The lance isn't about hiding behind a shield like a coward. It's about getting in the monsters face and poking em in the eye with a sharp stick again and again and again and never letting up the pressure because I don't have to. I am going to wear this beast down to a nub without breaking a sweat, always hitting em where it hurts most. No matter how a monster rages against my onslaught, my shield is unbreakable and my stamina is bottomless. No matter how the monster flees, I give chase to the ends of the continent and back. Like my ancestors before me I will conquer the land with a sharp stick and hucking rocks.
@SmittyWerbenjagermandragon10 ай бұрын
The lancer is indeed no coward, anyone who says the lance is for the timid has no clue what they are on about. The lancer jeers at every beast they hunt, inviting them to try their hand at prying The Immovable Object from its throne.

Haven't tried lance outside of world yet, but it feels like it needs a better reason to use the power guard, other than being able to turn any direction world having "guard up" be applied after a second is nice, but generally you get guard up anyway if you're fighting a tougher monster. a sort of super counter would be nice, sortof like rise greatsword's rage switch skill, where if you get hit after that little flash, you do a LOT more damage, however you can waste it by getting hit before that flash pops up, leading to a slightly heavier poke i feel lance just needs a buff to counters, they feel very pointless when you can get near the same effect with guarding at the last second and then poking

Gonna give my perspective here as someone who has only seriously played World and only recently did that.. Insect Glaive was the most thematically interesting to me, but it looked complicated (I remember wishing it was just the Glaive and there was no Kinsect to complicate it lol) every weapon seemed fun to me when I first started. A lot of beginner guides were suggesting to pick a weapon and stick with it for 50 hunts or so, and I sure tried to but I couldn't make myself do it. Why lock myself off from 13/14 playstyles for such a long time? So I took the time in the practice area and against various monsters to get base level comfortable with a few of them. At first, it was Bow, Dual Blades, SnS and Insect Glaive. I thought I'd be a bow main until I got to Tobi Kadachi and got zapped apart - he was the first monster I struggled with and while I got the kill without any carts, I didn't feel like I earned it so I immediately went back and hunted him 3 more times. SnS couldn't keep up with him, Bow part 2 went pretty much the same, Dualies did alright, but Insect Glaive made me feel like I was the hunter and he was the hunted. At first I was overthinking IG pretty badly, but eventually got the advice to just focus on getting red buff and spamming combos, then figured out how to stay airborne for extended periods and it clicked for me. Since then I've just been massively comfortable with IG over anything else. I fought Barioth in IB for the first time recently and chased his ass to the ends of the earth.. Like, straight up bullied him to the point of humiliation. I figured he was just a simple, straightforward fight so I went to the Arena to do his event for Guild Palace weapons and tried a few other weapons I thought I'd be comfortable with - got spanked pretty bad with everything. Even fire elemental Dualies got me beat up way more than I thought I would. I thought maybe I was just tired so I grabbed Insect Glaive again, did exactly the same arena mission and once again dogwalked him, only getting hit once or twice during the whole fight. That's when I realized I had a main weapon lol. Tl;Dr is that my main weapon picked me for the most part. Sure, I liked the concept, but not necessarily more than any other weapon. It just ended up clicking with me and becoming what I was most aggressive, confident and comfortable overall with. I still love many of the other weapons, but they're going to take a lot of intentional failing with to get to the same level as IG which came somewhat naturally. Maybe one of the weapons will (or already does) come more naturally to you?

I must say this video has put a huge smile on my face. The overwhelming sense of pride flooding through me as a listen to someone clearly, concisely, and completely encapsulating what it means to be a shield god. I’m a hunter from the first fleet, and have been a Lance main since the very first game. Rathalos tail carve farming (looking for the ever elusive plate), the utility of flinch locking while the rest of the team desperately cut at the tail, it feels as though that was one of the last times lance mains were truly appreciated by the community. You asked what an older lance player may think of the 5th gen version of the weapon, and honestly it’s bittersweet. On one hand, it’s exactly as you say, Lance allows you to play the game in a truly aggressive way, you give no quarter and take everything from every possible opportunity, often making your own. On the other because the lance boasts a low skill floor, that many don’t bother looking up to see that the ceiling is so incredibly high, while requiring a heavy basis of skills or decoration to function can be a huge turn off for new players learning the weapon. My hood in the future of lance, is for things like the skills guard and offensive guard, to be baked into the weapon from the onset, similar to charge blade charging its shield to get guard+2, this would give more flexibility options to builds in the future, similar to how anchor rage and insta-block have for rise. Sorry for the rant, it’s not often I get to talk about lance. But I just want you to know that hearing your video about picking up the lance made my day.

