I liked Lightning at the time. It felt like a port for the future: fast (at the time), reversible plug, and a secure and tactile fit without the meat hooks USB Micro B had. USB-C just outpaces Lightning at every turn now, aside from the tactile fit which still feels really nice.

Sorry bro. The only reason why Apple was shoving that lightening port down your throat is because they have a patent for it. No one else can sell it unless they fork over a ton of money to Apple. Apple's getting money out of you one way or another.

USB C actually has almost the exact same physical latch as Lightning, only it's inside the connector! Lightning was a weird and strangely long-lived connector. But it ultimately influenced USB C. While it wasn't particularly practical, it was definitely very pretty, with no holes, no sticky out bits in the phone. The plug is a solid piece of metal and the port is just a hole.

Came into this video wanting to know the history of how we went from the 30-pin to USB-C and ended up watching your most critical video about Apple on your channel to date. Plenty of big tech KZbinrs wouldn’t dare to make a video criticizing Apple (unless you’re Linus whose audience aren’t going to buy a Mac or Apple products in the first place). Maybe you could team up with Zackary Smigel regarding Apple & their business practices.

Oh yeah, no one ever criticizes Apple. It’s definitely not a tired trope for tech KZbinrs to rant about apple in any video that features them or their products and mentioning how much better everything else is while they furiously jerk themselves off until they close their eyes and have an explosive 45 second orgasm as images of headphone jacks fill their minds. Afterwards, they get a call from Linus who, after spending 2-3 minutes of him berating his employees and being patronizing in general, congratulated them on the orgasm and mentions that he hasn’t seen ropes that long and thick since unbox therapy bent an iPhone with his bare hands. But yeah, I 100% agree which is why I make sure to always like this exact same type of comment that’s always at or near the top of the comment section under any video that says something negative about Apple.

I love how Apple justified not giving the brick with the 12 iPhone series by saying: ''we all have the bricks we can already use'' And yet, the ONLY people that had fast charging were 11 Pro owners and people that had to buy the brick separately. As an Apple user, I was thrilled about the USB Type-C when I upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro from an iPhone 11. Growing up, I faced so many issues with different ports. I owned a 2G, 3G, and a 4S, while my friends had newer models like the 5 and 6. My family wouldn't let me have a "good phone" in case it got stolen, which I understand. But it was frustrating needing to charge my phone and finding out nobody had the 40-pin connectors. When I got a phone with Lightning, nobody seemed to have one, except my friends who had already moved on to USB Type-C. I remember classes full of students arguing and trying to borrow a USB-C or a Lightning cable. Now that iPhones finally have USB Type-C, I'm excited, but then I realized I don't need to be. I'm not in school anymore; I don't have the constant struggle with friends over who has the right charger. Instead, I have my own charger that I always keep around my house.

You forgot the fact that lightning actually did support usb3 (5Gbit). When the 2017 iPad pro came out it had lightning but it did connect at 5Gbit. This was with a stock lightning cable. It was however the only device that did support 5Gbit over lightning that I know of. The way you could tell hardwarevice was that when you looked into the female lightning connector on the iPad you would see connection strips on both sides of the plug. All other devices had only connection strips on one side.
@kylemsguy_
@kylemsguy_ Жыл бұрын
It was kind of a hack, though. The original spec only used the pins on one side of the cable, and they never released a lightning to USB 3.0 cable (the lightning to USB-C cables were USB 2.0 only). The only way you could connect USB 3.0 stuff to those iPad Pros was via lightning accessories, and they used both sides of the cable. Even so, they also limited the power that they could output from that port, down to 5V 40mA. The USB 3.0 camera adapter had you connect a lightning cable for extra power, which was super annoying. If you had the USB 2.0 adapter you were SOL unless you had a device that happened to work with the low power budget (or used an unpowered USB hub to trick the phone/tablet into giving a bit more power)

My mom was actually very excited when I told my mom about the iphone 15 had usb c. Unfortunately she doesn't buy phones, she usually just get cheap phones from people who give them away when they upgrade, in fact, the newest phone she has ever had was the iphone x (before it was an old iphone, I'm pretty sure it was on ios 12). Personally I'm an android user, but the only phones I've had were the galaxy s7, and the pixel 6a. When I got my 6a, I had to get a churching block as well as an audio adapter because it was the first device that anyone in my family has had that requires a good cord, not a cheap usb c cord, although I have no idea if it was the block or the cord, because I could charge it with my portable battery with my cheap usb c cord, or with my computer.

I will save some time and say Apple changed the port not because USB-C is superior in sturdiness, is compatible with most modern ports today, or because you can have USB 3 and even thunderbolt transfer speeds (which for some reason Apple decided even with these MUCH faster speeds available with the USB-C technology, they would stick with ANCIENT USB 2.0 speeds). Apple changed the port because the EU essentially told them to do it or don't sell your phones in the EU. Changing the port had nothing to do with improving the phone for the end consumer. Lightning is SLOW, tends to break easily, and is proprietary. Apple would still be using an inferior port if they could because they make a lot of money selling proprietary lightning accessories.

