's just true , there wasn't a mass migration of Romans into Judea , just soldiers and some of the aristocracy . The only reason why there's so many Greek manuscripts is because number one , the Hebrew manuscripts were the oldest and therefore were more apt to have wornout and number two , when the movement left Judea it was soon overwhelmed by Greco-Roman converts that didn't want much to do with anything "Jewish"

If the Greek translation is used it will quote from the LXX, if it is in Aramaic it will use the Targum, and if in Hebrew it uses the Hebrew words, it is interesting to see that the Hreek actually uses the Aramaic word sabachtani, and shows the marker that the Greek translated primarily from the Aramaic, there are many Greek NT, transliterations from Aramaic, so Greek is two languages removed from the Hebrew, so primarily the New Testement was written in Hebrew primarily, and possibly Aramaic since some of the letters were written to those in exile, but it’s possible Paul may have written some of his letters in Greek, it’s easy to want to defend the position on primacy when it’s possible that different texts or letters to the exiled believers, which may be written in one one of these three languages. Just like the book of Daniel it was written in Hebrew then switched to Aramaic and then back to Hebrew, To the Jewish people Aramaic was the language of the exile, since we are in Exile it’s important to read the Aramaic and Hebrew, in fact the Cochin has many Aramaic words imbedded within it. Unfortunately the Cochin Matthew was most likely transcribed from the Shem Tov tradition but actually has many corruptions within it, from possibly Portuguese with some Spanish transliterations, and is different from Shem Tov, it definately got into the hands of a scribe that used some European words such as many of the names like Simon as Pedro lol, also at Yeshua’s crucifixion it says something like it being on a Friday lol, so Cochin Matthew does have a lot of corruptions, but nevertheless it is Hebrew but has seen its changes, whether or not it’s a translation from possibly a Catalan gospel is yet to be seen. I would say that Nehemia Gordon has a very pure Hebrew Matthew that was not in the collection of the Shem Tov collection. Also unfortunately another corruption is when Yeshua said the scribes sit in the seat of Moses there fore do what they say, but Nehemia version says do what he says as in do what Moses says, instead of they as in the Pharisees.

@@nickstrickland4751 Nick, the Cochin was hard to read and not many people (two to three) actually read it and translated. The Gaster was the one that was thought to be a copy of Cochin and people translated it assuming it’s going to say the same in Cochin. Well it wasn’t an exact copy. Gaster was the one that was corrupted and changed and edited. Even changed words. Gaster comes from the same place and was along side of the Cochin which is why you are probably thinking that. The Cochin is not corrupted. BEI translated Gaster because the handwriting was neat and discovered it was corrupted and assumed the Cochin was too… it wasn’t. And that’s what my whole video series is about.

@@ProjectTruthMinistries Actually when I was with BEI we were assigned to transcribe the Cochin and compare it with Gaster, we broke off from BEI and I’m once again transcribing Cochin and comparing it to Gaster, we actually do have a transcription of the Cochin and unfortunately you can see many corruptions in it, that does not mean that there is much hidden truths in it I’m not saying that, but it definately got into the hands of Rabbis and most likely Catholic scribes, so when I am discussed the corruptions above they are from the Cochin not the Gaster.

A good test is to look at Matt 28:1. In the Greek it is σαββάτων which is plural, but is translated as sabbath (singular) in most English versions because the translators did not understand that you could have two sabbaths in a row (the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread was a sabbath [Lev 23], followed by the Friday night/Saturday sabbath). If the Hebrew word for sabbath is singular, it would imply a translation from the Greek to Hebrew. Note that the mis-translation of the Greek has resulted in the belief that Jesus died on a Friday, not on Thursday and this throws out all the calculations as to when he died (25/4/31). Wonderful to see the work that you are doing.

