Brahmos is the Indian version of the Soviet/Russian Yakhont. It is co-produced by India and Russia. It is Intergated Ram Jet. (liquid fuel) 'Integrated' means that the space for rocket booster later turns into liquid ramjet combustion chamebr. In the 1990s, Russia could not pay back its debt to South Korea. So they sold some technologies for tanks, radars, and IRJ(integrated Ram Jet). South Korea absorbed these technologies and have come out with much-improved version. K2 Main Battle Tanks (MBT) has Russian touch in it. Korean indigenous missile defence (Chunggung and LSAM with indigenous AESA radar) have a Russian touch too. In 2021, South Korea test-fired land-launched anti-ship IRJ supersonic cruise missiles. Koreans call it 'Kyakhont'(Korean Yakhont). Everrything is in veil. Here in South Korea, some weapons are in veil. Especially those which means something to China. For example, some models Hyunmoo 4 is known to have 2 ton war head with 800 km range. This means it can fly 2000 km with a lighter war head. This range covers every corner of China's sensitive localities. So the exact info about Hyunmoo4 is not opened I guess they can develop submarine launched 'Kyakhont' without any difficulty if need be. As for supersonic cruise missiles, South Korea seems to be more focused on an air-launched version. Maybe they want for their indigenous fighter(KF-21) something like AARGM-ER (a anti-radar missile) which the US will never sell to South Korea, since this region is too hot.

not many people seem to know of the original P-800 Yakhont compared to the Indian Brahmos, which is ironic consider the latter is a clone of the former i think the Indian media is to blame for this, as they got a much broader contact with the English-speaking internet world, and India sounds very enthusiastic to promote its anti-ship missile too so most people will assume a supersonic ramjet anti-ship missile with that silhouette was a Brahmos instead of a Yakhont here in Vietnam, foreign press (mostly Indian) will occasionally brings up VN as a "potential Brahmos buyer", despite VN having bought & been operating the P-800 Yakhont missile (of the K-300-P coastal batteries) for years now
@tranquoccuong890-its-orge6 ай бұрын
i think the K-Yakhont might be a direct clone of the P-800 Yakhont too, while its capability might even come close to the domestic Russian 3M55 Oniks version (maximum range ~600-800km) once the reverse-engineered technology is understood and mastered, the K-Yakhont or the Brahmos could thereotically be tweaked and improved above the downgraded export Yakhont, and even more likely to be crafted from domestically-made parts
Wow!!! AIP and SLBM in one package!!! This should be very interesting!!!!

Note for the cruise missile: it is rocket-powered, sort of. The booster (the part spewing fire while going up, but is missing from the level flight picture) is basically a small rocket, most likely solid-fueled. It sent the missile up and away until it reaches cruising speed, and then fall off. However, for the rest of the way, the missile is either powered by a small turbojet/turbofan. these are jet engines that sip your regular/special mix jet fuel and combine it with oxygen from the air to generate thrust. Not as high thrust, but way longer ranged for the size.
Several wrong information is found in the video. (There are more errors but I can't mention them here.) 1. Canto Decoy is not accepted for KSS-3. 2. According to the submarine squadron operation policy of the ROK navy, every "Batch"s has 3 boats, not 2. So No.3 boat is the same as its nameship, Dosan Ahn Changho.