Hello, Elder. I am a member of the fifth fleet, during my time in the new world I used many sorts of weapons, all felt good but none felt perfect. The moment I lifted that shield in my arms and raised the pin pointed steel arm I felt it, the desire to stand before the beasts of the new world and pierce their hide as their claws rake across my shield and leave no marks! It took time but I grew my armor and the skills forged into it to become an immovable fortress that could pierce the heavens! The clutch claw may not be a favorite of all ages of hunters but using it to grapple to the monster to punish its insolence had me giddier than a charging Kirin. I hope I can be accepted as a member of the other fleets. Should you have any wisdom then I would be overjoyed to receive it, it will be less than a year before the fleets are ready to move to a new frontier, the wilds. We have yet to receive much information but what we know is of the advancements they have made. I believe we hunters will keep learning, growing, and evolving....but so will our beastly opponents. May we hold our shields steady and thrust straight and true! Never let up and never fail!
@navarre214211 ай бұрын
I do think its fairly understated how good the lance is in rise though. The massive elemental values combined with lunging thrusts, the enemy's aggression combined with your ability to chain insta blocks and counter with big hits, also anchor rage and last but certainly not least, sheathing retreat - They all make this weapon really good against a lot of monsters other weapons struggle with. In terms of hunting efficiency its more like mid tier overall, and mid-high tier amongst melee weapons.

Monster Hunter itself is the thing I did not expect to love back when I started in Tri, unlike lance which as a weapon identity hit every check (started out with SnS though, a "beginner" weapon that I feel gets undeserved "beginner" impression). And the way you describe it is exactly why I love Lance too, I'm just a masochist looking for a socially acceptable outlet XD. But yeah I see a lot of people mistake lance as a "tank" weapon (and I do love my tanks in other games but Monster Hunter isn't those games) but it's actually one of the most agressive weapons, because ultimate agression is being unstoppable. When a monster can do nothing to shake you off, then you just get to attack without stop. Monster Hunter however, as many have thought, is a much slower game than many others and I wasn't sure I was gonna stick around. But the atmosphere, loop and amazing creature design made me stick around. Now today I have 7 creator model figures (Nergigante, Teostra, Valstrax, Palamute/Cohoot, Rajang, Mizutsune and my fav nargacuga), some of the japanese versions of games to play them early, the World collector's edition, 2 posters (one bought yesterday at a con) aaaaand an actual painstakingly crafted cosplay of the Silverwind Nargacuga armor with my mom and certainly my best yet. I think I am in that rabbit hole to stay.

So, on a whim I decided to try the lance instead, just to see if I liked it. I branched out to hammer when I found out how easy it was to break horns and found it fun as well. I've experimented here and there but nothing really leapt out at me, so my main arsenal stayed long sword, dual blades, and hammer for a long time. When a friend started World I created a new character and decided to learn a new weapon all the way through the game and I picked up the switch axe and had a lot of fun to my surprise. Again in iceborne I experimented here and there but nothing new really stuck. Now I'm going through another new game cycle as I bought the game on my PC and I'm learning sword and shield and loving it. I think for me going through the phases of the game committed to an entirely new weapon just really does it for me, it's almost like learning a new game. So glad to see a video just showering this weapon with love. I'm in the exact same boat as you, where I finished MHW(and Iceborne) and was just looking for new ways to keep playing the game. I got one of the kjarr paralysis lances from Kulve and boxed it to maybe try out lance one day, and I dabbled with it here and there but never really expected it to go anywhere (I was primarily a GS main with some hammer here and there). But then, it clicked. The movement, the footwork, the onslaught of attacks and never having to sheath my weapon or heal during fights. I felt the Thrill of the battle, it felt like a true Duel. I don't think I've ever hunted with the GS again after that, and this is coming from someone that almost exclusively used GS since Monster Hunter Freedom. All of my GS weapons and loadouts in MHW were replaced with Lances, and I doubled my overall game playtime just playing and improving with the lance after that. I played through MHR:SB with lance and now I'm playing through MH3U with lance, and plan on going back through MH4U and GU next. I've never become so passionate about a weapon before, and I play most of the non-range weapons. But it breaks my heart knowing that 99% of the player base don't see this weapon for what it truly is. An aggressive, unending powerhouse with a surprisingly high skill ceiling.

