Today, Apple has the largest and most diverse product ecosystem in history. From smartphones to tablets to smart watches, we’ve never seen Apple compete in so many industries simultaneously. But with all these new products, it’s easy to forget that Apple started as a computer company. And their Macintosh operating system, also known as macOS, has been around since 1984. So in this video, we’re going to explore the history of macOS, and find out how it’s grown and evolved over the past four decades.

@@jadinhtvt6870 Lion came out after Snow Leopard. Im not sure but i think that was in 2011. The first OS version which was only available from the AppStore. I don't remember too much as it was a long time ago. I think the auto save was introduced in Lion, but I'm not entirely sure. That was a great feature. I think Craig Federighi had some `windows` jokes with his shaking hand on the magic mouse. I think that was the WWDS in 2011 when he was super nervous. :)

@@jadinhtvt6870 I had Lion running on the first Mac Pro, and that was an unhappy mariage. Very, very unstable, but I can't tell if it was the OS or the chimera hardware (both 32 and 64 bit parts). Luckily, it was just used as a guest PC for my summer guests and for watching DVDs on a larger screen than my 13'' MBP. (I've never had a TV). As a courtesy I installed Google Chrome for one of the guest who was used to that interface. Took the whole machine down so hard I had to re-format the harddrive and re-install Lion after trying every trick in the book to recover. No chance.

In 1994, I was brought into a room full of the original Macintoshes. I sat down and without any instruction, I began using it and the applications. Prior to this, I'd never used a mouse before, but it was all so intuitive. Eighteen years later, I switched from Windows to Mac (Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion) and it felt so familiar and intuitive. It's amazing how far macOS has evolved since 2012 and how relevant it is still is, despite the emergence of mobile devices like iPhone and iPad. So far, they've come very close to the PC experience, but have just fallen short.

Undeterred, I got one of the first aluminum unibody MacBooks in 2008. Really enjoyed that computer. Wish I still had it, made the mistake of selling it to buy a gaming rig. Apple user here, since 1987. I _JUST_ now noticed the side profile of the original Mac (or Mac Plus) at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="188">3:08</a> and how the angle and bottom notch near the keyboard matches the "nose" profile in the MacOS logo. I bet most people have seen that for decades. I'm an idiot. So really the MacOS logo is like 2 original Macs with one turned 90 degrees in front of the other one. Absolutely brilliant. They are just missing the eye but they could have put the speakers in the side case for them. Missed opportunity.

What an incredible stroll down memory lane. I've been a Mac user since 1992 with the Mac Plus running System 6 in the graphics lab of Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology in Sudbury, Ontario, where I was taking graphic design. I just purchased a new MacBook Pro 14" running Sonoma, my first non-refurbished Mac since the purchase of a new PowerMac G4 back in 2000. It's nice to see where features were introduced and came of age over the past 30+ years.

Wow. What a trip down memory lane for me. Though, I really stopped using Mac OS X full time after Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) was released. And you are correct --Snow Leopard was an AWESOME OS. It was rock stable, fast, and the workspaces were a highly useable grid (rather than the linear layout introduced with Lion). I was super productive in Snow Leopard. But after Lion eliminated or changed the way I was used to working, I went ahead and ended up loading Windows 7 on my primary Mac at the time and got back to work. These days, I find Ubuntu Mate to be a great coding working environment, but still live in Windows 10 about a 25-30% of the time as well. I used Macs from the late 1980s till Lion drove me away. Thanks for the nostalgia!

Worked for a regional Internet service provider in the early days of the public Internet. My fellow system administrator was a published author in FreeBSD. Since the birth of WWW websites was created on a NeXT host system. When Steve Jobs came back to Apple, and in effect took NeXT OS updated it to run on Mac's. At the core of what we now know as macOS is a FreeBSD UNIX base. Apple has submitted OS X for certification (and received it,) every version since 10.5. So with what is now macOS being FreeBSD UNIX based we purchased the education all white version of the G3 all in one for the office so we could support our customers who purchased Apple Mac's. I myself who had the original 1984 Macintosh moved "Back to Mac" for personal use with the introduction of the Intel iMac. In fact until they stopped supporting 32 bit Linux for my old iMac I used it up until last year. Now with the new M series Apple iMac's I will soon be moving from Intel to Apple M series chip set. Thing is it looks like it will have Linux support down the road.

Man, just recently I turned on or booted up three of my old Macs, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac. All three of these I bought back in 2010 and when I first turned them on, they were running the highest high Sierra except for one. One of them ran Mac OS X lion, which was a throwback. But I eventually updated that one to High Sierra and my MacBook Pro to macOS Catalina with a patcher. But surprisingly, they still run and have a use the iMac I use as a TV or to stream KZbin the MacBook Pro. I run it as a security camera computer and the MacBook Air. I have a sitting around but every once in a while I would use it. I never traded in any Macs because they were not worth it. I also believe that the fact that I upgraded all of those Mac to the eye aspect when I bought it from 2010 that it still runs almost 15 years later. But I do currently own a Mac mini from 2018 and a MacBook Air 2020, which I specked out too. But just recently I’ve actually bought a new 2023 MacBook Pro 16in with a M3 max 40 Core GPU chip. I also loaded it with 128 GB of RAM and a 4TB of storage. This came out to like six grand, but Apple financing is helping me and I personally love it and think this will also last me another 15 years. This is probably overkill for even 10 years or 15 years, but I wanted to match the specs of my PC.😅

Brings back lost of nostalgic memories. The video is completely right about the first version of Mac OS being slow. After upgrading the Mac OS 9 on my black Powerbook G3 to Mac OS X, it became incredibly slow, to the point of being unusable! But I loved the new OS so much that instead of downgrading back to Mac OS 9, I went out and bought a new Titanium PowerBook G4. Was worth the enhanced user experience.

