As a Dog Soldier or "Hotametananeo" (Means DogMan) the first story is wrong about our name and weapon, the Crooked Lance Warriors are the warriors from our Elk Horn Scraper society, the Crooked Lance is their weapon. Each society had a different weapon, us DogSoldiers use long 6-7 foot long straight lances.

Thank you ! This reminds me a great deal about the Musket Wars here in New Zealand between the different Iwi (tribes) from the 1800 to 1842. It wasn't like the USA and Canada, here in New Zealand the victor normally ate their victims, some were lucky or unlucky to be slaves! Maori killed each other to such an extent that the number killed in these tribal wars was the same as what New Zealand lost in WW1 and WW2 combined! This why the Treaty of Waitangi saved Māori from exterminating each other by all the Tribes giving Sovereignty to the Crown.

Great content too tho, that's the real reason I'm commenting. How fascinating! Crazy how Mr. Smith, at a ripe old age of 32, was one of only two fatalities on a supposedly safe trip. Seems to me the poor guy was just trying to wrap up the final item on his bucket list before kicking back for a nice retirement during which he could enjoy the fruits of all his hard work. Fascinating.

We are proud to be Indians, and refer to ourselves as such. My older brother was raised by our dad. I was raised by our mom. Back in 1990, my brother told me we're Scottish and Blackfoot on my dad's side. I didn't really believe either because my mom is Norwegian and German. I've had my DNA tested and done tons of research. I did have countless ancestors within the last 50 to 200 years who lived in (modern day) Montana, Dakotas, Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. My DNA is Scottish 20%, Norwegian 16%, German 15%, Irish 15%, English 12%, Sweedish/Danish 12%, Welsh 5%, French 3%, Native American 2%, Finnish ~>1% It's not impossible for me to have a recent Blackfoot ancestor. 1:13:45 This story hit a bit too close to home for me. Within the last 2-4 generations, I have 2 lines of ancestors with the surname Williams, one with the mane Young, one Maxwell, the latter being my mom's grandma's maiden name.

I heard a story once about some soldiers getting overran by natives during the American and indian wars and most of the soldiers were crying and begging for their life (i believe the commanding officer even shot himself so he didnt have to deal with it and left his men to fend for themselves). Well there was one that fought with his gun until he was out of bullets, then used his rifle to hit until it broke, then he fought with his fists, feet, and even a trumpet hed found on the ground. The indians killed him finally, but respected his bravery so much that they wrapped his body in buffalo robes and his was the only body they didnt desecrate. They wrapped him with all of the things he used as weapons and arranged his body respectfully. They mutilated all the others. They respected him because he was a warrior. Just a young kid as scared as everyone else, but fought anyways right to the end. I forget the name of the battle, but i wish i could find out more about it. Its an incredible story.

While important to recognize and understand the horrors committed by the Europeans and Americans to the natives it also very important to understand that it went both ways and I was not that Europeans were barbaric or the Americans were barbaric or that the natives of the many tribe were barbaric. They were all people and they were all barbaric and they all did horrible things to each other but they also did great things to each other while some may be small in comparison they still happened. What is best to do is learn from the history going forward learn the of men who fought and died whether for right or wrong cause. We should leave the past where it is but not leave it behind because all the men, women, and children involved in the conflicts and wars whether within native on native wars or native on European they are all dead and there is nothing you can do in todays world that will fix what has happened because it has already happened.