@@toosiyabrandt8676 No-one used our terms for the days of the week back then. 1 Nissan was the first visible moon after the vernal equinox. This meant that 14 Nisan was a full moon. This was the night that Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane. The next daytime, still Nissan 14 was when the Passover lambs were slain - 3pm, the same time that Jesus died. He was entombed at sunset. That night began the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Nissan 15) which was a sabbath according to Lev 23. The next day was the weekly sabbath (Nissan 16) and Jesus rose on the next morning at/before sunrise (Nissan 17). This fulfill the prophecy of Jonah, where Jesus said He would be in the heart of the earth for three days (Nissan 14, 15, 16) and three nights (Nissan 15, 16, 17). Note that this lines up with the original Passover where the Israelites left Egypt and were freed when the crossed the Reed Sea. It also fits the numerous references where Jesus said that He would rise on the third day (His body was entombed on 15th, 16th and early 17th) and the other references where He said he would rise after the third day (His soul was in Sheol on 14th, 15th, 16th and rose on the 17th. Fitting this to our weekdays gives a crucifixion on Wednesday afternoon and rising on Sunday morning. A Wednesday crucifixion does not fit with Jesus's prophecy of Jonah or His predictions that he would rise on the third day. A Friday crucifixion does not fulfill the Jonah prophecy or the predictions of rising after the third day.

Question for Project Truth: Does the Cochin manuscript contain embedded explanatory comments for the benefit of those unfamiliar with Jewish culture? For example, Mark 7:4 says, "When they (the Jews) come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers, and kettles." If Cochin is derived from an early, Hebrew-language manuscript, I would guess that Mark 7:4 would NOT be included, since Hebrew-speakers would not need to be told that the Jews wash their dishes.

Shalom, this is a great question! In the Cochin MS 1.32/ MS 1.16.1 Acts, He uses the word טוהר (tohar). The root of this word is טהר (taher) and means "to be clean or pure." The word used is a Pi'el passive participle meaning, "He has cleansed." The part b of that verse is the following: "Whom Ha’Shem (Yehovah) has cleansed, he is not to be decreased in value."

Actually based on logic Matthew 24:47 can only be a proof of the original Hebrew Matthew being translated into Aramaic before it was translated into Greek. Nobody questions that the "religious", "ceremonial" language was Hebrew and the Tanakh was still memorized in Hebrew. Joseph and Mary were considered highly religious people, who kept the Torah. They would have made sure that Jesus did memorise the Torah and the prophets and the psalms. That very psalm has been prayed as a ritual prayer at noon in the temple. So it would not at all make sense that Jesus joining the prayer at the temple from the cross, would change the wording to Aramaic. He could only have prayed in Hebrew, if anything about Jesus being a Jewish teacher is true. When this prayer is quoted in Aramaic that can only be an Aramaic translation. Now you even brought up manuscript evidence.

Well, the question wasn't what Jesus was quoting, the question was which language Jesus spoke. In extension, using Aramaïc or Hebrew words in translations to Greek, especially when one is Aramaïc and the other Hebrew, is food for those who criticize the bible as the word of God, or those who believe the bible contradicts itself. ​@@JRTIGER07 I'm no linguïst and not educated in Hebrew nor Aramaic. But according to those who are, yes, they are related. Both are Northwest Semitic languages. To my understanding that means they are related similar to the relation between English and Frence, or German and Dutch. There are words that can be understood easily, but most of the languages differ greatly. Also to my understanding scholars tend to believe Aramaic was widely spread, but not widely spoken before in Mesopotamië. After the Babylonian captivity the jews took their knowledge of Aramaic home and it became sort of the official diplomatic and administrative language. It gradualy became more used by others, but Hebrew continued to be the first spoken language for many centuries. Even when Aramaic became the first language for all people, Hebrew was still the religious language. Please let someone correct me if I misunderstood the relation between Hebrew and Aramaïc.

Even if they understood He was quoting palms 22. They still would think Palms 22 referrers to Elijah. Because they believe Elijah would be the suffering servant Christ, and then another Christ would be the warror ruling Christ. The Pharisees believed in two different Christ. They were mixed up. Herod the edomite/idumean offed all of the children because he did not want to lose the position as king of the jews. After he did that, over the years he offed all of the trueblood israelites of the Hasmonean family, even his wife and children... Then he offed all of the truebloods in political and religious leadership positions. They were all replaced by Idumean/edomite/canaanites. Psalm 22 is generally viewed as a psalm of lament, where David expresses his suffering and feelings of abandonment by God. The Greek used the Aramaic 'Talitha', whereas the Hebrew Gaster version of Mark 5:41 has no Talitha, only the Hebrew word for child, Yaldah. This shows that the Gaster version is a copy of the Cochin manuscript and that neither are translated from the Greek or Aramaic.

