My list: Driver:SF Driver Driv3r Driver 2 Driver:PL You might ask why DSF it's on top? What I loved about this game is the driving physics, soft suspensions like a real American car, and of course, the action movie car chases theme (the main reason why Driver 1 or this series exist). And DSF bring all of that back. And I seem to only one here to appreciate that. This game also made me love American cars or cars in general.

Knowledgeable about cars as I am, I have long since realized that the majority of the cars in their respective game behave similar to certain drive types. In Driver SF, most of them behave like rear-wheel drives which was a conscious decision on the behalf of Reflections. One thing they wanted to recapture was the spirit of Driver 1 which itself took a lot of influence from car chase films of the 70s, a time when most of the cars used were RWD, hence the handling model.
@markwiering4 жыл бұрын
The driving in Driver San Fancisco often frustrates me. When I take a turn while chasing a criminal, the rear wheels of the car sometimes start slipping while the front wheels keep their grip, after which the car turns 180 degrees. I must turn around (which takes a long time) and in the mean time, the criminal escapes. I hate it.

Nice video. I don't understand, really, how can one love Parrallel Lines so much. It was good, but aiming and shooting was horrible, traffic was insane, you could hardly drive through those endless cars and not beat them, the way main character moves makes me feel pain. Cars where unnamed and pretty much alike, and pretty routine gameplay was also boring. Driver 1 was EPIC, it's so hardcore, the first mission in garage will make today's gamers cry) Driver 2 was amazing, the first time I left the car for a free walk was like "What??)" Graphics became better and I remember some cool missions and the dynamics of the game - soo good and fast. I now play San Franciso and it's a great game, it reminds me of the games back in the days when the whole industry was about making GAMES not money first of all!

I remember first seeing Driver on psone. The detail for the time was amazing, cars felt heavy like the 70's driving in rain soaked roads in LA with lights reflecting off the surface. Loved Rio on Driver 2. Driver 3 buggy, unfinished yet fun with the detailed cities and car physics. Driver PL was a nice tidy game with great ideas. But I really did enjoy Driver SF, they went back to what Driver was originally all about, car chases, crashes and handbrake turns; ditching gta influences.

