Don, for me coming from the sprint car world, I always marveled over Steve and Karl, arguably the best owner driver combination that will ever be in the history of sprint car racing. In 1986 I believe at the Gold Cup in Chico California,(which he won 12 times) he had quick time, he got upside down in the heat race, tore it up, the frame was bent, Karl and Elrod went to work putting in a front axle, radius rods and a rear axle and Steve went out and won the main event. After the race talking to Steve, he was wore out, he said he couldn’t have lasted much longer, the frame was so bent that he could hardly steer it, that coming from the iron man of sprint cars. We were all staying at the Holiday Inn, the next morning Karl and Elrod pulled a new bare chassis off the top of the trailer, I mean bare, Karl preceded to cut every bracket off the old car and weld them on the new chassis, this was on Friday and they didn’t have to race until Saturday, before it was dark, it was done. Saturday comes around and Steve goes out and wins again. Karl was always a modest person, didn’t say a lot, but when he did, you should probably be listening. Great interview Don, would be good to hear from Steve but he’s so modest, I doubt it will ever happen. Good luck though, if it can be done, you’ll make it happen.

I was standing near Karl in the pits when Steve flipped in time trials. They couldn't get the car fixed in time for his heat race, so he ran the B and won. Won the A main next. I also watch them work on the car at the Holiday Inn. The front nose on the frame was 4" higher than the other side! And Karl got it working good enough for Steve to win. Karl sold the damaged frame to two kids for $100. Always marveled how Steve humble is. Is it any wonder they won so often?

It was always great to see Karl at the WoO races. If he came in a restaurant where there were race fans (usually wearing Sprint Car T-Shirts), he always greeted them like they were old friends - as if he knew they'd know who he was - and they did! He also had pictures that he would autograph, out in the pits, that he'd pass out to race fans, like the drivers do. A national treasure, great man. That was a wonderful interview. Thanks!

Hello, I remember my dad he was my step father but I love him so Howard Hall he raced in Winchester Indiana where he had a fiery crash in the pits 1963. He also raced him many other tracks in different states. He knew all those racers My stepfather was very very well known. And so was my mother. I still have a lot of those pictures of all the race drivers that he raced with and also One of his trophies which the other trophies that he won so many had rotted away where my mother put them in the shed. I also have the Anderson newspaper herald where explained and showed the accident in Winchester Indiana. The video I'm watching brings back a lot of memories of my stepfather wonderful father that he was and the people that he knew and raised with, I've heard so many stories growing up from my mother. My stepfather Howard Hall raced the red number 2 Sprint. I remember sitting in the car while he and a couple other guys were working on it when I was little sitting in the car. I believe kinser knew my father Howard Hall also in your video I saw the number 2 that was my dad's car Well I just wanted to say great video great memories. Thank you and God bless

Try looking at 305 sprintcars, its not down to whose your engine builder, but down to driver talent

Without Karl just wonder how good would Steve have been. Not saying he’s not a great racer but it takes a great crew chief to make it run.

Hard to say. No doubt Karl added to Steve's success over the decades. Thanks for watching, Ron. HMM

WoW!!! What a great video! Karl Kinser would be a great guy for any of today's Sprint Car Team's to have at the shop and in your hauler in the pit area! That guy has so much racing knowledge! I'm not a Trumptard though...lol

That is really the biggest problem with racing in general...it's big business...and big money...if you are not a top notch driver with huge backing you aren't going to get very far... when I was growing up a regular working man could get a decent used midget....a trailer...some tires and maybe some spare parts and go racing....not anymore...it's way out of the reach of the working man...well unless your a multimillionaire.....🏎️🏎️🏎️
