Thanks for the video. In the USA when prohibition failed, it makes sense that people would move away from temperance. What's confusing to me is how people forgot about temperance in the Commonwealth, where they never had prohibition. Supposedly there were coffee palaces with hundreds of rooms, and temperance bars in many cities. Then somehow it was forgotten

This is an educational video. It is eye opening at how it was supposed Christian's (mostly women) who were against drinking alcohol. While for the first 1800 years of Christianity they considered alcohol a gift from God to make mankind's life more joyful as the Bible teaches. It is even more interesting (if a person looks into it) how that the temperance movement is what caused the pharmacists to start developing soft drinks laced with cocaine etc. to replace healthy alcohol. The inventor of Coca-cola had been badly wounded in the civil war and needed something to help him with pain and help calm his nerves. He had used morphine and then alcohol, but when alcohol was banned, he needed to invent a drug concoction using cocaine thus (Coca-cola). Everyone just changed which bar they went to. They left the saloon bar for the Drug store bar. But they served the drug concotions to children too. And we wonder why everyone is addicted to soft drinks. And now look at all the health problems caused by soft drinks. My in laws are Catholic. The men drink rum regularly, while the women fall for and drink soft drinks regularly. My sister in law has high blood pressure, and gray hair, etc. Although her husband don't have gray hair, or not nearly as much nor high blood pressure. My sister in law asked my wife, "Why do I have so many health problems and my husband don't even though he is older." She went on to say "we both eat the same food, do the same work, and go everywhere together." My wife corrected her. My wife said "That is not correct, you drink soft drinks while your husband drinks rum."

What sort of health benefits are we talking about from Alcohol? Versus not drinking any at all, no soft drinks either.
@servantofyahuwah24862 жыл бұрын
@@stickeyyyy we all know that alcohol kills germs, and helps fight infection. This is why people put alcohol on cuts. It does the same inside the body. Alcohol, especially wine improves liver function. And religiously , no one can truly believe in the Bible and be against drinking alcohol.
@danielstoker26682 жыл бұрын
@@servantofyahuwah2486 This is simply not true. Alcohol impairs immune function making it more difficult for our bodies to fight off infection. Any benefit you experience from drinking while sick is the result of its anaesthetising effects. And alcohol, including wine, causes liver cirrhosis and cancer (as well as other cancers, like esophageal and stomach).

Lips that touch liquor shall not touch ours. Just look at them holding that sign up, no wonder their husbands drank! Good Lord, I wouldve drank, smoked crack & take horse tranquilizers if I was in their husbands shoes & had to come home to that! I can only imagine the blistering nagging those guys dealt with! Guys probably got chased around the house with a rolling pin. Poor guys most likely took their own lives not having alcohol. Spine chilling & horrifying! I'm gonna have a few drinks now actually just for seeing that picture of those disasters!

In the beginning, it was men who started the temperance movement (a call to moderate one consumption of alcohol - to cut down on one self in the amount of alcohol he or she consumed). In the post 1864 era, it was the women who lead the charge - the most famous was hatchet Granny (Carrie Nation). Was the temperance movement a bad idea, I don't think so. But was the 18th amendment the solution, the answer was no - that led to even other problems, which brought about the 21st amendment. There will be always unforeseen circumstances of more problems created by government enforced morality ....

Dunno. We had a similar movement in Lithuania with Catholic Bishop Motiejus Valančius as the main figure (he's remembered with respect mostly, especially by the generations that grew up at villages and farms), he did not want complete destruction of alcohol, but wanted to help people drink moderately. Other countries had a period like this too, I wouldn't say it was bad. People drank too much, the farmers ability to produce suffered, while the rich just cared to make alcohol from leftovers, sell it, profit, the effects of uncontrollable consumption are never good, something had to be done. By seeing many alcoholics, one can't help but hate the substance. No dignity, falling, vomiting on themselves, even dying in their vomit, becoming violent, verbally abusive, dangerous to themselves and others, all organs failing, some considering suicide, because it leads to depression.
