"Braids aren't just for women." I'm so grateful you said that. I work in an equestrian centre and children who come on field trip are often pretty shocked when they see braids on stallions and geldings because, I'm quoting, "Braids are for girls". So I need to explain them that men wore braids (and still do) in many countries for practical reasons and aesthetics. Not to mention long hair is an attribute of power in numerous cultures. But I'm still quite disappointed to observe so many people are still believing that.

As an argentinian i can confirm that people still to this day do the first braid style in Chile and in here. It's pretty common to see the hairstyle amongside descendents of natives and it's also common a single braid done lower on the back. Just in case anyone was wondering.

Inu The Changa I Think it is pretty universal. The particular style is not that common here in Scandinavia, but You do see it every now and Then (mainly on children and people trying to look like milk maids) but the english braiding technice (or simple braiding technice) is one of the very first thing children from many modern cultures learn to do when it comes to hairstyle.

@@katrinepetersen2566 I'm half mapuche and I can tell you, yes it is pretty universal, but in the native South American culture braids are particularly strong, you won't see any hairstyle other than two braids, one down the back, a ponytail or just straight up loose, that's it nothing else not even a bun (I'm talking day to day bases)

+Rosie Brown When it comes to historical hairstyles yes, they do. I was talking more on a day to day basis on the native culture now, as far as I know (and I'm only familiar with the South Andean part) they don't use buns just for practical purposes, usually their hair is way too thick and long for them to do buns. This doesn't mean they couldn't wear them thought. Don't take this as an expert speaking, I'm just passing on what I've learnt from my grandma and watching kinda from the outside.

I am loving your historical hair tutorials and personally I really like the hairstyles based on mummies. Artists don't always realistically portray their subjects' hair, and you run the risk of a hairstyle in artwork being unachievable in real life. Mummy hair on the other hand is constrained by the rules of physics.

Braids have always played an important part of any Venezuelan girl XD the mixture of native braids and African braid hair stiles are very common specially at the beach. When i was 10 you could see rows and rows of girls getting their hair braided. This is so nice, love your vids. My greatgrandma was from the Wayu tribe and his husband was a black man, my grandma said he was the son of a slave that fought against the Spanish settlers that stayed after the Country independence alongside the wayuu people and that's how he fell in love the my great grandma. Then my grandma fell in love with a Spanish man and she run away from home with him at 17 XD so I guess i have african blood, wayuu blood and spanish blood? all i know is that my wayuu part of the family and the black part of my family loved braids

This video was originally longer with a few more that eventually got cut for time's sake, but the ones I cut were especially unsettling to me because they're so well preserved, that they just look like they fell asleep. That undercuts the psychological distance you kinda need in order to deal with dead bodies. Look up the Children of Llullaillaco.

@@silvousplaits I don't find mummies unsettling at all. The people are dead whether we have their bodies to study or not. We've learned so much about ancient cultures because we have mummies to study - in a way it gives us an opportunity not only to learn about their cultures but appreciate them as well. Think how many cultures have been lost to the ages because they left nothing behind! Being able to study mummies, especially with the newer techniques that allow scientists to take DNA and use hair samples to discover what they are, etc. helps us learn so much more about a culture than we would otherwise know. And isn't that what a lot of these cultures wanted, what a lot of people want - to be remembered? The children you're talking about, for instance, they were killed whether we like it or not, whether we ignore them or not, even if their bodies had decayed over time and not mummified, they still would have been killed. By studying them, we can learn more about their lives, their society and even respect and feel sad about the way they were treated at the end of their lives. I don't think it would have been unsettling to show the Maiden and how her hair was braided - it would have been honoring her, remembering her. We aren't stamping our approval on what her people did to her when we remember her - of course we think it was terrible. But nothing we do now can change what they did, so why not remember her?

I don't often comment on KZbin videos, but I have worked with Chiribaya and Chinchorro mummies/human remains. One other surprising hairstyle I also have seen is "microbraids" all over the head, which are then sometimes braided or gathered into even more elaborate hairstyles. I loved this video, and as an bioarchaeologist, think this is a much under-studied area of prehistory! Thank you for sharing your talent/research!

Most of them (men and women) had completely shaved heads, exept sometimes, for a small patch that was tied into a ponytail. This was to prevent head lice. That is why wigs (with the familiar long-bob hairstyle) were common.

I love these ancient hairstyle. Its really inspiring and interesting to see how different cultures braided there hair so long ago and, that we actually still use the same braiding techniques. Just showed my husband the 6 braids one and he loves it! My hair is curly and just an ince or so from the top of my bum.Thanks to your channel I can have my hair up and nice in ways other then what I'm used to doing.Makes for a nice change of pace.

I don't like looking at the mummies, but I do find the history surrounding them fascinating. I also love that these styles are mostly based around three strand braids. I have trouble manipulating the other braid styles without losing the style into a random tangle.... Thank you for sharing your research and tutorials.

we had to do our presentation on maya in history class today and after that learned a bit more about the invasion of the inka and aztec folks by spanish explorers. coincidence that it was on the day you upload this video with an incan hairstyle? who knows :)

i'm Bolivian so seeing the first Chinchorro Braiding Style reminded me of the many Cholitas from the Aymara and Quechua cultures that wear this type of braid till today. My Childhood maid that basically taught me personal hygiene and stuff also showed me how to braid this and wash our long hair with lemon and cold mountain water. Truly interesting video and i loved your reserach references✨💯
