Henry was not betrothed to Catherine as a child. She was betrothed to and married to his brother Arthur who died not long after they married. Henry only married her after his father died because Henry VII was essentially keeping her in England as a bargaining chip with the King of Spain. He chose to marry her.
@paulhan16156 жыл бұрын
Also, Henry did love her from the start of their marriage. He used to fancy himself as a knight who rescued a lonely princess, Catherine and taking her as his wife. You know, like all the medieval knight's cliches. It was only few years later, he started seeing other women to replace her, after she's constantly failed to bear a masculine son and "allegedly" got tired of her because of it. Catherine begged bitterly to him not to discard her and her daughter Mary, yet Henry was cruel as he could be. Her last words to her ex-husband were, as I recall, something like, "I forgive you for all the deeds that you've done to me and my daughter. Please do not forget our child, Mary. For the last time, I desperately want to see you". He's a complete moron to divorce a wife who was this loving and faithful as she.
@JungV6 жыл бұрын
In point of fact, he was betrothed to her after Arthur died, so the video is technically correct. When Ferdinand failed to pay up on the dowry (or... very complicated... replace the plate Katherine was forced to spend etc etc), Henry VII repudiated the betrothal, which Henry VIII made good on when his father died. Agree with you on the point at large though -- the video discards so much nuance that it may as well be inaccurate in many places.
@anthonylarranaga51616 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but the reason (at least the given reason) that the Pope didn't grant him an annulment for that marriage was because he had already given him a papal dispensation to get married in the first place, since marrying your brother's widow was against the Bible and Church rules. Granted, there was probably political considerations on the Pope's part, but it's not like he was just being a stuck up old fart.

@@anthonylarranaga5161 the Pope also got kidnapped by the Roman Emperor at the time, who was Catherine's uncle (if I recall). Alright here’s a few misconceptions I need to correct: 1.) Henry didn’t marry Catherine purely for the alliance, in the first few years of the marriage they were in love 2.) His later objections to the marriage weren’t solely based on lack of a male heir, but also on the fact that she had been married, very shortly, to Henry’s older brother and that’s a no-no. 3.) He never asked for a divorce, he asked for an annulment. A divorce is the dissolution of a legitimate marriage, and annulment is the acknowledgment of a marriage never having been legitimate 4.) Also the Papacy didn’t refuse to annul the marriage out of some respect for the institution or being morally tied, but because they were bribed and threatened by the Holy Roman Emperor, an enemy of Henry’s

Misconceptions abound! Firstly, Charles V was not an enemy of Henry VIII - they were allied against the French between 1522 to 1525 when Charles’ power became total following the battle of Pavia. It was only after Charles refused to help Henry become king of France that their relationship broke down. The imperial sack of Rome in 1527 made a papal annulment impossible as Charles’ troops had effectively made Pope Clement their prisoner. The fact that Henry married Catherine in 1509 does suggest that he loved her as her father, Ferdinand of Aragon, had refused to arrange the marriage between the young couple when Henry VII was still alive. Henry had to sacrifice a lot of money to marry Catherine and it was the longest of all his six marriages.

You failed to mention the reason that Henry's behaviours may appear so contradictory in hindsight. Shortly after he married Anne Boleyn, he was injured in a jousting accident. He was unconscious for 2 hours and his doctors didn't know if he would wake up. His personality changed drastically after the accident and some modern historians believe that his descent into tyranny during his later years may have been caused by a brain injury.

He is still human and a King(the worst combination) Humans makes mistakes, Kings amplify it. Nobiles back then and even now wants popularity and a good legacy to be remembered. 2. In Machiavelli's Prince, cruelty and violence is sometimes necessary to keep order and to preserve the well being of the state. Considering how Henry's father won the crown by conquest you dont see why he had to be tough as many nobles in his time have a stronger claim to the throne than him. 3. Interesting that this was made, I just recently watched a documentary called "Inside the Body of King Henry VIII," where modern doctors examine his medical records and all that was physically wrong with him. I was shocked to hear that quite a few of his physical ailments seemed to contribute to his poor choices, even his most ruthless, unforgivable acts. The narrator even went so far as to call him England's Joseph Stalin! D: I can see a lot of points for and against him, and I think the ending summed him up pretty well, a ruler who embodied all the contradictions a ruler could have. Couldn't have said it better myself! He may have done a lot to contribute to the progression of his country, and ultimately a lot of the rest of the world, but he did it through some of the worst means possible. So ultimately, no, I still don't like him. I was interested to hear, though, that a few of his athletic sports he participated in contributed to his mental illnesses, because I believe that he was mentally ill, beyond a shadow of a doubt. More specifically, the symptoms of said injuries, particularly his jousting tournaments, included violent mood swings, resulting in his killing many people who were supposed to be close to him, and turning him into a tyrant. The documentary concluded with discussing his diet, that he basically became a comfort eater, and what his final years were like, dying alone and friendless as a clinically obese, 400-pound man. As much as I don't like this guy, I couldn't help but feel pity for him when I heard that. Not only was he a product of his terrible environment, he also suffered from many physical injuries and mental illnesses that just made everything worse for him. Especially dying alone and friendless, it's not surprising, given his terrible choices during his life, but to die like that, sounds like he was really hurting. No wonder he's described as a ruler with all of a ruler's contradictions! This said, however, this begs the question, without all those injuries and mental illnesses, what would he be like if he were an actually sane person? How much better of a ruler could he possibly have been? I guess in this life, we'll never know. Anyway, as always, good videos, thank you for the insightful case, full of very organized research! Henry VIII is definitely worthy of a mock trial like this, very interesting. :D

