I am from this area, this is something we never expected. We don't get hurricanes here, the mountains have always protected us from them. There was no way for us to be ready for this type of thing. But here in Appalachia, we are strong, and we WILL get through this. Thank you to all the people that have already rushed in to help. The recovery will be a long and slow process, but we will bounce back, as we always do,.

I am from the area, too. Graduated high school before the schools combined. While the thought of serious flooding wasn't in our minds daily, the threats of such occurrences are known and have effected many families. Hugo in 88 or 89 did extensive damage comparable to this hurricane. I had family die from flooding in the area back in the 60s/70s. There are places along the New River back up in the Silas, Helton area that were flooded back then and still have flood waters in them because the landscape was changed. The often mythologized "40s flood" was comparable to this storm from what I was told by my grandparents who were born around 1920. Hard rains cause localized flooding and land/rock sides almost every year. A lot of the "hollars" and valleys owe their existence to centuries of water erosion. I say this as a reminder to the power of mother nature. She rules and we exist st her mercy. We become so involved in our everyday existences that we forget the dangers that are really always present. A big loss of "community" has happened over the last 30 years or so. I hope that such hard times as these can bring that back, and we can rely on our neighbors and our neighbors on us to build back most of what was lost, making investments and improvements where need be. I hope for the best for all residents of these mountains. Our lives have been interrupted, but we live on and hopefully learn some lessons from the experiences. My thoughts are with everyone struggling.

Having been to this area of the country many times I have to say the things that we love about the area, iconic Norman Rockwell beauty is also the thing that has devastated this area. The beautiful of the Appalachian, Smokey and Blue ridge mountains and the quiet streams make this area SO BEAUTIFUL AND PEACEFUL. Until 20 inches of rain turns peaceful stream's into raging river's. With mountain's on every side there's only so many ways for the water to escape. 💔💔 If there was an emoji for shattered heart I would use it. The people here are some of the most kind people you will ever meet. We're praying for all of you.

Took my wife and kids to Ashville/Hendersonville last year. We wanted to see if we would live in that area and figured we go check it out firs to get a feel for it. I LOVED that area. So beautiful. I've been wanting to live near mountains and rivers. It's the country boy in me. BUt this is honestly giving me second thoughts. Maybe being too close to water isn't such a good idea. I cannot say how many Hurricanes I've experienced. From Categiory 5 Gilbert in Jamaica in 88' to Category 5 Andrew in South Florida in 92' and every other tropical storm or hurricane that hit or grazed South Florida since. So, I've never been a afraid of Hurricans, but man, this is something else. Prayers for all those impacted. People will say things can be replaced, but that doesn't make it any easier. To not have a warm bed to sleep in. To see your personal belonging folding down some roadside. Yeah, mere things, but things that have meaning to us and some people don't have the finances to start over. Thinking how the US government can respond to the demands of Israel and the Ukraine at the drop of a dime and here we are how many days in and STILL nothing being done by the federal government. smh
@elizabetharnold5849
@elizabetharnold5849 2 ай бұрын
They are responding,and mobilizing. Did you expect them to parachute in? Every major artery into Tennessee,Nc and Georgia Mountains is washed out. A knee jerk reaction. As we all know living through this type of natural disaster,you are responsible for your own living for 3-4 days. Your neighbors are your best refuge. And that’s what we do there. Funny how nobody wants the Government to tax or ask for funds for this but 20 minutes into this disaster they are the first to be vilified.

The government was air dropping food and water yesterday. And zero dollars have gone to Ukraine-the aid funds family wage jobs at military manufacturing plants, and then the supplies are sent to Ukraine (widely reported even on conservative news stations for over a year now).

I lived 6 miles outside of town and it took me 5 hrs to be able to get home. Fortunately I had minimal damage but neighbors just down the road lost everything. For 5 days no phone no power for almost 8. Civil defense hauled water to us in the small town of Ida. 60 Minutes just aired a report showing that many insurance companies are doctoring the adjuster's damage reports to pay out a small fraction of what they should. Anyone with damage covered by insurance should make sure that the person who surveys the damage also sees the insurance company's offer and confirms whether it truthfully reflects the adjusters evaluation.

Yes the Biden Administration sent FEMA with supplies and to help people with house within an hour of Gov. Cooper declaring a state of emergency. However, since I-40 and other major roads (like route 26, parts of route 9) is totally out it is not clear how to get large trucks of supplies into some areas.

Something to be thankful of is that only 6% of Americans actually have flood insurance. Since flood insurance is a complete scam and a rip off, that means most people actually just set aside the money that they would’ve paid for flood insurance and keep it as a rainy day fund for situations like this. Everyone is going to be fine because they are ready and have been ready for just this kind of thing.

People have commented on other videos about the weather people has been broadcasting about this coming and everyone should have gotten out! Well everyone was told about 18 inches of rain, not 30 inches. And the ground was saturated from the last few days of rain. So this was a disaster in the making when more rain was coming...But you have so many small towns in so many different valleys that you really don't know how many people were affected until you hike in or fly a drone in to see all the destruction. So many people will not be found until probably years later when skeleton remains are discovered. Such a sad situation all across our mountain range...

We need a WPA. Instead of sending our money away to foreign countries we need to take care of our own infrastructure. It couldn't be more evident.

I apologize for being a realist but this will take years to rebuild if that’s possible. Mother Nature being herself.
