Just as a historical note, when you see a round referred to as 'Express' whether it be Black Powder Express or Nitro Express, that round is probably an expanding round, with a literal deep hole in the center of the nose of the round almost all the way through. This design was done to cause expansion of the round to dump as much energy as possible and damage as much flesh as possible to drop large game as quickly possible, which is helpful when you're staring down something the size of school bus. This also means they tend to have pretty short range compared to other rifles of the time.

Once I finally had a decent amount of cash going in RDO, I happened across the elephant rifle. I was... A little on the fence, so I decided to do some research. I had been a fan of this channel for a little bit already, and it turned out that this video had been released recently! After seeing just how incredibly dangerous this weapon was (to both target AND wielder....), I knew I had to have it. Between the one man who got spun completely around, the fact that it knocks you flat if you fire while crouched ingame, and the line "it kills on one end and maims on the other," I just HAD to have it. It's not a gun I use very much on account of the cost of ammunition and the fact that it ruins all but legendary pelts, but when I come upon a situation that calls for less of a gun and more of a handheld CANNON... This is my go-to. Thank you for this, I love this channel and everything you do, especially going back into so much detail about the historical aspects of these weapons! It's just amazing, and you've been a huge help for selecting specific outfits and loadouts in-game, which has been a blast... Sometimes literally!

@@ManvsHistory I just learned that during WWI, some british groups were issued 450 nitro express rifles for the purposes of penetrating armor that their normal rounds couldn't. I've posted dozens of times on the AdSense & KZbin community forums for help but have never had a single reply. Not one. I love the game, and enjoy making these videos, but this is just the start. I began this channel in April, and hoped to hit 1,000 subscribers by the end of the year. Still can't believe how fast that goal came and went. Now I may hit 10k by the end of October. Simply unbelievable. I can't say how grateful I am for the response I've gotten from you guys. I love seeing Elephant Guns and similiar weapons in games. It's just fun to walk around with 20 cartridges of instant-death in one's pocket, and I like the high risk, high reward nature of those weapons and their targets. And you're moving up as it seems like. It's rare enough for "professionals" to acknowledge KZbin as a legitimate way to educate others, let alone in combination with video games. I feel like getting send those scans could be an important step to getting send more and your channel being taken seriously in the future. Though I suppose your occupation helped quite a bit with that. And for the pricing of the gun and it's ammo: It's absolutely that the real-life version was so ridiculously priced that Rockstar didn't have to overprice it as much to make it fit in the about equally ridiculous RDR:O-economy. (650$ for a kettle. Jeez.)
@ManvsHistory4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, appreciate the support and kind words. I like doing these little historical bite-sized portions of history + gaming... but grounding them in legitimate scholarship. Also gives folks a good glimpse into how historians do what we do. I think people often just assume that we either simply 'just know' this stuff, or we read about it in a book. In reality however, we often have to go back to the primary sources and start from scratch. Lots of detective work, which is pretty cool.

There are actually cases where elephant guns have been utilized in anger against personnel and materiel targets during wartime, believe it or not. During World War 1, British troops were consistently harassed by German snipers under the cover of thick steel plates known as "loopholes". Their service rifles were incapable of penetrating the steel, so the British government hastily acquired a number of elephant guns from their African colonies and issued them amongst their troops on the front lines. The idea is that they would wait for the sniper to get in position behind the loophole to take the shot and fire, allowing the far heavier and more powerful projectile to punch through the loophole and incapacitate him (or simply wound him with spalling/fragmentation or concussion if it didn't get through). Notably, the official British Army request was for .470 Nitro Express hardened solid ammunition. By all accounts, they performed admirably in the role. Additionally, also from World War 1, the fielding of tanks prompted the Germans to develop the first anti-tank rifle: the 13.2mm Mauser 1918 T-Gewehr, which took heavy inspiration from the big-bore safari rifles of the day. Decades later in the early part of World War 2, there was an Italian commander by the name of Duke of Aosta -- a somewhat peculiar character for the time. He led Italian forces stationed in East Africa and was known for being an aficionado/collector of custom firearms. Due to a shortage of dedicated anti-tank cannons, he graciously handed out a number of elephant rifles from his personal armory to the troops under his command in hopes of countering Allied armored cars.

A 40-70 round is really large. My friend had a break action handgun that fired a 45-70 and it was crazy. They are absolutely massive rounds. I can see why it would be called an "elephant rifle". I think the Springfield trapdoor rifle fired the same though, represented by the Springfield rifle in game, one of my favorites.
@ManvsHistory2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chidy! First off, I can't picture a handgun that fires 45-70. That's nuts. I mean awesome, but nuts. I'll take your word that they exist (not doubting it), but good lord that thing would hurt your wrist. As for the elephant gun, it fired the .450 Nitro Express which is a different, much larger round than even the 45-70. And I should note, some elephant guns fired even larger rounds- I have a .470 NE round in my office and it's hilariously large. If somebody else comes across this, please chime in and correct me if I'm wrong here- but I've handled a .450 NE round and lots of 45-70, and I believe the .450 is noticeably longer. See: i108.photobucket.com/albums/n5/TARJARBAR/002-6.jpg

Now...in another note, that coroner's report, that, is one nasty gunshot. A size of a cheese plate? And it even did damage to the brick wall too.
@ManvsHistory4 жыл бұрын
A different newspaper article said 'dinner plate'. Either way... he's not walking it off.