AishaVonFossen I watched that same documentary when I was a kid and was a little obsessed with the Tudors and just British royalty in general. I personally don’t have much pity for him I don’t like feeling bad for people who weren’t very good in life nor do I like people trying to change my mind about those kinds of people (I’m not accusing you of doing that I’m just saying.) I do agree that Henry did some good in his life for his kingdom and country but I feel like the good kind of gets covered by the bad and I think that’s because I think the bad is too serious to forget or impossible to try and overturn with the positive which is why some people might actually call him a tyrant for those bad things that he’s done. He probably could’ve been a good king without all those issues he suffered from and if he was I probably would like him a bit more but not a lot because to be honest I don’t like his family dynasty. Btw are those actual 🐺?

Yes! Finally another episode of this series, I really like this episode of the History on trial series. I think this one is the best for some reasons 1.- It actually felt like a trial when "Objection" was said, kind of a reminder that this is a court. 2.- Both the defense and the prosecutor pulled out their sword and they ain't giving up, seriously one says something and the other interrupts immediately and the other does so back and it's amazing to watch them both duel perse. 3.- The animation is superb.

0:45 Not true. Henry married Katherine of Aragon because he wanted to. His brother's marriage to Katherine cemented the diplomatic alliance. The alliance faltered when Prince Arthur died. Katherine was essentially held hostage in England until Spain paid the second half of her dowry. When Henry VII died, the younger Henry could've done whatever he wanted marriage-wise. He married Katherine probably because 1) she was beautiful 2) he was enamored with her from his youth when he danced with her at his brother's wedding and 3) ever the narcissist, Henry couldn't stand to let his brother have what he couldn't have.

It's really difficult for anyone to justify any of Henry's religious policies. He banned his people from attending mass, yet attended one himself daily for the rest of his life. He even had catholic last rites read to him on his death bed. Henry was, and always was, a Catholic: as Cromwell states in the Tudors, _"except for this one doctrine: that he would have neither Pope, nor Luther, nor any other man set above him."_

There's several reasons that Pope Clement VII won't grant Henry VIII's requested annulment. 1 - Rome was being sacked and held by the forces of the Holy Roman Emperor, Karl V, who was also King Carlos I of Spain, and Catherine of Aragon is his favorite Aunt. Charles would not tolerate a total break of the Anglo-Spanish alliance and the humiliation of his aunt. 2 - Doing so would contradict the very spiritual authority of the Pope, since such an annulment would contradict a special compensation granted by a previous pope to allow Henry to marry Catherine, who was already married and widowed by the death of Henry's older brother, Prince Arthur Tudor.

Another important thing to note is that he was an avid jouster as a young man, but sustained a terrible injury and blow to his head that may have physically affected the behavioural part of the brain. It was said that after that injury his manner, temperament and personality seemed to change dramatically. Going from a more fun loving, aristocratic party boy, not particularly bothered in political matters, to a much more politically focused, harsh and maybe bitter king due to his constant pain or possible mental damage. Anne Bolyn's confession to adultery can also be disputed. Henry also brought in a trained executioner from France-I think it was-, to ensure that her head would be removed as quickly and efficiently as possible, as appose to the sword hacking that occurred from his regular English executioners (which I'm not entirely sure were officially regarded as such) which was much more painful and awful, which may be proposed as a small kindness or at least some care for her fate in the end.

History vs. Ferdinand Marcos Marcos is considered both the best and worst president in the Philippine history and possibly the Southeast Asia. He is very famous as the leader who industrialized Philippines and improving its economy drastically that Philippines was considered one of the richest country around the globe. And he is also infamous for the Martial Law that ended up a violent revolt to overthrow Marcos. He served more than 20 years as president, 5 times a normal term for presidency.

While I agreed that the closure of hospitals and destruction of libraries was awful, something to remember about Henry being denied an annulment was that the Spanish had sacked Rome and taken control of the Church, even holding the Pope for ransom. Why? because Spain couldn't pay their own army. The Pope had been fairly liberal with royal annulments before, but of course when Anne Boleyn's father had a sword to his throat he was a lot more reluctant.

When I first heard about Henry VIII, I was led to believe that he was little more than a bloodthirsty tyrant who beheaded two of his own wives. He definitely could be cruel and tyrannical at times, but, in the early years of his life, he was known to have been a likable and popular man. After he suffered a jousting wound though, he lived in a constant state of agony which made him become cruel, short tempered and vicious. He could be ruthless before that, but his injury turned him into a monster.

In a modern discussion, does "maintaining stability" really equate to "producing a male heir?" I mean, a modern adjudicator would almost always rule in favor of the accuser, rather than the defendant. That's usually the case for their "History vs." series, however, this one is especially skewed. I can't recall a single plus from the defendant's side.
