You also omitted BR's safety strategy of the time, by deliberately avoiding inconveniences of having their stations and trains polluted by passengers by completely avoiding their needs and wishes. As we see here, as a result of this employee and management policy known as "not giving a shit about anybody or anything" not only was the accident caused but also no casualties were caused.

@@ZeldaTheSwordsman No it was in the period of "fudge" between Beaching being abandoned as it was politically unpopular, but at the same time it being politically impossible to do anything else, due to an economic crisis and few seeing the railways as a priority. As a result BR was one of managed decline where everything continued as is until it became impossible for it to continue and then whichever broken bit was closed. Whilst under the Thatcher Government (from 1979) life for BR was hard, at least they had certainty, in that they they needed to do what was necessary to minimise the subsidy. So during this time, whilst BR was still of continued decline, it did become very efficient and so cost the Government virtually nothing. The we had the Major Government and they decided to privatise what was left of BR. This seemed like a good idea, because many bits like the InterCity routes had become profitable and so would attract private investment. The problem was that they were privatising a museum of Victorian infrastructure wrapped up in a badly implemented modernisation and then rationalislation plan.

I work for CSX , about 6 months after this incident I had this locomotive as my lead locomotive on my train from Buffalo , N.Y. to Cleveland, Ohio. In that period people wrote with a Sharpe inside the cab of CSX 8888 a short poem about the crazy 8888's adventure and others Odes to the Great Crazy 8888 journey !!!!! Lol railroaders are like little out of control children.

One more thing about that GG1, it also got to attend a presidential inauguration. They didn't have time to pull the wreck out of the station before the incoming president (Eisenhower IIRC) was scheduled to arrive, so they just put in a false floor above the wreck and had the arrival ceremony take place with the locomotive still in the basement.

I've herd that 4876 had more adventures after the wreck in Washington. She was rebuilt at the Altoona shops and was wired wrong and never worked correctly again.

4876 had to be cut into two pieces for removal from the station basement. Repairs to the station had to be made quickly-the accident happened four days before the inauguration of Dwight D. Eisenhower, which was already bringing throngs of people into Washington DC.

They built a temporary floor in the meantime. She was also cut up into more pieces than commonly thought, based on some documents.

I don't know about "never worked correctly again", considering she lasted all the way into Conrail and beyond after her reconstruction. You'd think if she never worked correctly again, she'd have been one of those that got scrapped instead of lasting through into New Jersey Transit and ending up at the B&O Railroad Museum.

As I recall, the Pennsylvania Railroad had a "GG 1/2" as a shop locomotive somewhere in electrified territory (Altoona?) that was literally one half of a GG1! (The other half was destroyed in an accident). It's possible that the 4876 was cut into more pieces, but it would have been pretty easy to cut her into two based on the design 😉

We had a runaway loco about 3 years ago. It was a brand new Vectron that recently got acquired by a small private rail shipping co. On that day the loco was left on a siding at the northern side of the capital's largest freight station, waiting "cold" for its next work (and next driver), that ment to be scheduled a few hours later that day. It was one of those sidings that had direct access to the main line(s) with only a 1 signal and 2 points "protecting" them from "unwanted" approach. After about 20 min the previous driver locked its doors and left, the loco started moving south, down the line. The points were already set to the next passing train leaving the line without the protection of the 2nd switch, that could stop the loco (directly) to get on it. The route was set to line No.150 witch is (was; closed this March for a ("planed...") 3 year, complete reconstruction) a 1 track main line going south. The line is almost a continues "downhill" for the next 30km, starting with a steep 90° degree turn (the next station sometimes has to use its switcher as a banker loco for the heaviest trains going north), so the loco was already going about 25km/h when it reached the next station. The station was alerted in time, and its attendant (who is a true retard as a man, but perfect as a railway worker...) set out the the emergency brake-shoues on the track; - as its regulation -. But on the Vectron the pre-fitted plows are siting very low, witch pushed the brake-shoes off the tracks. Luckily it is a unusually long station for its size, so the attendant had time to get back to the control-table and set the switches to a "dead end" (the never finished 2nd track). So the story ended with a smashed buffer, a fallen signal (that blocked the line, +was the 1st entry signal of the station) 3 hours of delays on that line, and a damaged + derailed loco that was only 3 days old. Turned out the loco's onboard computer had a software issue, that released the brakes after a specific "shut down" procedure, and the investigators could even recreate it on the company's other Vectron too. iho.hu/img/110703_szabadkikoto/P9170158.jpg

If you ever make a part 2 of this video, you need to mention the incident at the suburban rail Saltsjöbanan in Stockholm. For some reason a train standing in a depot for maintenance took off when a cleaning woman did her job and she was not able to bring the train to a halt. When the train reached the end of the line in Saltsjöbaden, it slammed the barrier with about 80 km/h and continued into the basement of a house. Fortunately people was sleeping upstairs! As far as I know nobody was seriously hurt but the material damage was huge.

They're one of the most reliable electro-locos in the US. A readiness and safety record that is pretty much unmatched. There was only _one_ incident where a design fault combined with unusual weather conditions (the snow that year was _especially_ fine) caused them to have major problems.

@@stephengorin2685 Loewy "just" handled the æsthetics. The rest of the design was handled by General Electric. Most used GE electrical components with some using Westinghouse equipment. PCBs, which are now known to be highly carcinogenic, were used extensively as insulators and coolants in electrical applications because of their low flammability and high dielectric constant.