I've been a lance main for quite a long time. And it's honestly the most purely aggressive weapon in the game. It's the definition of a great defense is the best offense. People use the term "Brawler weapon" for Hammer and GS because they like to be aggressive and at the head of the monster, and although I think those weapons do belong at the head of a monster more so than the lance if you're in a party with someone using one, purely because they can dish out more damage at the head while the lance can focus other weak points, there is just no weapon that is more comfortable and at ease than the lance at the head of a monster. No weapon in the game can just go Toe To Toe with a monster like the lance can. It's -almost- feels like with any other weapon, you are reacting to the monster, but with a lance, the monster is reacting to you. Or that with every other weapon the monster is fighting you, while against a good lance user, the monster is fighting just purely for it's survival. With a lance, you are the threat to the monster, not the other way around. As CR here put it, you are an absolute psychopath and you love it. And boy do I love it. I don't get that rush with anything else. It's really hard to convoy that to people who have not mastered the lance, but in my experience almost anyhow who does master the lance eventually just gets it. It's not the flashiest weapon with the most fun combos, but I really don't think it needs to be. It's the best weapon purely out of it's play style alone once you understand it.

Follow up with a leaping thrust to the face and I was hooked for life.

I started my love for lance around Icebornes release and haven't gone back since. I'm even playing all thes games in order now as a lancer with a friend who loves hammer, and is similarly taking a weapon journey. If I had to add one bit of spice to hopefully get more people interested... maybe a poke that you can hold that superheats the tip the longer you execute it. Have it do nutty pierce damage and maybe even bonus damage to part breaks; you found the weak spot and like a proper gigachad your going to leave your mark in no uncertain terms.

- Lance (and GL) inability to dodge forward is analogous to other weapons being unable to dodge backwards (no, attacks that make you go backwards don't count since no s on those). Yes it does mean that you have to turn your back and back hop into super backhop for mobility or... you can just use the other tools in lance's disposal for mobility. -Honestly the charged wide sweep not being used that much is more an issue of being a really bad input. No other weapon in the game forces you to hold Y AND B to complete it, combined with the fact that it must be done repeatedly makes it tedious to use, despite its very good damage. I have started with world and I started liking Lance when I discovered that unlike most other weapons where my hunting times could hugely vary, Lance's times while on average being a tad bit slower were very consistent, I didn't feel like I was as much of a victim to the monsters shenanigans. I initially skipped on Lance in Sunbreak but thankfully, I loved Malzeno so much that I farmed all of his weapons and fought him with all of his weapons. I discovered the beauty of SB Lance and it's my favorite weapon to use in SB. In GU, outside of guild lance which is whatever, I had fun with every style. Yes striker is the strongest since you can striker charge loop, but there's still fun to be had with other style. I really like going elemental aerial lance and snipe elemental weakpoints. I like how Alchemy Lance works with guard pokes becoming a combo starter, combined with everything that can help you survive, you can wall and I mean WALL a monster. Adept is nice (though I prefer Adept GL for the task of parrying), Valor is kinda fun to play around with certain monsters. I did play Lance in Tri (since it made underwater combat bearable in that game), I played it in 4U where unfortunately it's kinda mediocre until you get Evasion +3. I liked Lance overall, one of my favorite weapons (I still prefer Gunlance though!). It's consistency is very welcome in a game where so many different monster attacks exist.

The biggest reason I dont use the slap is because it doesnt *feel* like a Lance move. Its fine on Gunlance with its cutting bayonet, but I dont want to be smacking monsters with the blunt end of my lance. It actually irks me that its the strongest move.
@852paddy11 ай бұрын
My perfect lance moveset would have: 1. The clutch counter from World but the with blunt damage on impact when you zip at the monster. (imagine the "in your face" knockouts that would be so satisfying) 2. insta block without the weird animation would be crazy good and give us some nice dmg boost for risky counter 3. Shield Charge from Rise. Its such a good gap closer.

I tried lance for the first time in sunbreak out of curiosity cause someone I follow on twitter would always post clips of them playing it. At first I was very "meh" about it, going from the super high dps of dual blades, but then I started actually getting somewhat decent with it and it quickly became " *I AM SO FUCKING STRONG GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH* ". While it'll never replace my beloved that is dual blades and hammer, I will never mind giving it a go ever again.

It's funny how I have a very similar story. Last year, I finally reached mr999 on Sunbreak after a lot of grinding and had nothing else to do (maybe a few special investigations). Decided to make a meme build called stamina god while dressed up as sonic. Chose lance for the dash attack and tried just to run around see how long I lasted (its ridiculous, like a few minutes just running non stop). And as I was just abt to call it a day I decided to go on a few hunts just because. Now, my return to world new save file has abt 500hrs of just lance and I simply cannot stop, its here to stay

I wanna hit the monster. Lance lets me never stop hitting the monster. When the monster hits me, I hit it. When the monster runs away, I hit it while chasing it down. If I didn’t have to worry about sharpness, I literally wouldn’t stop hitting the boss ever.

