I restored a set of Stanley Transitional Planes (Beech sole) so far as cleaning them up, flattening the sole (so much easier on a transitional plane!) and sharpening the blades. The old No. 26 Type 10 (1892-1899) is now my daily driver plane, and I often use it to trim doors for client work!

Really beautiful work, James! 😃 Another tip about the vinegar... For bigger pieces you can prepare a paste of vinegar and wheat flour in the stove. This way you can apply over the piece with a brush and leave during the night. 😊 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

I only have one bedrock, a type 3 607. I bought this because I really needed a jointer and it was cheap at an antique tool show.. I bought a new blade, but didn't restore it. I used it on a project 5 yrs ago, and haven't touched it since until this morning. I finally took it apart to see all the casting marks etc and deemed it a type 3. I'm glad I saw your video. I'll let the next generation restore it.

What I suggest is to buy a simple block plane(i.e. 110 or 220 style) or a cheaper manufacturer bench plane that would cost you a mere couple bucks. You can learn on one like that so you're not "destroying" the value of an actual collectable plane if you were to make a major mistake in the process. On the flip side, if it's a success, you could maybe even increase that tools value and sell it for a small profit. You just never know until you try.🤷 Plane Collector's channel is another awesome resource for learning what should/could be done for a restoration. Good luck! Oh, and here's a disclaimer: Once you restore one, you'll probably never want to stop there. 😉

I don't understand the frog adjustment on my bedrock 604. I know how to move it forward and back.. but since the bed it mates to is at and angle the further forward the frog goes the more the cutting iron projects out the bottom of the plane. I then have to back the blade adjustment so I'm not cutting too deep. But then the gap for the chip is back to where I started. It never gets tighter. What am I missing?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 жыл бұрын
As you move the frog forward the gap should get smaller even though it's on an angle. Yes you do have to back up the iron some but that doesn't change that. It moved forward as well. I think I'm not understanding the problem. The physics work exactly the same way on a standard frog as a bedrock frog.

I was Sanding the varnish off my tote handle and Noticed a number three in white on the right side of the handle and one else found these or know what they are for? my plane is suppose to be a Stanley Bedrock number 605 with Corrugated Soul so its not the size unless it was taken from another plane.

Very timely video. Bought a 605 yesterday and it needs some work before using. Biggest concern is the tote broken in half. Seems impossible to use without at least gluing the tote back together. Not sure of the best glue for that purpose either. Looks like a pretty clean break. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 жыл бұрын
I would use hide glue. It's much easier to clean off the outside with any squeeze out without hurting the finish. You could actually clean it off with a wet rag and some scrubbing.

Hi, I want a jointer plane, Stanley No7’s used in good condition go for from 100 to 200 dollars in my area. A brand new Stanley No 7 is 106.00 on Amazon. Are the used ones that much better that I would pay the same or more and still have to restore the plane? Or would I be better off buying new for $106.00? This plane would be a user, don’t care about collectors value. Thanks!
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 жыл бұрын
The older ones are better in fit and finish, and they will hold their settings better. Depending on where you are at you can get an antique that needs a bit of work for $40-80. That would be my suggestion. But the new ones will work. Just understand getting them up and going is much like restoring an old one.

This is a Stanley bedrock. They are far more collectible than the average Stanley. So a normal number five like this in this kind of condition is around 20 to $30 to ping pong where you get it. Stanley bedrock and this condition is around $100 to $200.

I inherited a bedrock 606, a Stanley Bailey #4 type 11 and a rough #5 type 17. The 606 and the #4 are usable but need cleaning. The 5 is missing the yoke and is rusty. I’m trying to decide if I should get an original yoke or one of the new impro😢Reed yokes from your website. I intend for all 3 to be users

I got 5 planes in a lot from E-Bay and their condition matched -- pretty much -- what you ended with BUT they had parts that were NOT necessarily the right ones for each of the planes. They seem to be a mix match of parts but not original. Now I am kind of at a loss to be sure which and where to find the "correct" parts for the bodies I have. I suppose the question is - where can I get a simplified statement of what size blade/bed/chip breaker/mouth combos they should be to be "normal"? It seems like the blade is too narrow - or the adjustment fit is poor or the slot is too short ...that kind of problems. Much about the planes are good but ...
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 жыл бұрын
that is a huge ball of wax and it depends on the plane and the type of that plane. usually I call up a collector of that type to see what is on their plane. but if you ask the hand plane collecting groups they would be glad to help with that.

After watching this video though it's put me in the mood to resurrect another tool lol. I think there might be something wrong with me lol...

I was going back and forth in the title of this one. And I decided to call it restoration as that is what people in the business tend to call it even if you're not restoring it to original condition you are restoring it to current patina. also I wanted to show the difference between doing something for personal benefit and use and doing something for collectibility and resale. I have well over 100 other videos showing how to restore a hand plane for functionality and making it look as good as new. But I haven't done one like this before.

To restore is to return to original state. The word is as misused as the tools.

@@WoodByWright No doubt. I'm a visual artist, and there are similar conversations about paintings and other artworks. I say conservation because you have preserved a usable tool for the future, without significantly altering its original condition.