The train on the belgain runaway incident was an NMBS AM80 build by Alstom in the 1980's like you explained. How do i know this? The number on the AM and MS series is the year when pruduction begun like the MS08 in 2008, AM75 in 1975 and so forth. Sadly the AM80 is still in service with no sign of retirement. why? no idea, but it sucks a lot and its not like they can't get money because its a goverment run company just like Amtrak. How do i know this stuff? because i am Belgain myself, makes sense huh.

Those classic NMBS MS electric trains as seen in this video just refuse to dy! It could propably be the longest build and still in service EMU type in the world!(1939-1979) The AM series also has a regular service from Luik to Maastricht. They are very sturdy build equipment but sadly as comfortable as a old fashion horsedrawn farmers hay cart for passengers Sometimes we get lucky and get a "duikbril" (diversgoggle) or recently the modern Stadler Flirt "3 landen trein"( 3 countries train) B,D,NL EMU As mixed nationality Dutch/Belgian i visit oft family by train into the 3 YES THREE language zones (Dutch, French, German ) in Belgium were my family lives.

One additional note,on the Federal wreck! The trip from Boston to New York[Penn Station],was on the,then New Haven,and the engines were changed at Penn! This was,well before the Penn Central,and GG-1'S never worked past Sunnyside Yard! The New Haven engine,is not noted in the record,but they also had 2-C+C-2,engines,which were the mothers of the GG-1'S! Guess who the fathers were?? The Chieftain, tank guy, talks in one segment about when combat tanks are displayed in public in buildings there's an argument because the military personnel bring in fuel and completely fill the fuel tanks. This is because if the engine is not running these tanks have no ventilation of the fuel system and having moved a tank into position there is a LOT of heat that perfuses throughout the interior of the engineering body (the crew areas insulated) and can heat the fuel tanks and cause vapor buildup... which can detonate... just like Flight 800. So yes, shooting at the fuel tanks on a locomotive is absofukintotalutely stupid. Also there's no real need to save weight on locomotives, those fuel tanks aren't balloons... *minimum* standard is 5/16ths inch for sides and baffles of 12.5 ton per inch yield alloy steel. Not "bullet proof" per se, but very very bullet resistant. Shotgun is gonna go "ping" and give up. Catching Krazey8's is probably the only time in the last 50 years an engineer has been able to directly open up the full 2.2MW of whup-ass an SD40-2 can provide. These days if you even enter notch 7 without express written permission countersigned by the dick-prints of 11 executives in acid etched polished granite under precise circumstances and locations you get fired before you can call it in as an accident.

There was even one of these on the Islandline (the bit of the BR network on the Isle of Wight) I have managed to find the following description which while not mine describes what I remember about it quite well: "The incident occurred on 12 January 1991 and involved a train of 1938 tube stock resting at Shanklin station on the Isle of Wight. There is no record of why the train left Shanklin of its own accord. Was it faulty brakes, or rather that these had been too lightly applied? Anyway the gradient out of Shanklin station is sufficiently steep enough to make a train move of its own accord if its not sufficiently braked. What happened next is almost totally a fluke and it was fortunate no major disaster occurred. The line has a near continuous gradient falling all the way to Morton Common between Sandown and Brading, a distance of approximately two and half miles. Fortunately by the time the train reached the bridge over the main road at Lake Hill - a couple of passengers managed to force the cab door open and one applied the emergency handbrake. The runaway train was finally brought to a stop at the top of Los Altos park. This was very fortunate indeed. The train had freewheeled for just over a mile and a half. It could have been worse had it continued straight through Sandown station before derailing at the exit points. If that had not happened it could have easily continued towards a head on collision with a southbound service on the next single track section. There seems to be absolutely no record of any public inquiry to investigate why the train managed to take off in this way. It seemed a serious enough incident to warrant an inquiry, yet the incident received scant attention. There’s nothing in the national news. The local island news archives have nothing as those in the British Library were checked. It was just a couple of railway magazines who wrote up reports on the incident." A couple of points to pick up on. Yes there were passengers on board at the time, but no driver! Shanklin is the terminus of the southern end of the line so he had set the brakes and got out for a quick rest stop before taking the train back northbound. While he was doing whatever the passengers for the return trip started loading, this is still the common practice on the Islandline. From other reports it seems as though while he had set the brakes there was possibly an air leak on the system. this coupled with the gradient mentioned allowed the train to slip the brakes and go off on its own. The final point is that this is mostly a single track line with a passing place at Sandown. There are normally two trains operating and passing there meaning the runaway could easily have met her sister coming the other way had she got past Sandown.

Look up the runaway rail grinder incident on the London Underground a few years ago. There were two accidents, one by Transport for London and one by the RAIB I think. They were amongst the most shocking accident reports that I have ever read.

You would have thought train crews would learn from the Chester accident but just a few years ago there was an incident with the Caledonian Sleeper train, with a very similar cause; the brake continuity test had been performed out of turn, so a closed brake c*ck went undetected before the train left Carstairs. Nothing more than blind luck prevented a crash, with the train being brought to a halt two-fifths of a mile beyond its intended stop in Edinburgh.

That just would have stopped the engine. The inertia and downhill slope meant the train would keep going regardless. If anything it would have been worse because the brake pressure would drop without the engine on.

You should read up on the CIE Push-Pull runaway of 1975. A Max Senate story but with tragic results; two passengers died on a train going the other way but stopped in Gormanstown station.

Unions, yes. Many fought to keep firemen's jobs. On a GG1 they were mostly an extra set of eyes for the engineer, which is better for safety at least.