You know the in game economy is all over the place when you hear that a gun is 70% more than it should cost and think wow they nailed it with that one

Would you be able to do a video on some historically accurate guns that could be added into red dead online?

I’m surprised you were able to stay in the game long enough to get footage...

@AleN972 I’ll be the judge of that. I’ll be on in like an hour. Yesterday I wasn’t getting disconnected. My game was literally crashing every 5min lol

I let out an audible OOOOOOF when you told about that guy who shot a double loaded Elephant Gun... Jesus that must've hurt... Also, can you make a video about supressor use? I'm pretty sure they were invented back then, were they used at all? Would it be historically accurate (LOL, as if R* cared about that) to use a suppressed Nagant Revolver? Thats my dream gun for RDO.
@mandalorian_guy4 жыл бұрын
"Suppressors" as we know them today (Baffled tubes with subsonic ammunition) only became a realistic item during WW2 and even then they were specialized pieces and mostly just dampened the supersonic crack. Sound absorbing barrels did exist before that but were ineffective and mostly to redirect the sound away from the user so they didn't get tenitis. These are what Hiram Maxim was selling during WW1 and were basically not useful at actually quieting the sound.
@Dave-ti1wv4 жыл бұрын
I heard the Nagant is one of the few revolvers that can be suppressed due to it having a sealed cylinder. Is that correct or have I got my wires crossed? (I would love to see Colt dragoon added BTW).
@gonnegottkehaskamp16674 жыл бұрын
@@Dave-ti1wv Yeah, the Nagant uses a special seal (essentially the cylinder is pressed tightly onto the barrel which makes the gun gas sealed) that allows it to be suppressed. I think its one of the only revolvers that does that. I would love a supressed revolver in RDO as an alternative to the bow. They could make it ridiculously expensive, make it use special ammo or just make it so weak that you HAVE to make headshots. If they even care at all about balancing.
@ManvsHistory4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, Egomania. Yeah, can't imagine the force of that recoil. Seriously, it must have been equivalent to being kicked by a mule. Or clydesdale. I'll look into the suppressor.

Personally love to use this gun to make executions with NPC enemies. Real satisfying when the head just pops like a watermelon. Too bad it ruins every pelt though but its understandable if some dude gets cheeseplate-sized hole in his chest
@docwil25414 жыл бұрын
You don't think the weapon is the .577? Going after legendary hunts it would make sense. You may want to clarify the difference between an elephant/big game gun like the .470 or .577 and a 4 bore stopping rifle which tossed 1/4 lb lead round down range. I really enjoy your series, keep up the good work. As a side note a Mauser 98 would be a very welcome change over the Krag or Carcano.
@ManvsHistory4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Doc, glad you're enjoying the content! As for the caliber, it's hard to lock it down. Heck, I may even be off on the manufacturer, but I think if you take all the evidence together, it seems like Rigby & Co would be the best fit, particularly with their Mauser connection, role in developing the .450 NE round, and RDO being set in 1898. Also, many other elephant guns and larger caliber NE double rifles came after 1898, particularly in the early 1900s. Of course, it's also possible that we're over thinking all this... here we are pouring through company records from the late 1800s and the truth of the matter is that some guy at R* may have just thought it would be cool to make a generic elephant gun with nitro express rounds.

Bruh this gun is great for combat with paint it black never crouch though you miss most of the time and you get flung backwards. It’s under rated and I hope it stays that way. It’s literally one shot. And I tested the range for dead eye with it standing in front of the stables in valentine and had a friend stand near the bounty board
@ManvsHistory4 жыл бұрын
I love this gun. Even though it ruins the pelts, I enjoy hunting with it. Feels like a Hawken .50, minus the cloud of gun smoke.
@RebelSandGaming4 жыл бұрын
The main reason they switched from 450 to 470 was cause they didnt want the local insurgents to be able to take the 450 shells and make ammo for the martini henrys and such cause their ammo both used the same amount of powder

Fascinating point of view on how a video game developer's mashup of a gun made famous by Ernest Hemingway isn't actually too far from the truth, and I love the idea of a weapon that bites back. Your analysis of how Red Dead Online jives with the historical record does a great job of motivating us to learn more of the history of the American West. Beyond Stephen Ambrose, what authors would you recommend?
@ManvsHistory4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Bob! I'd recommend David McCullough (Johnstown Flood, Mornings on Horseback, The Pioneers), Nathaniel Philbrick (In the Heart of the Sea, Last Stand, Mayflower), and Candace Millard (Destiny of the Republic, River of Doubt, Hero of the Empire). All three authors are brilliant, but the latter two are my favorites. Start with Philbrick's Heart of the Sea or Last Stand, then Millard's Destiny of the Republic.
