As a former figure skater and a nationally competitive athlete who is now a family doctor and had my own mental health struggles, my heart goes out to Debbie. To become a well respected orthopedic surgeon is no joke but the stress of being a doctor can be debilitating, especially in the surgical specialties. I've had a random woman file a sexual/inappropriate touching complaint against me with the medical board (I'm a gay man) for what was an entirely appropriate exam and it was a tsunami of stress and shock. I'm glad I got through it but I have no judgement only compassion for Debi in whatever she's been through.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Something similar happened to my brother-in-law and nearly destroyed his career and reputation. He was suspended by the medical board and now has his license back. It's a shame.

Sad to hear about Debbie Thomas and I pray that she get’s treated for her Bi-Polar disorder. I lost my son who suffered from BP and decided that he wanted to treat his mental illness with alcohol. Attended an drinking party while away at college, took his meds and never woke up. However, my daughter who is also Bi-Polar, suffered with the disorder for 2 years before deciding to turn her life around. She too wanted to treat her disorder with alcohol and drugs and through the grace of God, she decided to turn her life around. She started taking her meds, became a Zumba instructor, graduated from college and leads a very productive life. Get some professional help Debbie and you too can turn your life around.

Debi might want to start looking closely at her choice in Men to start. Clearly a major distraction on top of her mental health issues. I guess the red flag was when she admitted to hitting her fiancé. Thats not being "accountable", for women in abusive situations thats a backhanded form of "denial". Wish her much luck going forward.

Debbie Thomas graduated from Stanford University, became a Medical Doctor and she was an Olympic Medalist in "1988". Had she married a strong, Highly successful, Talented black man, it would have been a whole different story because she would be living Big!!!! Debbie Thomas would be DEBBIE THOMAS!

Where is the figure skating community? Why aren't they helping this great Olympic skater? This tells you all you need to know about the phony racist skating world. Debbie Thomas did a lot for the USFSA. If people would just stop kicking her, judging her and condemning her she could figure out her situation. She needs HELP and COMPASSION. Shame on Iyanla for not trying to help but rather slamming her. The first step in sincerely helping someone requires a healthy dose of empathy or sympathy. Hopefully this woman can get some help. The judges in the divorce courts were too harsh making her pay alimony to a spouse who made more money than she. She had to pay child support for a child of which she has no custody and isn't allowed to see. Her ex husband was a gold digger. Debbie Thomas was bankrupted after it was all over. All of it came crashing down and she even skated in some shows to pay the debts. But she had a break down and couldn't cope. Her so called friends in the medical community aren't helping at all. This goes to show medicine is all about money. This woman is extremely brilliant and gifted. I pray she receives the help she needs. Her children shouldn't be scorning her. Shameful. I will pray The Lord God will lift her burdens and heal this troubled woman.

C no evil. Debi is a self-loathing fool. Yes, she has mental issues, but she also has an issue with being black. She’s always surrounded herself with white people. The fact that she is twice divorced from two white men and is not engaged to white trailer-park trash speaks to that. The fact she even moved down to Appalachia in the first place is also curious Who lives down there? Mostly poor white people. She had absolutely no connection to that area but still decided to open us private practice there should be illuminating. What could she possibly have in common with that uneducated white man? Nothing!!! In her mind, as long as it’s white-and not black-she’ll sleep with it. This is disgraceful notwithstanding her mental issues.

Mental illness doesn't care about age, race, religion, or economic group. The sad thing is that society somehow finds it more acceptable to have drinks with friends rather than a session with a psychologist. Accepting the fact that you have a mental illness and sticking with the treatment somehow makes you "weak" in the eyes of many people. You can give someone all the compassion you want, but the fact is they have to recognize their illness and be willing to stick with the treatment. There is no cure, just effective treatment.

So sad to watch this. I was a teenager at that time and my Parents and other's felt she was not focusing enough on her skills at that critical moment. I believe Debbie Allen the choreographer was brought on board to assist her with dance moves because a lot was riding on her performances, she stood to not only make millions in endorsements, but make history. But she was dating at that time and also became engaged if my memory serve me correct, that's why many felt she was not 100% focused on her skilled. I am sure she regret those moments and time in her life, at least she would have been financially secured, made history and continued her aspiration of becoming a doctor without financial wows.....So heart breaking to watch this.

Poor Debi. She could have won gold, but Witt got in her head - her specialty, and she couldn't even hold on to Silver. The battle between she and Witt is what glued me to figure skating! I wish her the best, but maybe she didn't seem that stable in 88? Mental problems rarely get better with age, disappointment, and poverty.

I feel the same way to. After Witt played her psychological mind games on her and won the gold she has hasn't been the same since. It was as if she was a Lion and Katerina shaved her mane. It stuns me but doesn't surprise me bc she lost that uumph! Or confidence that competitive ppl have when Witt won.

If you guys think this is because of Katerina Witt you don't know much of the story. Her coach Alex McGowan said that Debi was not very focused before the Olympic Games and too involved with her boyfriend as a distraction. Plus, from the interviews she gave - especially at the '88 World Championships after the Olympics - it sounded like she didn't love skating much by the time her amateur career ended. Katerina just happened to be the one with the mental strength to stay focused.

Why can't she raise her boyfriend's sons? Nothing wrong with that. She loves him . Her ex- husbands probably took all her money. Disgusting. Debi is an amazingly talented , and intelligent woman. She just needs to brush herself off and put her medical or engineering knowledge to good work. What an amazing career.

what exactly is the problem? mental illness, bad relationships, bad management skills in medicine? lack of endorsements? Ill equipped for life? Seems like this young lady was given so much but some parts don't add up...

+Ninjacatprincess - Mental illness is THE reason she is in this situation. Mental illness does not care whether someone was a champion skater or surgeon. If you develop serious bipolar disorder like Debi, you would go down to. All the talk in the world could not change that.

At the time she quit skating to go to med school, ice skating had great professional opportunities for elite skaters that she could have totally cashed in on. It's too bad she didn't do that for several years and then if she still wanted to go to med school she could have done it being already set for life financially.

Edmund Geswein - Debi did compete as pro (for money) while at Stanford and after her amateur career. After she graduated from Stanford she took some time off to continue skating professionally before enrolling in medical school at Northwestern. She even did a few professional competitions while in medical school. So, she was making money. She had an expensive divorce from her second husband (an attorney), including having to pay child support for the son they had together. She made the crazy decision to open up a private practice in rural Virginia. She exhausted all of her savings keeping that practice afloat. She met the loser she’s with now in that small town.

A documentary decades ago actually predicted Debi would have financial struggles by gambling a stable career in skating for a risky one in orthopedic surgery. She would have been better off pursuing a less demanding type of medicine (i.e. Sports or Podiatry) while keeping a presence in skating. Timothy Goebel, Paul Wylie, Evan Lysacek and Michelle Kwan all got non-skating jobs, but maintained streams of income through skating via endorsements, broadcasting, coaching, clinics etc...

@@MrOu83 Debi has a history of poor money decisions. She only skated professionally for 3 years after the Olympics and the bulk of that money went towards medical school, which ultimately ended up being a waste. A lot of skaters get burned out from skating, but they still have to pay bills. Debi needed to take skating more seriously, at least as a side gig.
@MrOu83
@MrOu83 3 жыл бұрын
@@reneerobinson3559 - How do you know where Debi’s money went? Do you have receipts, videos, etc., that document precisely where her money went. Why should she have taken pro skating more seriously? Her primary focus after her amateur career was to become a doctor, and that’s what she did. Pro skating for her was just a gig, unlike some of the other skaters.
