I love how adversity isn't a detriment to your enjoyment out there. Way to go! To preserve the feeling of wilderness for others, I always cut stumps down as low to the ground as possible, so the ground vegetation can easily cover it. And if I can I put a few cuts in top of the stump to help it rot faster and not look so much like a cut tree. In "wildlife trees" (dead trees that are topped to a safe level so they're no threat to people/structures, but left standing for bugs etc. to live in) the top is often cut like a spiky crown to give them the illusion of having been snapped instead of cut. I may not put that much effort in, but I do the lite version of that whenever I can. It is just a nice thing to do for whomever comes to that same spot next year, making it not look so "touched by human hands".

I once heard about an explorer that learned a skill from natives in the arctic. Wet the bottom of the sled and that helps with friction once it freezes. Not sure that would matter as much with a plastic sled.

Hi Noah, I am the guy who suggested putting snow on your coffee to sink the grains. In a freshly brewed cowboy coffee, one tablespoon of snow on top of a normal mug or travel glass would not cool it down much, believe me. And, if you really are a true coffee drinker, you would always prefer real coffee from the horrible, chemical instant stuff. Try it!. Anyway, great video as always. Thanks for sharing.
@jb1934
@jb1934 4 ай бұрын
and i was the guy who said forget the snow, just use a spoon. all it takes is a tap and the grounds will stay down. having said that, the real cost of real coffee is having to carry a big heavy insulated mug so the coffee can steep for 10 minutes without cooling off. so for trips when I'm not just base-camping and load is an issue, i myself will drink instant. A lot of smart people have worked on instant coffee over the years, there are options besides taster choice that are passably good.

not at all. he deliberately went out in a storm. not only was it forecast before he left, he also kept tabs on the weather by sat device to make sure it was developing as predicted. that was the whole point of the video! it's great to see a ton of snow out in the woods and all, but you can't have the storm chasing thing both ways...

This made me smile as I am sitting here watching this 1 day after another good few centimeters of snow fell overnight (around 30cm where I live in Nova Scotia). This time around a bit less disruptive than the one you are in from last week :) I was also pleased to read that Nova Scotia is designating 15 new provincial parks, and expanding 2 others.

Ugh...2 hours of shovelling that, after all that snowshoeing thru slush 🥱 Slushshoeing actually 😂 I like that idea of the loops on the sled for attaching the gear ropes! I have a similar sled from Canadian Tire, that I put holes along the side to hook bunjies on, but I think the loops would be better. I will have to steal that idea. Thanks Noah! 😊

It would be cool to plan this kind of trip in two stages. Initial scouting during autumn for locations to lay up a pile of cut firewood and put it hidden under cover for the return trip in mid-winter. Then having a cache really dried out wood would be a nice bonus and allow more time to explore and not sweat yourself chilly.

I use a shovel called the Garant Yukon Snow Sleigh for my big driveway, during the storm I strapped it to the back of my 4Runner everywhere I went. I got stuck turning around in a ditch and moved about 3 cubic metres of snow in the blink of an eye to access my undercarriage and dig that out. Same day I also rescued a guy who got stuck in his driveway using that shovel.

It's kind of funny, because when I read a news article about the snow storm on the east coast, and that the Cape Breton Highlands got over 100 cm of snow, I wondered what you might be doing. Now I know. They are forecasting another dump of snow in parts of the east coast in the next couple of days.

Ain't no dry wood out there, except in the middle of a tree! The wood stove always takes forever to heat when you light it the typical way. If you fill it with pine twigs and bows instead, it will heat up almost instantly. I'm so glad you got out in this storm, I was busy shoveling the most snow I've shoveled in my life and then breaking that record for 3 days running! Oh the joys of human power and country driveways. PS cooling coffee down like that is an affront to the gods and a tree will fall on your tent if you do it. Cowboy coffee with floating grounds in it is just not done cooking yet lol smh.

I have a similar silnylon tent from seek outside. Have had it in sustained 30+ mph winds with little cover and had it do well. Slept in it down to below 0F/-18C. At those temps It's only useful as a wind break after the fire goes out, so I always pack my warmest sleeping bag. I live in Maine and never use it in spring and summer due to bugs, though I can buy a dedicated nest for it that would make it usable. The small footprint and ease of setup and teardown make it great for late season canoe trips too when the nights can get cold and longer. It's more comfortable to relax in the warm, well-lit tent and requires less wood processing than an open fire for comfort and cooking.

That brings back memories. Every time there was a blizzard, my buddies and I, or sometimes just me, would jump in our cars and head off to the cottage and spend all day in the forest. Sometimes we’d camp out too. I’m super curious about the tent. I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while, but I’ve mostly only seen those awful, cheap Chinese ones. This one is a bit pricey, so I’d love to hear what you think of it. Especially if you’re going to use it a lot down the road.