If we are going to be truthful, the Cochin manuscript may serve as a source for those seeking a Hebrew translation, but it does not demonstrate that the original New Testament was written in Hebrew. I found it! I want to thank GOD!!! I have looked at Revelation and has been a blessing to read it in Hebrew and seeing that the verses that I was viewing match with KJV and not NIV. The Cochin Hebrew New Testament is not ancient. It was translated into Hebrew by a Hebrew scholar in the 1700s. This makes sense because Hebrew was not a spoken language in Jesus' day. "In the Year 1741, Ezekiel Rahabi, the Dutch Diplomat and Principal Jewish merchant of Cochin started the translation of the Gospels to Hebrew, it is regarded as a Polemical rabbinical Hebrew translation of the New Testament, currently in Cambridge Library Manuscript Collections. These are counted as one of the oldest complete manuscripts of the Hebrew New Testament which includes Revelation. Later in the 1750s, the task was commissioned to Leopold Immanuel Jacob van Dort (ca. 1715-1761) a Dutch Jew who was converted to Christianity. He was a Christian missionary too. He is also known for his translation of the Quran to Hebrew and the Chronicles of Cochin Jews. Rahabi's purpose of commissioning the translations of both the New Testament and Quran was to understand his trading and diplomatic partners. "In the year 1806, Buchanan found two Hebrew New Testament manuscripts in a Jewish Synagogue in Cochin, India. Together, these two manuscripts contain the entire New Testament in Hebrew. Later this manuscript was wrongly named "Travancore Hebrew New Testament"."

The word for father in the Cochin is איש which means manor or guardian, but later down she is engaged to her באל Baal or husband in fact it was this Joseph making this one her husband where her father was the word Ish not Baal.

Good question! The numerals were first used in the Codex Vigilanus or Codex Albeldensis in 976. Since we are looking at a copy of copies, these numerals were probably added later. How much later? That's unknown.

I visited the Synagogue in Cochin in the late 1970's when an official kindly took out the Torah scrolls for me to see - long before the current tourist restrictions were imposed. My family, though not Indian, have a long history in India. From memory I think the earliest verse divisions first appeared in the Geneva English NT of 1557. They are not in the 1526 Tyndale NT. I remember reading somewhere many years ago that it was Robert Estienne (Stephanus) who devised the verse divisions in the NT while on a journey between London and Paris in the 1550's. I don't know if the verse divisions were in Estienne's Greek NT printing of the 1550's - I haven't checked. However it would appear that the copyist of the Cochin NT had access to either the Greek or or English NTs in order to insert the verse numbers in Arabic numerals (unusual for a Hebrew manuscript) in the correct places. It looks to me that these were added at the time of copying and not added later as space is allowed in the text for these numerals. Baruch HaShem

If we have the source texts that would give us more information. We simply need to pray and ask the Father to surface the source texts so that we can see the answers to things such as this.

As you probably know the Jerome Latin of this verse has an unusual reading not found in any Greek manuscript. It reads something like "And every spirit that dissolves Jesus, ( qui solvit Jesum), is not of God. This is the spirit of (the) Anti Christ whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world." I have seen it claimed that this wording came from an even earlier source and was quoted by early Christian writers in this form. I don't wish to take up more of your time. Shalom

So let's assume this manuscript is somehow an accurate copy of a first century copy. Does it change anything about what orthodox Christianity believes? ie the Trinity, the incarnation of God the Son etc? Even without this manuscript, who would ever claim Jesus didn't speak Hebrew? He was Jewish, born and raised in Israel. Of course he spoke Hebrew. He read the Torah and he dialogued with the scholars and Jewish leaders in the Temple.

Hebrew had not been spoken as a common tongue for over 400 years by the time Jesus was born. It was only used for liturgical purposes. Jesus would have been fluent in Aramaic and known a little Greek and some bible Hebrew.

Hi the word for ‘Rope’ and ‘Camel’ in Aramaic are really close and caused a mistranslation of the parable Jesus Yeshua told which doesn’t make any sense as a result! Being misquoted in countless sermons ! The eye of the needle evidently can’t have a ROPE go through it MUCH LESS A CAMEL! Aramaic Greek and Hebrew were being spoken in Judea in Jesus’s first coming, and the Greek Septuagint was also in use . Aramaic was common as well.

I'm really glad for your findings but what would be wrong if some of the words were Aramaic like "bar" or other It's definitely not the pang hellenized Greek. Also there is a lot of Aramaic dispersed throughout the tanakh. Blessings ONE LOVE!!!😂