@@framedthunder6436 Thats not true USB-3 or compliant with the standard. Lightning is 8 pins, where USB 3 is 9 pins. I think apple learned their lesson from the first port transition. As you mentioned, apple introduced lightning as an entirely new connector that no one had at the time. Their old accessories and chargers wouldn’t work. With usb-c, apple rolled that in with the MacBook Air (2015), which did not make up a major portion of their sales. Manufacturers started making usb c accessories and then the industry followed suit on phones/accessories. Now the pain point is that apple should have transitioned the iPhone port a few years ago, rather than users complaining that they didn’t have usbc cords to use with their phones. Everything new has usb c, so users are integrating with an existing environment.

But on the plus side to this is that the iPhone 15 users will now have a much more easier way of getting Type-C cables. Due to the fact that type-C has been around for at least 6 years now and Android phones are one of the leading devices to use them. So now when you go over to the charging cable section at your local supermarket you don't need to really look hard enough to find the right cable. Even then you might already have some lying around the house since you already have some other USB-C devices. At this point USB-C is now really becoming the default standard and is also slowly replacing the oldest Type-A.

Let's not forget that "the new iPad" (iPad 3rd gen) was the reason the ipad 2 didn't get the fancy blur UI effects because the higher resolution meant "the new iPad" had to process 4 times as many pixels, but the jump in processing power wasn't enough for a good experience, thus they never included the real time effect on both the iPad 2 and "the new iPad" Btw, the first iPad mini has the A5X, just like the iPad 2, but it did come with those effects working perfectly fine. You could also jailbreak your iPad 2 to unofficially activate it and it worked fine too

Not only Apple saved money not putting the power brick but since the box is 2.5 - 3 x smaller they are saving a lot of money with shipments too. That was quite a big thing during pandamics when air and sea freights skyrocketed. I were in the business back then, prices were 5 - 6 x higher than before.

The iPhone 15 has absolutely infuriated me because Apple has milked the lightning port for far too long and now it’s gone too far and now they segregated the iPhone from one another even more by having the 5 times telephoto to the promax and *only* the pro max. There’s no reason for them to do this other than to push the more expensive phone on the consumer.

For the people who complain about Apple "changing the connector again" so are you saying nothing should ever change? What is an acceptable time frame for a company to change things up? If Apple did not have to change to USB C should they keep the lightning port until 2050?

@Sacto1654
@Sacto1654 Жыл бұрын
But yet, Apple was actually smart to produce the Lightning connector, since it was *WAY* more durable than the original 30-pin connector. Apple originally went with USB Type C on their MacBooks and iPad Pros due to the need for higher-speed I/O connectivity; it's only the EU regulation that the iPhone now uses the USB Type C port. By the way, expect the iPhone to be '"thicker" possibly as early as the iPhone 16. Reason: the new EU requirement for easily replaceable battery packs on portable devices, which will require Apple to make the iPhone (and all iPads and MacBook laptops) to be thicker to accommodate the ability to easily swap battery packs like the old Samsung Galaxy SIII and S4 cellphone models.
@aarkansinghal6633
@aarkansinghal6633 Жыл бұрын
dang looks like the EU is really cracking down on Apple if thats' the case. Apple has made it a goal to make their smartphones thinner in the past. So if this is the new rule, then yeah Apple is a little down on their luck.

@absolutium
@absolutium Жыл бұрын
@@robmalcolm8042 Here is the trick.. the UsbC port is strictly designed to put wear on the male conector yet that part of the cable is 8 times more durable than it's predecessor. A lightning port wears both parts of the connector needlessly since the male connector is attached to a weaker cable regardless of the brand due to the low data transmission rates limited by the 8 pins on said connector against the 12(+12) within a modern USBc

I'd argue that changing the port to USB C is a bigger issue for most people than removing the charging brick. People often stick to what they like and what they're used to, and an iPhone user would've had to have gone 8 years without purchasing an iPhone in order to not have a cable they could use with their new phone. 2016 was when the iPhone 4S stopped receiving new software features, most apps stopping support for it in the next year or two perhaps. Changing to USB C would be a bigger inconvenience because it's not likely something that someone would have already from a previous purchase. Though I'd also find it hard to believe that someone doesn't have a single device in their possession from the previous couple years that recharges with USB C. I'm likely biased because my first two Apple devices were the iPod Touch 4th and 5th gen, neither of which came with a charging brick, and it's just a "use your computer's USB port for charging" or "get your own brick"

They should have just added a lightning to usb-c adapter in the box, most transitions from one port/cable to another would have been a lot smoother if companies did this during the transition period
@00SNIVY00
@00SNIVY00 10 ай бұрын
@@memelord705 While that would be nice, the thing going against that argument is how universal USB C is among other products. Contrast that with Lightning being a completely new type of connector that no other device would have.
