Hallo from Denmark again Great video . as I mentioned earlier in s another video . This is the golden age of the normans . Some normans had actully already tried to make a foothold in britain before 1066. In 1051 during conflict between Edward the confessor and Earl Godwin of wessex . Godwin and his family was exiled abd thief land confiscated by the Crown . Edward then invited a lot of Norman advisers into England . And some of them were trusted with the defenting the welsh border . And they built the first castles in England (moot and bailey type). LaterEarl Godwin and his sons returned with a fleet . Edward was forced to submit to the Godwin family . The Norman advisors were expelled . And the Godwin family became the de facto power behind the throne . And the border castles became property of Godwins son Harold Godwinsin . Later in 1053 Godwin died. And Harold became earl of wessex . And we know how Harold how became King in 1066 after Edwards death and the Norman invasion . But after William the conquerer became King of England . The Kings of Scotland allowed Norman knight to settle in and build castles . And if these knight were ancestor of Robert the Bruce . And when Robert the Bruce took the throne during wars with King Edward the first of England 200 years later . Normans also became Kings of Scotland . But by the 1200’es the Golden age was coming to and end. In southern The last normans ruled died out. And the daughter of one the last rulers. She married the german Emperor . And he took those lands. And in England . Almost the French lands was lost under the rule of King John . And the some of the Norman knights that came over with willlam the conquerer. They married into Anglo saxon noble families. And in time their offspring spoke English . And the Henry the fourth took the throne in 1399. The normans no longer spoke French . His crowning speach was in English . So the normans might conquered England . But the English culture and language conquered them in return .... And the normans was assimilated into the culture of the British isles ...

Hey man, just wanted to say I really appreciate this video as I feel that Tancred is pretty much the most underated crusader in the levant, and it's really difficult to find info on him as I can't afford to acquire proper articles or sources like the translated Gesta Tancredi. I just wish you could have mentioned a few more details like was how Tancred was fluent in Arabic due to growing up in the melting pot that was Norman Sicily, or how after Jerusalem was captured, he rode north with a small force and captured the settlements and territory of Galilee himself. Because of this Godfrey was actually concerned of the growing power of Tancred that could potentially challenge his own authority as his overlord, and tried to confiscate the holdings Tancred had just seized, but eventually gave lordship over those lands as Prince of Galilee. There were many other instances where Tancred was involved in crusader intruige and plots, such as the succession of the rulership of Jerusalem and the attempt to partition Tripoli between Jerusalem snd Antioch, but I understand this video would've been way too long.

man i love these videos. My ONLY complaint is that sometimes the maps you're displaying don't label the areas you're talking about which sometimes makes it hard to picture what is happening. I'd suggest just making sure if you mention a city it's displayed on the map at the same time. Amazing channel

Anyways I also somewhat feel (or deluded myself into feeling) I had a past life in the first crusade, based on fimiliar feelings ro place and cultures that I feel I'm comfortable with, or could adapt well into compared to ones Im not. So what cultures in time and place do you feel a connection too or would be comfortable in?

I'd love to hear more about the Frankish Lord's Thomas de Marle and his father Enguerrand I, Lord of Coucy had on their campaigns during the First Crusade. Mainly on how they and their men had fought during the war between Muslim troops and their crusader men like the battles they fought in and how they were fighting during those battles during the First Crusade between 1096 and 1099. Then find out more about the wars that Thomas de Marle had fought against his father in France and about the time when Enguerrand I, Lord of Coucy tried to do with locking his son Thomas in a castle forever by even disowning his own son. Also about the day Thomas saw a way to escape from this castle that his own father was locking him away and the reasons why Enguerrand I thought about doing this to his own son Thomas de Marle. The man who succeeded him as the Lord of Coucy in France. Also about Thomas's own reign over the city of Coucy, France from 1116 to 1130.

I know this happened over 900 years ago, but part of my love of history is my own emotional involvement with the narrative. The actors in this story are uniformly appalling. I'm having a hard time finding anyone to care about in this sordid tale of brutality and betrayal. If my sympathies lie with anyone, it's with the common people of Anatolia and the Levant who have had to endure millennia of being the principal victims of this brutality going all the way back to Sumeria and Akkad. Of all the candidate regions of the world that show humanity at its worst, this region seems to have the longest pedigree. richard -- “There is no present or future, only the past, happening over and over again, now.” - Eugene O'Neill, A Moon for the Misbegotten

Agree. The folks were the ones affected by the choices of the men who were in power, aka all the warlords. Did the people of Anatolia wished to be ruled by Turks? No. Did they wanted to see their lands filled with blood because of the Crusaders? No. All these events are caused by those who used their weapons for their own desires and ambitions.

ADANA was taken by my cousin Welf II von Burgund, son of Konrad II Markgraf von Burgund. His memory was apparently lost because he probably died as Adana was retaken by the Bachi Buzuks, so that all the Welf after him should be renumbered. Welf II > Welf III, >Welf III >Welf IV, Welf IV > Welf V and Welf V the duke of Bavaria > Welf VI

@@ArmenianKingdom You're talking to a Turk! We don't talk about Islam or Christianity. The Turks never fought against any religion. Turk became a Muslim, became a Christian, became a Jew, became a Buddhist, became a Manist, but above all was Tengrisit. There were soldiers from other religions and nations in our armies. Maybe they fought Christian Armenian soldiers in the Lepanto war. Is there anything you can say about that?

@@babaeren62 Yes. you speak NONSENSE. Armenians never fought for Turks, unless they were 'Yenicheries' - forcefully converted. It was purely religious wars; Crusade vs Jihad.

@@ArmenianKingdom The Turks are the reason why the Armenian church exists today! Do your Saints accept western churches? answer is No!! why did the missionary initiatives against the Armenians? Why why? Aren't you Christians? You're not Christian for Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants. They think so.!! But the Turks do not think so. I hope you understand my writing.

@@ArmenianKingdom You know nothing! It must be weird to talk about things you don't know. Jihad is not what you understand. Don't go wrong with a fanatic Wahabi terrorist. Those who design them are the Crusaders and the Zionists. The meaning of Jihad is not the same as your head.Jihad's meaning is solidarity. It means defending the people. This can be war, It can be hunger, It can be disease. In such cases, Jihad is declared. This is only with the authority of the Islamic caliph. There are only two known Jihad announcements in history. 1-Proclamation of the Prophet Muhammad against the pagans 2-Jihad declaration of the Ottoman Empire during the First World War! Only these. Both were for Defense purposes. And!! There were Christian soldiers in the Ottoman army! I don't mean the Janissaries!