Actually the Lisa was Apple’s first GUI based computer. It didn’t sell well, but it was still the first. The Xerox Star was released 3 years before Macintosh. Xerox got their product to market before Apple. I would like to see a video that discusses the orgins of Mac OS X. It all started with NeXT. OS X was a revamp of NeXTSTEP. Today all of Apple’s operating systems have their roots in the work done at NeXT. Most Apple users have no idea that manh of the technologies running their devices were created over 30 years ago.

The reason for the slow UI of early OS X is more related to the fact, that it uses "Display PDF" rendering technique, derived from "Display PostScript" of the NeXT Computer is based on (which was infamous for the incredible display quality while being a slow UI ;) So basically anything on the screen is a PDF document. With Quarz Core I think in 10.4 Apple build a much quicker rendering engine and the UI became much faster (If I understand that correctly, it uses calculation power of the graphics chips). This is the reason why even today the display quality of macOS is still higher than most other computer Systems.

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="289">4:49</a> Before System 7, there was quite a lot of work happening in the 6.0.x series. You don't know anything. G. you don't know anything. I will do everything. So in the 1990's the American Military invented the Internet and it soon became public. They owned the domains ".com", ".net" and ".org". They costed $8-13 Then there was a new organization that assigned every country a 2 letter code. The cost was made by the country. Now I have told you about domains. Yes they are called domains. You have a Dynamic IP Address. Which changes and isn't reliable because it changes. It makes it possible to connect to the internet otherwise it would be one person at a time. You need a Static IP Address. If you type ""6.6.6.6" in you browser it will bring you to nothing. Search it in an engine and you would see that it's somewhere in America. Your IP Address will change and will bring you somewhere else. Programming isn't hard It is an Advertisement. You will have to find a good place which is very easy. Don't spend half of your time in H.T.M.L. use that ii C.S.S. because you will need to learn all the properties. I hate Javascript. I am suspicious of React because Jens at Mojang said "Facebook creeps me out.". I don't know of PHP and it looks like an Email List. For Sql you have Microsoft Access. There is a thing called a C.M.S. It is 40mb bloatware that slowly rises to 1gb. I am trying to make a Off Site C.M.S. but I would have to break all of security. Most W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G. editors don't have advanced features to make a real website. Dreamweaver is close but you still have to code. I'm really good at this. I have written way more than this for average.

MacOS and the iOS family share the same kernel (the invisible part of an operating system), but the biggest design principle of iOS from Steve Jobs himself is that the mobile operating system should never have a dedicated file manager (Finder in MacOS). Each app would be responsible for file management appropriate for itself. That changes the focus of development tremendously.

The key thing to understand of going from Mojave to Catalina is not that it dropped 32bit apps, it dropped a whole application OS within an OS that had been there since the begining: CarbonOS. The dual OS of CarbonOS + AppKitOS moved to AppKitOS + iOS, discontining an entire OS platform and the programs made for it. As seismic as dropping the ClassicOS and moving to the NeXTOS based platforms of AppKitOS and iOS.

I’ve been using Mac OS since system 7.0 in 1993 all the way to currently using macOS Big Sur. I never forget the kernel panics in OS X 10.0. My favorite was system 8.5/8.6. Also the OS X snow leopard because of the icons are not flat looking like today and the rich features.. Most corporates have gone flat logo and icons since for about a decade. Oh by the way I do like macOS Big Sur. It does have a mixture of iPadOS and macOS in one.

Nice stroll down memory lane, for sure. Start of mini-rant: My only critique, coupled with a request for a change, is about the soundtrack. The track in and of itself is fine for me, I suppose. And it was rather subtle in this one, compared to the other two videos that I have seen/heard that you used it in. But try as I may, try as I might, I just couldn't help but be distracted by it. It was better for the two videos for the model retrospectives of iPhones and iPads. As it is now, it does not feel fine as a signature soundtrack because I feel that it doesn't quite fit this video. Maybe it would work better (for me) if the duration loop length was somehow longer, overall. But the transitions between the end and beginning are just a touch too pronounced, such that it is. And it would be good to just mix things up a bit more with other tunes. Thanks for listening. End of mini-rant. Trepidatiously looking forward to checking out more of yer other videos.

Mac was not first consumer computer to use Graphical User Interface. Not even lisa was the first. Probably the first was Xerox Alto. But Mac was definitely a pinnacle computer in terms of elegance and user friendliness. It refined GUI in so many ways, it drove the entire industry and even tho commercially it was a flop, the first Mac always stood as a benchmark of how GUI should work and behave
