The siege of Buda in 1686 was fought between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire, ending almost 150 years of Turkish rule. Although Eugene played a minor role in the siege, it was during these early encounters of the Long Turkish War that he made a name for himself and rose through the ranks.

@jaffer raza First of all Prince Eugene was not in charge of this campaign, the siege of Buda might have been a Phyrric victory but at The Battle of Petrovaradin he crushed the Ottomans up to 100, 000 lost their lives. He did this with about 80,000 troops against the 160,000 Ottoman forces. So you trying to undermine Prince Eugene’s battlefield accomplishment is just a futile endeavor to salvage your wounded pride because you’re obviously an Ottoman fan boy. Whether you like it or not the facts are the facts so just stop being so salty about it and recognize the tremendous ability of Prince Eugene. Can’t wait to hear your next excuse.

An interesting fact of this siege is the participation of the Spanish troops of Charles II of Spain (Spanish Habsburgs), who despite not participating directly with the Kingdom and not being mentioned because it is spoken of in a general way, sent several regiments of volunteers (approximately 12,000 men) to the fight under the command of Manuel Lopez de Zuñiga, Duke of Béjar, who died on the spot, although his troops played such an important role during the reconquest of the city that a memorial can now be seen in the section of the wall that was captured by 100 or 300 of these volunteers. Also a correction that I wanted to make is that the Territory of Belgium is not marked on the Map as part of the Hispanic Monarchy, which remained as part of the kingdom until the War of Spanish Succession. On the other hand, since you are talking about the second half of the 17th century, I would like you to comment on a battle from the "Franco-Dutch war" that occurred between 1672 and 1678, perhaps the Battle of Saint-Denis, as it was a battle in which a great coalition of nations tried to stop the spectacular war machine of Louis XIV, it was indecisive, but it is an interesting confrontation that would serve as an example to show the difficulty that existed when facing the French army and why characters like Eugene of Savoy stood out both after successfully facing them.
@wolfgangkranek3762 жыл бұрын
Spaniards also helped to defend Vienna at the first Ottoman siege in 1529. Luis de Ávalos maistre de Campo, Juan de Salinas, Jaime García de Guzmán, Jorge Manrique, Cristóbal de Aranda, Melchior de Villarnell and Jan de Agnilera. They commanded a group of 700 to 800 Spanish soldiers of which only about 250 survived. They were sent as support by María de Hungría (nacida como María de Habsburgo o bien María de Austria).

It was unfortunate for the Ottomans since they basically ran out of god-tier Köprülü Grand Viziers. If there was a great Köprülü to oppose Eugene, This war would have turned out less disasterous and much more bloody. This period is one of Ottoman Commanders and their incompetence. It is a century after Mezo-Keresztes and Kanije, but a century before Acre and almost 2 centuries before Plevne. The good Köprülüs were dead, and until Murad IV no Sultan could actually "rule" the country same way Suleiman or Mehmed or Selim did. This is just the "Era of Ottoman Retards". There were still Köprülüs and great commanders, but there were no more Gods on the battlefield, much like the "Century of Humiliation" in China.

There is an insgnificant inaccuracy: the video swapped the northern and southern locations. Actually the palace complex was (and still is) on the southern third of the Buda old town, and the "town" itself with its streets and houses are in northern part. So the last pasha of Buda more likely fell in the north. His symbolic grave can also be found on the northern wall, at he Anjou bastion. Right now I am writing these sentences in my home in the Pasarét neighborhood of Buda, and "Pasarét" literally means "Pasha's Meadows" and it was named in the honor of the last pasha of Buda :)

Wow, what an epic siege. I have never studied the war in such detail. My ancestors and the Habsburg coalition fought many epic battles in Europe over the centuries. Also, speaking of Eugene, it is impossible not to mention the Battle of Salankamen, which will take place 5 years after this war. And there is an important point in this war that many overlook. In the Battle of Salankamen, just as the Ottomans were about to defeat the Habsburgs and destroy Eugene's charisma, Grand Vizier Köprülü Fazıl Mustafa Pasha, who commanded the Ottoman army, was shot in the head and died instantly on the battlefield. Seeing this, the morale of the Ottoman army deteriorated and the army began to disintegrate. At this point luck was on Eugene's side. History is full of such breaking moments.

Finally, by gathering 50,000 men, he could barely defeat the Topal Osman's 10,000 soldiers.[3] Nader is a joke, the Topal Osman always crushed his and Nader would never be able to beat his unless 5x bigger more than his. Topal Osman beat his when he was 70 and sick LOOOOL. Some children compare Napoleon to Nader Shah but only the Battle of Austerlitz>Nader Shah. Napoleon always fought great armies and empires but Nader Shah could never defeat the Ottoman Empire's army of more than 50,000 men. He managed to defeat only small armies with 4-5 times more soldiers. Only once he faced equal armies and more than 50,000 armies, he nearly died and he fled the battle LOOL. Napoleon destroyed an empire with the Battle of Austerlitz, while Nader Shah was looking for a hole to escape in the face of large armies LOOOOL. Even in the Battle of Karnal, which is considered his brightest victory, he hisself was 160,000 and the Babur army was 80,000[4][5][6] He never mattered to large empires. The Ottoman Empire crushed Nader Shah as he fought both the Habsburgs and Russia at the same time. Nader is a joke for Napoleon.Napoleon>10x Nader Shah.

You know, imagine that Louis XIV did NOT turn Eugene away. War of Spanish Succession could have looked very differently, being an epic struggle between Eugene on one and John Churchill on another side.

@Le Austrian painter Unfortunately I did and I don't see your point. Ottoman empire is Turkish because its dynasty is of Turkish origin. That is simple as that. Bayezid claimed his legitimacy came from Oghuz Khan.
