I want to give a big shout-out to all the volunteers who have kept this cabin (and other NS cabins) alive with all their hard work and dedication over the years. If it wasn't for them, these places would have rotted into the ground years ago. Thank you!!! 🙏

Do you think a reasonably healthy and fit 58 yr old male with virtually the same gear as you be able to successfully embark and succeed at this venture?

When you go to these cabins do you have any idea if someone is arriving at the same time or do you “reserve” it? How does that work?

@@nathanbailey1593 As stated from the Cofan cabin website "Due to the Tobeatic’s true wilderness nature and relatively low use, there is no requirement to book the cabin. If it’s empty, you’re in luck; if it’s occupied, you may still be in luck as travelers through the Tobeatic are often more than willing to share." I know that in the past episodes of some of the cabins that Noah has gone too, he has had to book and reserve them well in advance of his trips.

Me too. I can only go where my walker can take me & for short distances. We are blessed to go with him vicariously! My dad was such an outdoorsman, and I loved that way of life. Every time I see a river or lake I want to wet a line. I miss fresh rainbow trout for breakfast. 😋

Wow, now THAT is a small world J Gallant. I guess because I'm in Halifax, Nova Scotia, KZbin sends me video's from my area, but it's nice to see ones like this, the last few I got from KZbin is people turning on their dashcams, driving from Halifax to Yarmouth nonstop with no talking ... like watching grass grow.

We have huge tracts of Crown Land in Northern Ontario, some leased out by folks who hunt or fish in season. There you will find very rustic cabins that are used as shelters much like in Nova Scotia i.e.never locked, equipped with wooden bunk beds, a stove, table and a few cupboards and travelers are free to make use of them temporarily when trekking/canoeing. On a canoe trip with some mates, we portaged along a pathway between rivers and used one such shelter to eat our midday meal out of the rain. This one had a cupboard with a door that had not quite been closed. Leading from the cupboard was a trail of white powder that ran across the floor. Scattered through the trail from the cupboard we discovered a half dozen or so wee dead mice laying on their backs with what looked like puffy white mushrooms protruding from their stomachs. Turns out the last hunting party had left a box of instant just-add-water mashed potato mix and one corner of the box chewed away. The poor little mice looked kind of like hors d'oeurves that had fallen off of a platter. It was a bizarre sight!

Just a simple suggestion for you. When you're trying to split wood and it won't stay up right. Take a stick in your off hand and use that to hold the wood upright and stable. This will allow you to hit the wood with your axe hard enough to set the axe, but not endanger yourself. Commonly referred to as a "Sissy Stick", but I like to think of it as a "Safety Stick". Great video so far. Now if you will excuse me, I have to get back to it so I can finish watching.

Also, there may have been a reason but splitting on a rock isn’t great because if you miss or just go through the wood you hit the rock and dull the blade. Much better to just do on the ground no?

I could never make such a long trip. For one reason at 73 years of age, I'm not up to it anymore. However, even if I were, I would be stopping at every promising piece of water to fish, probably not going more than half a mile a day - lol. Loved your video, especially seeing the black bear and the black capped chickadee's at the cabin.

To get a canoe upstream when too shallow to paddle, a line on the front and another on the back and having the bow further from shore than the back and walking along even with the front of the canoe allows the canoe to slip along easily. Used this many times.

Your shelter was cool indeed. It was "portageurs's style". Two things here. When splitting the small logs (at the start of the video), use a small stick to hold the log. It makes things easier and safer. And the small cowbell..get rid of that. It was proven that those bells attarcts young bears. And who's following? Big Mama bear... (there's a video from NOLS talking about that). Other than that, it was a very nice video and you made me smile. Well done. I'm subscribing right now. P.S. The "animal" was a sleeping Sasquash.

I bet you got so many comments saying neoprene must be worn next to skin, the funny part is that's not even true. In air, neoprene next to skin is sweaty and can even get cold. When I was a bike courier in Edmonton I lived by my neoprene socks, always over merino socks! They even make merino lined wetsuits. I also have a neoprene hoodie which is the bomb in the rain under a shell because it traps the condensation and stays warm. Another fun fact, I've lived here for 1 year and seen 6 bears. Mostly while trail running or driving on trails.

I run into black bears maybe 5 times a year out in the back woods here in the maritimes. Never had a problem, I always have strobing lights on me, a loud noise or music maker, speaker. As long as there aren't cubs around, they're not cornered, and make sure they see you you're good. I'd sooner worry about sketchy moose, I keep a fair distance away from them!

Thanks Joe, I'm not too familiar with your neck of the woods. Check out your local crown land maps

For that shoulder issue you mention if the physio you've seen is not able to identify the problem area through their assessment see a different physio. When I was living in Nova Scotia ( I miss that place! ) I needed an MRI for an injury, I was able to get a private MRI and the results in under a week from 1st contact to the clinic. For your shoulder/neck they'll want to do a contrast die most likely to help with the imaging. Very well worth the $1200 to know exactly what is going on vs somebody thinking they have an idea. **edit to add that when I have MSK injuries I find seeing more than one therapist is always beneficial due to different approaches to treatment. My best and most uncomfortable sessions have always involved dry needling fun!!

For the leaky water bottle you could use a plastic bag in between the cap and spout to act as a temporary seal for transport.