I too overlooked this weapon for a long time. Recently I fell in love with the parry based gameplay where you clash with the opponent instead of jumping around him like Sekiro, or Lies of P and lance is exactly this and I love It.

I also accidentally became a lance main but now in world. In sunbreak they added shield tackle and shield charge which made the guard. It made the weapon so much more fluid and aggressive and now you can KO the monster pretty reliably with lance just by playing naturally

I've had great fun playing passive lance, too. Gravios set in 4u, kushala lance was how i beat G village Rajang, and recently I've adopted in 3u full Glacial Agnaktor for specifically Lucent Nargacuga. I couldn't make it to the end before with Swaxe, and the stamina pressure is too much without guard skills, but with them? I survive. Evade lance is probably better, but a guard set feels so cosy it's like you're in a little house, brings a huge smile to my face seeing a barrage of strong things just hit my shield and not kill me, just keep shuffling forward to regenerate my stamina.

I friend introduce me to this poke stick and i thought its just kinda normal for me. But then, i kinda need to farm this Zinogre Arena quest and the lance literally counter poke this electric dog punch like 10 times since this good doggo literally won't stop punching you if you keep counter poke it and it's feels SO DAMM GOOD to counter poke this Zinogre for 10+ times in a go

been a lance main since MHFU, what people don’t seem to understand is that you have to be constantly engaged in what the monster is doing and you have to be incredibly proactive to truly pull out the weapon’s potential, also love the st. george comparison, great video!

Honestly a lot of what you said echoes the feeling I have with the lance as well. Being able to no-sell practically everything and dish it right back is a powerful feeling. The only thing I'm said about is that my favorite Lance move, the clutch counter, is exclusive to iceborne. There's just something about the way you whip around on the rope afterwards that makes me feel like a badass fantasy hero, and the wirebug stuff just isn't the same.

Pre-5th gen, the only time I really ever used Lance was 3U for underwater combat but 5th gen really roped me into a lot of weapons I never really used before. I was always just an unga bunga hammer GS player but now I love just about every weapon aside from the bowguns haha

That's one thing I love about monster hunter. Every weapon has something about it to fall in love with. I played most of world maining the hammer which has never been much on my radar since I started playing on psp. On a whim I equiped one and said I'm gonna do the next 10 hunts with this and then started going after every single monster with it because I loved bashing skulls.

Sunbreak did a lot of good things for GL and Lance. Both are at their peak in Sunbreak imo, I love this game. GU is probably my favorite still, and adept styles play a major role in that. Parries and just evade are mechanics that will always activate my monkey neurons.

As one of said 6 lance mains, I was honestly surprised to find it as my main instead of anything else, but the idea was so much fun I had to try it and I never looked back. My favorite part is the fact that, with every other weapon, the hunter is constantly repositioning around the monster, but with the lance it's the other way around.

Imagine my surprise seeing lance was the least used weapon in Rise. That thing eats through Afflicted Monsters like cardboard, it cut all my hunting times by half. I just wish Gunlance was just more like it's cousin, it's melee capabilities need an upgrade

Lance has one forgotten features from pre-gen 5, the piercing damage: if you were to hit a hitzone where 75%blunt value is higher than 100% sharp, you'd have the former rather than the latter. It's crazy how no one talks about that, it really rewarded sticking by the head, and with flinch free not a freebie solidly placed the weapon with the Hammer and HH when team formation.

I think two of my favourite new additions to lance in 5th gen are leaping thrust and forward hop being able to aggressively hop towards the monster without having to do a 180 and back hop 3 times was a game changer.

I love lance because it feels honorable? I don't really have any way to describe it. Like I feel it demands respect because you look at all these different weapons with huge damage, or flashy moves, and you say no to that. You live simply and humbly with only your flashiest moves being the ability to run fast and counter-attack.
@joshlewis886011 ай бұрын
Something you didn’t mention about Sunbreak lance is the offensive repositioning potential of Sheathing Retreat. It’s very common for the monster to jump away from you, and people underestimate how fast you can get back on the monster with lance. Face backwards and use Sheathing Retreat to sheath the lance and throw yourself towards the monster, use a wirebug midair to cover a HUGE distance if need be, then use Shield Charge to land charging into the monster’s face with your shield. It’s my go-to setup, and you can easily cross an entire zone in an instant. Even more satisfying if you get a knock out when you get there.
