History of Jaguars in Arizona

"By the late 1960s, jaguars were thought to have been eliminated in the United States. A female was shot by a hunter in Arizona's White Mountains in 1963. Arizona outlawed jaguar hunting in 1969, but by then no females remained and over the next 25 years only two male jaguars were found (and killed) in Arizona. Then in 1996, Warner Glenn, a rancher and hunting guide from Douglas, Arizona, came across a jaguar in the Peloncillo Mountains and became a researcher on jaguars, placing webcams which recorded four more Arizona jaguars. No jaguars sighted in Arizona in the last 15 years had been seen since 2006. Then, in 2009, a male jaguar named Macho B died shortly after being radio-collared by Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) officials in 2009. In the Macho B incident, a former ADGF subcontractor pleaded guilty to violating the endangered species act for trapping the cat and a Game and Fish employee was fired for lying to federal investigators. In 2011, a male jaguar weighing 200 lb (91 kg) was photographed near Cochise in southern Arizona by a hunter after being treed by his dogs (the animal left the scene unharmed). A second 2011 sighting of an Arizona jaguar was reported by a Homeland Security border pilot in June 2011, and conservation researchers sighted two jaguars within 30 mi (48 km) of the border between Mexico and the United States in 2010.
In September 2012, a jaguar was photographed in the Santa Rita Mountains of Arizona, the second such sighting in this region in two years. This jaguar has been photographed numerous times over the past nine months through June 2013. On 3 February 2016, the Center for Biological Diversity released a video of this jaguar - now named El Jefe (Spanish for "The Boss") - roaming the Santa Rita Mountains, about 25 mi (40 km) south of downtown Tucson. El Jefe is the fourth jaguar sighted in the Madrean Sky Islands in southern Arizona and New Mexico, over the last 20 years." - from Wikipedia
On 16 November 2016, a jaguar was spotted in the Dos Cabezas Mountains of Arizona, 60 mi (97 km) from the Mexican border, the farthest north one of these animals has been spotted in many decades. It is the seventh jaguar to be confirmed in the Southwest since 1996.[18] On 1 December 2016, another male jaguar was photographed on Fort Huachuca also in Arizona.[17] In February 2017, authorities revealed that a third jaguar had been photographed in November 2016, by the Bureau of Land Management in the Dos Cabezas Mountains, also in Arizona, some 100.0 km (62.1 miles) north of the border with Mexico.[18]
Let us remember the jaguar is only trying to regain the territory it used to cover long before humans arrived, and especially long before European settlers showed up. The long standing debate over the reintroduction of large predators to former territory rages on in this case as well, considering this is the largest predator cat in the western hemisphere we are talking about. It is well proven now that predators have a majorly beneficial effect on the ecology of the land by preventing herd animals from overgrazing the plant life, and helping improve genetics for prey species. There are solutions at the disposal of ranchers to prevent their own herds from falling victim to this beast’s natural predator drive. Just like with the Mexican Grey Wolf, time will only tell if humans can overcome their fear of predator species and learn to co-exist on the land as integral parts of the web of life.

I was at Davis Monthan in 97, went for a hike south of there by myself quite a few miles out. I camped, and as I awoke early, just as the sun broke I spotted a jaguar slowly creeping through a wash. When I got back to Tuscon I reported it, I was told by the 'authorities' that I must have been hallucinating, so of course I was drug tested...PASSED. At which point I was called into another room, there was a man and a woman already sitting in there. As I sat down they told me that I was to keep this to myself and that I didn't see anything. It was the oddest shit I ever went through in the service. Made no sense. I know what I saw, I'm a survivalist and have spent many years in nature in many parts of the world. It was an awesome moment, ruined for me by bureaucracy.