Why so many people are hating on Driver SF boggles my mind, it's an amazing game, I can't be the only one that thought Driv3r is PL were the games that made the series go all crappy. After almost two decades since the series began, I wanted to tell about my impressions of the series. Driver basically paved way for games like 3D-era GTA's. Driver was the first massive open world driving game (as I know of) and Reflections tried to show off to people, that they can make this. First Driver is a classic videogame for obvious reasons, but the second one was way too abitious and they picked up the wrong system, PS1 didn't have the hardware, that would have payed justice for the game (they should have made it for PS2 instead). My opinion is, that while the game mechanics and driving feel was superb on both games, they both had some significant issues, especially the second one. Issues the first one had were pretty simple afterall, since they were only about the badly balanced difficulty level mostly and couple game mechanic decisions, like, police being way too overpowered/rubberband AI, your car being destroyed if you rolled it, a lot of sticky places on the walls, etc, etc. The plot of the game is pretty much mystery to me, it just isn't easy to understand due lack of development on that aspect. Second one however was even worse technically, since it was basically barely holding together on PS1, having constant extreme framerate drops, texture borders visible everywhere, even worse graphics than the first one and the same issues returning from the first one, being even more bad. In my opinion, the second game was one of the worst PS1 titles, but yet people still remember it being badass, cool and challenging. Extremely difficult game, way too punishing for the player. I had it too and I still liked it, for some parts. With the second game, Reflections clearly tried to enter into more mature audiences with movie-like approach to it, but it was way too abtitious to work out on PS1. They also introduced the ability to get out of the car and walk around the cities, but that part is the thing were they started to go into wrong direction. Controling the character was executed in horrible way and the only but the game ruining issue it had was that the camera was locked to the player, so controlling the player was very frustrating. Other issues it had were pretty significant too, like maps being boring, numerous technical issues, downgraded graphics from the first one and way too high difficulty level. One of the odd decisions was also, that they didn't release it on PC at all, only for PS1. The PC version could have holded up much better. Now, I separated the series into three categories, based on the system generation they released. So next part is obviosly the Driver 3 (Driv3r). This time, Reflections was determined to blow away the people with the quality they tried to produce. Producing values for this title were high, Hollywood-actors voice acting and the overall theme and style they tried to represent for us was even more Hollywood-like car chase movie. Once again, Reflection mastered the driving feeling, one of the things Driver games have always been good at. And this time, the game was graphically pretty, very realistic for its time. Unfortunanently, they spend too much efforts into pretty looks, driving feeling and voice actors, and everything else was rushed out of the door. The game was yet another disaster, barely improving from the second game. This time, they introduced guns to the gameplay and that's where it all went downhill. Player controlling and aiming mechanics were jerky and awful, AI was very dumb, robotic, on-rail like, some of the same issues previous game had were still present (allthou in smaller amounts fortunanently), laughable rubber-band cops, a lots and lots of unfinished places on the maps, where you could fall off from the map. The game was technically ok, it did run smoothly this time without any significant issues, but there still were some minor issues here and there. Difficulty level was also reduced to more acceptable levels, at least when it comes to the driving, but shooting sequences were bombing the game down. In the end, third game in the series had potential, but it once again was way too ambtious for the team to make it through. Now, Driver: Parallel Lines was one of my favourite games when I had it. With this installment, Reflections had lost one of their key member and they wanted to learn their lesson from the previous errors they had made. And they did, this game was significant improvement from the Driver 3. Graphically it was a bit downgraded thou, but the gameplay was improved significantly. Cheaper voice actors did just as good work as expensive Hollywood-actors, so team could focus into the game mechanics more. And it payed off, this time shooting and controlling the player was much more satisfying, yet not quite the best there was. Driving feeling was slightly changed to more lighter approach, but it worked as well. First time ever there also was radio stations and proper soundtrack for the game as well. No technical issues that I could remember and the town felt lively. Unfortunanently there was only one town and two era's, from which the latter one was a bit boring (70's all they way, whehey). Many people regard this game as cheap GTA-clone and unfortunanently, they're right about that. During Driver 3 development, it was clear, that Reflection was rivaling with GTA-series, but failed to deliver the goods. Same thing happened with this game, but this time they were much more closer without any game breaking issues. The game was well accepted by the critics after the awful 3rd installment, but felt short after people realized, that this was ''cheap'' GTA-clone. After some years, we saw Driver-series return to its roots with Driver: San Fransisco. Reflection wanted to get rid of the character controlling and shooting, so they came up with this unique system of having the main character in coma dream, where you could jump from car to car. It definitely brought the series back to its roots, but in the process, people felt odd with the mechanic and the idea as whole (I do too, it just doesn't feel right). Gameplay was excellent in many ways all the way from the handling to the mechanics. Technically it was also good looking game, but the city felt dead, only generic people walking around here and there. Reflection were desperately trying to save themselves and the series, but the damage what the Driver 2 and 3 had made is just too much for the people to get over. In the end, I myself feel, that the Driver-series is a important part of the gaming history, especially on car games, but I can't just see them anymore revelant to current world of gaming. Time for remakes/reboot is not right, or they may never even come. In the end, GTA-series has taken its place as the Number 1 driving game, so putting another Driver-game out now would be a bad move. We need to see, where the gaming world is sailing and who knows, perhaps we once again after some years have the chance to chase down bad guys, run away from the police and perform massive Hollywood-chase movie slides through the corners as the undercover detective. We'll see about that.

I would have liked Driver 2 more if it had a PC release, it would be easier to play these days if it did. All that slow down the game has.....oh well I'm used to it but I'd still rather not have it.

I never really got into the stories until Driver: San Francisco, but they were always fun to mess around with the cars and bikes. Also, I played Parallel Lines once on PS2 and could've sworn the speedometer was a strip at the bottom of the screen

Driver 1 and 2 looked like GTA III except with no guns, didn't they?
@Nivec2178 жыл бұрын
And then Driv3r really turned into GTA. It had guns and everything.

I disagree. The graphics for driv3r were better but game play of gta was better. I've spent hours on hours on both these games.
