Edward II was King of England for 20 years from 1307-1327.
He's the sixth of 14 Plantagenet Kings who ruled England between 1154 and 1485.
He’s best known for being overthrown by his wife and her lover Roger Mortimer.
It’s most likely this happened because of his close (possibly gay) relations with a courtier called Piers Gaveston and, later, a nobleman called Hugh Dispenser.
He’s also known for his disastrous rule, which saw English forces thrashed by the Scots at the Battle of Bannockburn.
Edward II is the sixth of the Plantagenet Kings, shown here.
He’s here in our timeline, ruling around 700 years ago.
Edward was born in 1284, 12 years into his father Edward I’s reign as King.
His father had already crushed the Welsh at that point and had also committed himself to gaining control over Scotland.
To achieve this he tried and failed to marry the six year old Prince Edward to seven year old Margaret, the daughter of the King of Norway who was, believe it or not, the sole heir to the Scottish throne.
Though the plan fell apart when Margaret died on her way to Scotland, the king d placed his own man John Balliol on the Scottish throne anyway.
The Scots didn’t like that, so they revolted and their leader William Wallace was captured and executed by the English.
But the revolt continued under Robert the Bruce and in 1307 King Edward was forced to march north to suppress the revolt. On his way there … he died.
Suddenly, the 23-year-old prince was King Edward II.

Imagine if Margaret of Norway had not died and the union of her and Ed II produced an heir... England, Scotland, and Norway would have been combined and would have been a superpower. The entire course of human history altered by the death of a seven-year-old girl. I love butterfly effect stuff like that.

Great summary. By the way, if you go to a Scotland rugby game and hear the people sing "and sent him homeward to think again" they're singing about Edward II fleeing the Battle of Bannockburn.

*Margaret, Maid of Norway was the grandniece of Edward I- daughter of his niece. Margaret's Mom was actually the 1st cousin of Edward II. Also, the Earl of Lancaster- cousin of Edward II- was Queen Isabella's maternal uncle as he was the younger brother of her Mom, Queen Joan of Navarre & France.

I love the animation style, so cute! (Hugh is too cute to my liking haha) Edward giving Gaveston Isabella’s jewelry is a Victorian era fiction. There’s no evidence that Isabella disliked Gaveston. She even helped him while he was exiled. She was strongly against Hugh Despenser because he was hostile to her and made Edward treat her badly. Before Despenser became a favorite, Edward and Isabella seemed to have loving relationship. Isabella’s campaign was primarily against Hugh; she tried to reconcile with Edward after her invasion, but he refused.

In fact, historical figures are so much more than a general character profile and a list of accomplishments. As GeometricMason has it, "the butterfly effect." Ever try to catch a butterfly? Yet I totally respect historians for their research and revelations.

These mini history lessons are fun, but the cartoon depictions of Piers and Hugh are more than a little homophobic. Piers had distinguished himself in battle as a young man. It is highly unlikely he was a prancing pansy.
