There's a novel by Tracey Chevalier about the creation of the series of tapestries that the unicorn is from! There's barely any confirmed historical information about the tapestries (it's like, the name of the family that owned them, and around when they were made based on clues from the art style and the way the tapestries were made, is about all the info there is). But the novel is good, especially if you want to learn about how to make medieval tapestries!

I recall hearing that the Unicorn Captive is a marriage symbol: A young woman bound by matrimony to the tree of fertility. It was likely a wedding gift for a noble marriage.
@thatdeathanglelordwithinte79622 жыл бұрын

@mcchuggernaut93782 жыл бұрын
@@thatdeathanglelordwithinte7962 I don't know if it had exactly THAT connotation...more like how we jokingly call marriage the "ball and chain", or that you are "bound together". They didn't exactly think of it in the modern way we would. Marriage was "captivity to each-other". This was symbolism, not intended as a statement of one-sided ownership. Remember that divorce was also a very rare and frowned-upon thing at that time. People then took marriage more seriously as a nearly always for-life event. Most people also married as virgins, hence the purity symbolism of a woman before her marriage. We don't know the circumstance, she could have been very happy about being tied to this particular man in marriage. And at this point we never will, since all that information has been lost.

These are my favorite types of videos, that Diane makes....love the sound of the paint brush strokes on the tapestry's....and the running of her hands over the fabric(it sounds like the ocean)....very soothing and comforting....along with the history lesson and background of these beautiful works of art....complete with her french accent....who needs to go France???....

I think the last bird in the first tapestry looks like a bird of paradise - there are many types with beautiful colours and plumage. I could be wrong, but that's what it looked like to me. Loved this video!.

Yes. Probably it's a Paradisea apoda (BTW, why 'apoda', that means 'without foots, it's a very intriguing matter, worth of a Diane's short).

The captive unicorn is part of a series I believe, which is also the background of the Gryffindor common room in the Harry Potter Movies. My grandmother had an embroidery pattern of one of the scenes and it was her life’s work. Every time I see one of those scenes I just think of her even though she passed a long while ago. Thanks for showing it :)

Although less refined than the other two, I find that a tapestry whose name derives from a detail barely visible (and in ruins), is very stimulating. It could be a mannerist interpretation of the theme of the "castle among the trees", rather widespread. Perhaps with a reference to the baroque vision of "Tempus omnia vorat"
