This forced the Habsburgs to spend large amounts of money and time to build up a new defensive line against the Ottomans. Another advantage occurred with the influx of large numbers of western mercenaries, who introduced new weapon systems, tactics, and techniques into the Ottoman military. The Ottoman military benefited greatly from these new innovations, thanks to its receptivity and pragmatism. For the first time in Ottoman history, the government enlisted groups of mercenaries who had deserted from the Habsburg camp. The most well-known example involved the desertion of a French mercenary unit in the Papa fortress to the Ottoman side on August 1600. Afterwards, they served on various campaigns during the Long War, and some of them continued to serve well after the end of war. Even though this was extraordinary and not representative of a generalized trend, it demonstrates that the Ottoman government of the seventeenth century was far from being the reactionary and conservative organ that is still a commonly held conviction about its identity today." -- read the entire article here: weaponsandwarfare.com/2020/05/03/battle-of-keresztes-1596/

That battle wasn’t a defeat by the Christians alone. The Ottomans disengaged as well and the battle was not for nothing. The Christian army despite their withdrawal accomplished their goal which was dislodging their enemies from the fortified town. You may sound British, but you’re definitely a pro-Muslim person based on your biases. Didn’t you just say in the earlier part that these Ottomans murdered the people they captured? Why are you partial to these murderers?

This is absolutely wild. A perfect storm of events that led a sure victory to a humiliating defeat, but the Ottomans didn't have any way of taking advantage of it and everyone who left the battlefield did so without getting anything out of it. That sounds like a textbook phyrric victory.

We only know that the crossing was the wrong decision with the benefit of hindsight. After they routed the Ottomans so effectively, there was a strong case to press the advantage. Also after disasters everyone likes pointing fingers, so after military defeats the sources often contradict themselves, so I would be very careful with these narratives. Also yes looting is disasterous to army cohesion, that was proven many times over.

He had NOT until the faulty report of Mehmed abandoning his camp arrived. He was like the only sensible commander and he tried to do it well till the end, but other than him, it does seem like an incompetence contest. Hello, I am Turkish. I watched this war without knowing the outcome, I thought throughout the video that it was a war we were defeated. In the end, the opposite happened. It made me proud of my ancestors once again. THEN I read about this war from my own Turkish sources. This war is actually a war won by the backward service; lumberjacks, tent makers, butlers, camelmakers and cooks start attacking the enemy with their picks, wood splitters, axes, scythes, cauldrons and ladles. His order was broken when the crusader army joined the plunder and this sudden attack caused panic. After the retreat of the enemy, the raiders and janissaries began to attack the Crusader army again and the balance was disturbed. This battle is also known in the literature as the "Battle of the Bucket and the Cauldron", as the rear guards contributed to the victory of this battle...

22:17 Great Video. Whilst it is true that this Battle was the last great victory on the battlefield for the Ottomans in Central Europe, it would be misleading to think that this meant the status quo remained the same until the war of the holy league in 1683. Rather, as discussed by historians such as Professor Gabor Agoston, warfare in Central Europe and Hungary transitioned to skirmishes and sieges of massive fortresses as opposed to large scale battlefield engagements. Professor George B Michels in his recent book “The Habsburg Empire under siege,” notes how during the mid 17th century, under the revived leadership of Grand Vizier Ahmed Korprulu, the political stalemate was effectively reversed by the mid 1670s, with the Austrians lacking the money or manpower to put up even token resistance towards the large scale Hungarian defections to the Vizier of Buda and the ottoman conquest of Habsburg border fortresses. Noting that a full Ottoman vassalization of the Slovakian, West Hungarian and Croatian captaincies was prevented purely by the intervention of an international coalition during the 1680s.
@alihandemiral70492 жыл бұрын
In Turkish public memory, this battle is mentioned as "pots and pans warfare", as the support of the non combatant units such as cooks, grooms, stable boys etc. was very significant in turning the tide. They picked what arms they could find and fought the looters. Seeing the ferocity of these non combatant units, The Jannissaries were riled up and joined the fray. At least, this is how the Turkish narrative goes, I believe there is some truth in it, as a country would not want to attribute victory to insignificant non combatant units rather than their elite troops, i don't see any advantage in that.

Although, Ottomans won miraculously this war, it was obvious that Ottoman war tech. was inferior to Europeans in terms of using artillery and rifles. In addition, Ottoman battle plans and tactics were mostly belonged to Suleiman the magnificent whose reign was 30 years ago. Meantime, Europeans improved their battle formations, tactics, weapons and armours.

Well thats not True. Ottoman Empire maintained its power in central Europe at another century. Numerous wars againist Habsburgs and Poles. Almost all ended with victory. Added south slovakia and northeastern ukraine under its direct control years after this battle. Even in 18th c. during 1735-1739 war able to defeat austrians and russians at the same time and took back Belgrade. I don't understand why most of the Turks i spoke especially kemalist ones hate their history so much, disown and disinherit the Ottoman Empire.
@kayagurcu2814 Жыл бұрын
@@deathdefyingowl first of all i have no intend to disown or disinherit ottoman empire neither hate my history my friend. 3 facts i am gonna mention here which made Ottomans hold their ground in central Europe (Hungary and parts of modern Slovakia) against Habsburgs till Prince Eugene. Btw, i referred Habsburgs as Europeans, not Poles/Russians. So your claim including victories against Poles/Russians is not relevant. Anyway; 1) 30 years war 1618-1648 2) Reign of Koprulu Family (1653-1683) 3) Enourmous Manpower against Europeans So, lets go 1b1. 1) when the 30 years war ended, Europeans got their peace. Then Austrian Habsburgs solely focused on their eastern borders. 2) after the 2nd siege of Vienna, grand vizier mustafa pasha had been executed and he was last of the Koprulu family. After him, corrupted and incapable statesmen took over the job and they mostly failed. 3) europeans made up the difference. Actually they didnt need this, their superior technology was overly enough to beat Ottomans during 2nd half of 18th century. Additionally, you should study on Habsburgs strategy against Ottomans after Zenta. They had no intentions to stretch their frontiers beyond Danube river. They knew over-weakening ottomans in Balkans would have a consequences which would make Russia a key player in the region. Yes i agree, Ottomans won few victories here and there against Habsburgs, Poles and Russians in 18th century. But its fate was sealed.

This battle remind me of one of my battle in Empire total war, basically the enemy (Marathas) trying to assault my fort using superior melee attacks but unsuccessful. So when i saw they were routing on masses i fixed bayonet all my troops and charge them head on. My units are all scattered and the remaining unbroken enemies began to pick my unit one by one, they even get to kill my general, luckily i could withdraw all of my troops back to the fort and this time attacking them with more cohesion, the battle is won but a very close one. This is an important example of keeping your unit cohesion even if your enemy are routing

His teacher Hoca Sadeddin Efendi told Mehmed III to remain at the camp and this was the dialgoue that occured. Mehmed III: Sir, What is to be done now? Hoca Sadeddin Efendi: My Sultan, what is needed is perseverance and decision making in your position This is the state of war; many of your ancestors' battles were won in this way during their time. Mucizat-i Muhammed Aleyhisselam and God willing, with opportunity and strength, victory belongs to the people of Islam. Remain optimistic.

Yes, the janniseries discipline and resolve must have been amongst the highest of any troops of that time not to mention their ability to hold their own against other exceptional well trained/disciplined troops who were armed and armoured to the absolute highest level is just incredible. Big respect to them. They were the elite of the Ottomans for a reason and they definitely showed it in this battle time and time again.