The lady told him there was no way and that he should quit drinking before noon. He called back to try to speak with someone else, and was told again they didnt exist anywhere near there. This time he responded with "well then I'll just shoot it because I have livestock and grandkids"! Her response "Sir if you shoot it you will be arrested, they are endangered" To which he said "well you can't arrest me for shooting something that you swear doesn't exist" Lol, if I recall correctly I read that in Field & Stream magazine. Here in Brazil there is a subspecies of crocodilians called "Jacaré açu" which is the third largest species of crocodilians in the world, measuring about 4.50, some reaching more than 6 meters, and weighing between 320 kg and 500 kg. Many of our National parks and wildlife refuges (particularly those close to the borders) are being overrun by drug activity and many areas are no longer safe for US citizens to enjoy due to cartel drug activity and lawlessness. Unfortunately, some kind of measure need to be enacted or there won't be any place for jaguars or Citizens. I hate the thought of border walls, but we may have not other choice. Either way, I pray the jaguar continues to increase it's population in the US. Great channel and great work you're doing! These are incredible animals.

No bigger proponent than myself for saving the jaguar. They are a majestic animal and we need to do everything we can to foster their comback. However, if we don't have a border wall, the American citizen will become non-existent (extinct). We can still build a border wall and re-introduce jaguars on the US side of the fence. We've re-introduced animals like the Bison, Brown bear, Elk, etc. in a similar fashion. So, it's misleading the tie a border wall to the re-introduction of the jaguar.

I am very excited to see this video and hear this info regarding habitat set aside for jaguars. These big cats are amazing and we really need them to rebound in the US. The same goes for ocelots. The issue is of course that our southern border is wide open and as a result there are now organized terrorist cells throughout the country. This is a real conundrum. Would it be possible that the 830,000 acres already set aside would be enough to secure a healthy jaguar population? The situation is a delicate one. It really sux that the powers that be have put the possibility of a jaguar comeback in jeopardy by extension through blatant disregard of national security.

In 1980 when I was 8 y/o driving from Arizpe Sonora (close to Arizona border), with my mom, in the middle of the road we found a dead black jaguar with yellow and white dots. I didn’t know it was a jaguar at the time, I remember being puzzled as I knew it wasn’t a mountain lion. Now I know it was a jaguar.

Antes del siglo XX, vaqueros estadounidenses simplemente copiaban la práctica de cazarlos exactamente en la misma manera que hicieron los colonos desde el siglo XVII. Apuradamente como en el otro lado de la frontera, ellos vendían las pieles de los gatos grandes. En México estaba un lugar donde podrían los jaguares evitar la caza, en las montañas (la Sierra Madre Occidental.) Eso no existió en muchos lugares en el lado norte del Río Bravo. Aun peor, soldados del este plus inmigrantes de Europa comenzaban a llenar los pueblos, las fortalezas, etc. en busca del oro, de la plata, y tierra para ganado. Un piel de jaguar se valió la mitad de un año de salario a un vaquero estadounidense. El fin de la masacre no llegó hasta demasiado tarde. Es culpa nuestra que no tenemos el jaguar no más. Pero los rancheros de Chihuahua, de Sonora, etc. se aseguran que no pueden regresar. Ahora mismo ellos se matan a muchos gatos antes de poder cruzar la frontera/Río Bravo. I can speak to cats but they rarely listen especially large cat game. Ive seen a male cat flex cuz another male took his moms affection away. And the large cat said my balls are bigger then his. 😱 oh wow. Kitty no be polite. The cat says I am also wayyyy more beautiful too.

@@SusRoDah sorry but yes most large cats superiority depends on size and alpha usually kills the animal based on size of testicles. It's hereditary like best animal survive. And idk why cats male cats especially be like my testicle are literally larger than yours and they look at other males like they have disease. I have always had a cat I just understand them. I just feed them I see them starve, I have a main coon right now I resued. She chases moths waiting under the light like clock work. Lol it comes on at night and I hate she is so fast she eats them. It's animal kingdom tho I don't make it, just observing.

Those were grizzly bears, still found in Alaska, which are pretty dangerous. California still has the smaller "brown" bears (not sure the Latin name) in some areas.

Saw one by one of my secret escape campsites... Not a mountain lion... Smaller than a mountain lion... It ran from me as I approached it... I had no weapon... There was a cat in the tree at night... I think it was a Bob cat... Bob cat is not a jaguar or a mountain lion... The mountain lion is the dangerous one and loves to kill even when not hungry... Worse than humans...

I am for the border wall now and more than ever. Too many of these people come from so many countries. Think of the 911 attack and you will see my point.
