Funnily enough the normal counter actually has better knockback resistance then the power guard. If you block an attack that’s to strong with a normal counter you simply don’t counterattack but you don’t move an inche while power guard would get you knocked back a little bit

The leaping thrust as an alternative follow up to the advancing guard, the clutch claw use as a counter thrust alternative that could make up for its low damage with easy wounding and not to mention the ridiculous affinity boost it provides with the weakness exploiter skill, but above all the ability to launch a barrage of slinger ammo while always guarding, which is great for building up stagger to then knock a Wyvern over for some damage.

Interesting factabout Tri's lance; If you used the Wii motion controls, the counter happened by titlting the wiimote to the left and interestingly enough it was actually much faster to counter with the weapon because of this. Because counter generally required you to press "guard" before the counter motion actually happens, even if the counter inputs were executed perfectly on the controller it was still quite a bit slower.. So the Wiimote was far superior in this instance. This however did change in 3U version.

At this point, I accept Lance's sorry state in Rise. It's treated this way because it has a "shield" as its main component. Devs focused too much on the shield aspect that they've forgotten the Lance part. Dmg is So-so for the most part but its sad because your most Dmg'ing moves is the CWS and ST spam. Which breaks the momentum and rhythm Lance is suppose to have. GenU Lance was the same, spam 1 high MV move as your DPS. World Lance was the best iteration it has and I wish Rise Lance inclined to more of that instead of GenU Lance. World Lance used ALL of its moveset to properly dance with the monster to death, relentless guards and pokes. Its like the Rise devs looked at World devs and said "That's nice... but I like this" to GenU Lance. "Lance has counters though? Isn't their Dmg okay to be lowered because they have a way to safely attack" N O ? Almost all the weapons in Rise have some sort of countermechanic now with AMAZING rewards for doing so. Longsword is the biggest offender of this, it spits on Lance's Insta-block (mind you the tightest counter window in-game) and its flimsy double slap. Hammer has some cool counter with the Water Strike set. Bow has dodgebolt, CB has a counter into AED(?) HBG also has a counter... lmao. Sad Anyways I Love Lance to death, I play it like World despite the lower DPS because it feels so right rather than spamming ST or CWS.
@csg1lcolonel5282 жыл бұрын
I'd like to point a couple of things out. The first is what's probably the biggest use for power guard outside of tanking multihits: canceling block recoil. Because you're able to follow up with a power guard after blocking any heavy attack, the need for higher levels of guard is negated. Furthermore, health augments in world also negated the chip damage from the weapon. Another little-known fact about power guard is its inherent guard up after holding the stance long enough, which lets you tank certain unblockable attacks. The second, more important point to discuss is how lance was used in older games, notably gen and 4u. In 4u, the skill evasion +3 granted a stupid amount of s for any dodge, including backhops. Backhops, coincidentially, also lasted as long as those s before you could activate another. This means that chaining 3 backhops together would let you through almost any attack. This completely negated the need for a shield, and thus, evade lancing was born. In Generations, the evasion skill was nerfed to 2 levels. However, thanks to the addition of hunter arts, specifically absolute evasion and absolute readiness, which granted a ton of s, and enraged guard, which provided a massive attack boost, evade lancing is still powerful to this day, perhaps even surpassing 4u lance. Striker lance's charge finisher has a whopping 70 mv, and paired with the hunter art gauge boost from deviant weapons and striker style, allowed lancers to basically spam hunter arts. This was actually buffed in gen ultimate, as sp mode gives striker style natural hunter art regen. Adept lance, although not as popular, is still used by a large portion of lancers in both generations and rise. This, much like evade lancing, negated the need for guard skills. However, instead of relying on s, adept lance changed the standard guard into an adept guard, which, after blocking any attack, could be followed up with a cross slash, a sidestep, or another guard. While this seems just as effective as evade lancing, it is much more difficult to time an adept guard, and it's harder to chain into one from an attack. Lastly, tanky/traditional lance is the final prevailing play style, and focuses on guard skills and counters. While survivability is highest with this style, damage output is low, as time attacking, as well as offensive skills, are traded for defense.
@Tyuzinhuh3 жыл бұрын
A bit of an adition: The hability to do the counter stance after the last attack in the triple poke combo has been brought back in World and it still persists in Rise. It's one of the reasons why the weapon felt so good in the 5th generation. Also in Tri and 3U, Lance was really the king of underwater combat since positioning wasn't that big of a deal and you could just stay there and block/counter every attack, and because lance pokes are really precise it made for a really easy time underwater.
@the333gamer3333 жыл бұрын
A little "hidden" tech about MHW lance (and gunlance too) is that you can aim with L2/LT while your shield is up, meaning that you can do side/backwards guard dashes and also longhops out of neutral instead of after an attack, this also lets you aim the Wyvernblast of the gunlance. And also (unless I misunderstood) 14:23 Power Guard actually increases chip damage, so yeah, be careful when guarding big attacks
@masonhales8 ай бұрын
I'd say the lance is the #2 most iconic weapon of Monster Hunter, just behind the great sword. The lance weapon pose (shown on many of the box covers of the game) is on the same level as the Michael Jordan basketball logo, when you see it you simply think "Monster Hunter"
@noelllanes123 жыл бұрын
Just a quick note on power guard in world. While it does not drain stamina when blocking, you conversely take more chip damage. This makes it much worse when blocking multi-hit as compared to simply blocking or guard dashing. Essentially it's there to block big hits that you don't have enough guard in your set for normally or if you don't have enough stamina at that moment in the fight.

Lance is my first love and true main of the series. It's a weapon that I can depend on to kill the monster effectively with minimal risk if time is not a factor.

Hurray some love for the lance :D Not sure if you wanna hear about this, but there were a few things that you missed: The swipe gives you „super armor“ so you can ignore things like long swords and switch axes (I don’t know since when it does that but I’m pretty sure it does that at least since 4th gen) If you receive heavy knockback that moves you backwards you can enter the power guard by pressing X/A/B The midair thrust you can do from twin vine is actually a bit stronger that a regular midair thrust (motion value of 40 instead of 30 I think) The shield charge can also perform a thrusting finisher by pressing A instead of X

since sun break is coming up i hope they rework twin vine, something like attaching it to the end of the lance so that it has more range or something simple. the only thing you can really do now to almost guarantee that it will hit is doing a guarded advance then twin vine

About Anchor Rage, the damage boost seems to be based on knockback rather than damage, which is why the skill guard is not recommended if you use anchor rage.

Little late, but a couple of things about twin vine that were a little easy to miss. It reduces knockback significantly when connected to the monster as well as reducing stamina cost. Also, the jump you can do actually has invincibility frames making it a good move-in/dodge tool. it will also activate faster if you initiate the jump right before an attack, causing you to block the hit and jump immediately after.

Fun Fact: In Rise.. the damage bonus you get from Anchor Rage isn't based on the damage or power of the incoming attack... it's based on the KNOCKBACK of it... So powerful roars actually give the highest bonus despite dealing no damage. In addition to this it means that the damage bonus is inversely affected by Guard armor skill, if you have higher levels of guard you'll get a smaller bonus. The skill to take instead if you want to take high levels of Guard is the replacement Spiral Thrust... Spiral Thrust cannot activate at all if the attack has too much knockback so it gets very much better with Guard.

Godly retrospective for a godly weapon. I do have a question, do you plan on changing your previous weapon history thumbnails more in line with the more recent ones to maintain consistency or nah?
