Was that a whistle from a flat plane crank in one of the F5000 having a stab but it could of been a Lola T 330?

This always comes up. No, there were no flat plane cranks in that field. The noise you heard was probably the straight cut gears in the transaxle. The only flat plane crank that I’m aware of that ever ran in Australian F5000 was a Repco Holden in John Goss’s Matich A53. He eventually swapped it back to a cross plane. He later experimented with a Ford and a flat plane crank but it came to nothing. I heard the flat plane A53 when Goss drove it at Sandown. I can’t remember what year it was but it sounded like a Formula 2 car.
