That first dress was obviously shortened for a tall child to wear after out growing their clothes. Also, there were plenty of beautiful dresses during the war years, before Dior's so-called New Look. Check out the book, Forties Fashion by Jonathan Walford.

Yeah... dresses during the war were shorter, but not much above the knees. And Dior lengthened the typical dress length to be more calf length, too!

First dress was about 4 inches too short for the period. Should be right above knee not mid-thigh and how would a silk dress be considered "day-wear" during an era where silk was impossible to get. I like the series but why are all the models so incredibly wooden? They all seem uncomfortable in the both the clothes and shoes.

The glamor of the late 40s will never be matched, All the women were so beautiful with those victory rolls, elegant simple suits and minimal make up with pop up red lips. I look at my grandma's photos, simple but so elegant.

No lady I ever saw in the 40's in my neck of the woods ever wore such a short dress as the first one! Mind you Northampton wasn't exactly the fashion epicentre. Once in the 50's sitting on a bus I was told by an older women to cover my knees!! I suppose it may well have been shortened and of course the young model is a bit taller than women were then.

+Sue Harvey I was looking through pictures of my grandma from the 50s and 60s and she wore similar dresses to that. She's from Durham.

+Sue Harvey Perhaps also the modern, super-tall, leggy model was not the typical wearer of such a short dress.

I agree with Sue, that first dress seems suspiciously short. To be honest, I don't think the owner of 'Vintage2Versace' could tell the difference between vintage and Versace if it was stapled onto his forehead

I've always loved the New Look. It was the complete antithesis of the austerity experienced both during & after WWII. Many people don't realise that, here in the UK, rationing didn't end at the same time as the fighting. It was gradually phased out, with the last restrictions ending at the beginning of July, 1954. I believe the New Look proved popular for many reasons, among them the fact it was so glamorous while the war years were wholly utilitarian. It was a celebration of life, being a young pretty style, & it was a luxury being able to buy what you wanted & not have to count clothing coupons. It was also completely new, & we humans have a penchant for novelty. I'm enjoying this series of videos, although I would love them to last longer so that you could go into a lot more detail. Thanks for uploading them 😀

Ok I get that the late forties was more "glamorous" but there's no reason to completely ignore the workwear trend that was necessary during the war, especially considering the lasting affect it had!

There was plenty change in fashion worth talking about between 1939 and 1945, women wore trousers and knee length skirts in public, and were considered correctly dressed. Women had never before worn clothes like they did during the war. The austerity in the war time fashion has been a huge impact ever since. The “New Look” was not universally liked or appreciated, people were still struggling after the war. Plenty women were outraged about Dior wanting to push them back into cumbersome long and wide skirts, the clothes they were wearing now looked a lot different (narrower and much more appropriate for daily wear).

The first dress was shortened. No one would ever wear a dress that short in the 40s. Plus her shoes were from the 60s. It just looks bad. If your going to do episodes about an era it should probably be period authentic. Meaning hair, make-up, clothes, and shoes so people get the full effect.

All had big bosoms then. Dont know if it was the bra but it was definitely the diet. The old fashioned diet semed to have made women top heavy. Women in my country had bigger breasts 50 +years ago too. Unfair.
