I'm inclined to believe the 1960's story, in 1912 Boxhall had his whole life ahead of him and the perception of him abandoning people to die even though saving them could have killed everyone in the lifeboat could have terrible consequence for him. In the 60's he was nearing the end of his life and wouldn't have cared.

Captain ordering; " Get your lifeboat back to the ship! Do whatever the hell you can to row that teeny tiny lifeboat all the way to the stern Yes from there all the way to the stern ( of a ship that was the biggest and largest in 1912 ) , go around the stern, to the starboard side, and attempt to RUSH the lifeboat to an open door in the hull that you MAY or MAY NOT be able to reach. DO IT QUICKLY ! The sinking is accelerating ! " Gosh I can imagine the stress and fear of the officers in the lifeboats.

Maybe this mirage effect played a role too, concerning the distance to the "mystery ship", and so it seemed nearer on the false horizon than it was.

@@silverline4131 I spoke deliberately of the "mystery ship", but not of the Californian as the vid you linked because the description of the eyewitnesses do not match the Californian, not in direction of sight, not in position, not in crew behavior... which cannot be explained just by a mirage effect. There is a very good book by Thomas Williams "Titanic and the Californian" which sheds light on these mismatches.

It's interesting about the cold air mirage effect, that we only figured this out over 100 years later. The documentary that figured it out went through ships logs in the area the night of the disaster. Many of which mentioned refraction happening. They knew that the horizon couldn't be trusted. Historians and buffs alike didn't figure it out for so long. Fascinating really. Fun fact about the false horizon, it will lift lit things as well, stretching flat land to look like cliffs, and low tankers to look super tall like a cargo ship. So, makes sense it put the flare a few degrees above the horizon.

The theory in the movie is not correct... Watch a video called James Cameron - The final word... He teams up with a whole Buchanan of forensic experts that investigate the sinking as they would an airline crash... And they came up with a slightly different break up theory that actually makes sense when paired up with eye witness testimony given from survivors... He said it's different than the movie, but there's no real point to change it and it would be very costly....lol

Lifeboat #2 was one of the two "Emergency" Boats the ship had. They were smaller than the other wooden boats (they could hold forty people versus sixty-five) and were kept permanently uncovered and swung out. (They were, as as the term implies, kept that way for a sudden emergency such as someone overboard.) Boxhall had the ship's latitude more or less correct. The longitude (which had to be determined by a rather complex formula involving calculations of the ship's time versus GMT) was where he was off by about 12 miles. However, it was close enough to bring rescue ships to the vicinity. I tend to believe his 1912 version about the gangway doors. The incident would've still been fresh in his mind then. By the 1960's, some fifty years would have passed since the sinking. His memory likely wasn't as sharp and his recollections may have been altered by reading of other accounts.

So, I've got a question that may or may not be relevant to what you discuss here, and its a question related to something I just learned about yesterday. Scientist claim that during January of 1912 the full moon was closer to Earth at one point, and the result from that was some powerful waves that knocked into icy landscapes near Canada, and they believe that the resulting impacts created the ice field that the Titanic sailed through. Is that at all accurate?
