They did the Woldo in another episode- you can clearly see the difference between the heavy, powerful woldo and the light and agile naginata. I suspect with the lack of good steel in Japan in the early middle ages there was less armor so the weight wasn't' as crucial.

Quenching is really easy to test if it happened correctly. Just using a file and seeing if it glides along without biting in. The most important part is the tempering. Which is almost never shown. The way you are tempering the blade changes it's characteristics to bendable or brakeable or right in between. Which is the most preferable.

Well, for pole weapons in particular, the far longer lever of the haft generates greater tip velocity, and thus more force in the strike. It requires a very good working knowledge of wood grain structure, as well as proper attachment to the steel portion. It's why reproduction polearms are so hard to come by, most fail in tests like this.

@CyrusKazan
@CyrusKazan 3 жыл бұрын
Japanese blades generally aren't spring-tempered, they're differentially hardened. Meaning that while the edge will be harder and can take a very fine edge, as well as retain it, the soft spine can bend and take a set. Novices often bend katana blades when first attempting tatami cutting for this reason.