Japan is in a vulnerable position, being threatened by North Korea and China, and possible Russia with nuclear attack. They will not say it, but they cannot rely on the US for nuclear deterrence going forward. That is especially true with the Biden administration in charge- or any future one like it. Yes, Afghanistan points this out more clearly. Japan will need to eventually create their own independent deterrence. Right now, they are trying to keep the US as a close ally no matter the US administration, out of necessity- while trying to pull the US toward their thinking on the threats. If China does what it threatens in the press, invade Taiwan and simultaneously does a limited nuclear strike on Japan, what happens. Biden does diplomacy to prevent escalation to the US is most likely- capitulation, treaties and agreements ignored. We already see that they are good at ignoring US laws. Taiwan and Japan will be abandoned. The only defense Japan really has now is their Aegis (BMD) destroyers, and possibly drawing in the US, from the fallout on US bases in Japan. Regardless of laws, from a military perspective they need their own deterrence. China is probably calculating this scenario as well, making Japan’s stance on nuclear weapons in-affect destabilizing. The VLS on their Subs would be the best step forward for a survivable counter strike ability. Even having a conventional strike ability with SLBMs or cruise missiles on their subs sets the stage and provides some deterrence. The new PM of Japan, Kishida, is already pushing for strike weapons. They could easily modify their anti-ship missiles as land strike missiles (the ASM-3A, or the in-development missiles: Type 12/Type 17 increased range missiles, and the hypersonic ones they are working on as well). The latest version of the US SM-6 missile will also have a surface strike ability, and most likely added to their destroyers. Really, what you consider to be an offense weapon can be argued to be a deterrent and thus defensive, the extreme example is the MAD doctrine we have all been living under.
@tesokaaita60493 жыл бұрын
@@douglasstansfield3957 Unfortunately, Prime Minister Kishida was cautious about deploying nuclear submarines. Also, deploying weapons capable of attacking the ground is probably impossible due to the obstruction of the Japanese media and anarchist opposition, which are hostile to the government. Also, the majority of Japanese people are afraid to return to militarism, so there is a strong sense of refusal to excessively strengthen their armaments. Furthermore, it is necessary to make major changes to Article 9 of the Constitution in order to acquire the ability to attack enemy bases, which is quite difficult.

Cruise missile is variant of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyunmoo-3 . I think Russians at least conceptualized similar layout for Amur Class, so did Swedish Kockums for A-26. In any case, hull diameter for non-nuclear sub will limit size thus range-payload of the missile and cruise missiles are far less conspicuous. Especially ballistic missile will be detected early over flat sea.

My guess is SK need the fast delivery munitions for its submarines lurking outside the NK coast to neutralize NK nuke SLBM launchers before the launch. Cruise missiles would be too slow for it. I doubt NK has capability to hunt subs outside its litoral water.

the presence of the united states navy (7th fleet) you expect to be some form of reassurance. North Korea invaded south korea when the US was the official protectorate of the country, and when it had ground forced in the country. The US had its soldiers in the country during the CIA sanctioned military dictatorship. Democracy was not provided by US soldiers, but by korean citizens and students protesting daily and being beaten and disappeared for over thirty years while being protected by the US and when several divisions of US army were present. same situation when the SK president was assisinated and a second military dictatorship installed, after getting green light from US intelligence and diplomats. So your thinking isn't shared with any koreans on earth.

They obtained a license from TKMS so it very likely is based on the 214. it even looks like it and uses almost identical PEM fuel cells, same sonar, sensors, etc. Even the change to lithium ion is in line with U212CD.
@leedavid408 Жыл бұрын
Nope. They license built 209 and 214 then moved onto bigger and better. Only sub with AIP and lithium ion batteries are made in Japan and Korea. One of main reason why Canada is considering subs from these 2 countries, German subs too small and underwater time not long enough.
@tobiwan001 Жыл бұрын
@@leedavid408 the U212CD also uses lithium iron batteries. And btw. The U216 that was offered to Australia was even bigger (90m and 4000t). That Germany uses the 212is small is because it has to operate in the Baltic Sea, which is basically a lake. Size is not the problem. It‘s easy to build a big sub.
@leedavid408 Жыл бұрын

@@leedavid408 it says in the Wikipedia article about the KSS-III (with reference) that it is based on the U214. The U212/214 was the first using PEM fuel cells. I give you that Japan was first to introduce lithium-ion batteries on subs in 2023. However, the U212A being retrofitted as they have been testing it for many years. Hardly news then. Still your case about size is irrelevant as there is no technology behind making subs bigger. An whether they are 80m or 90m is not a leap in innovation. The U212/214/218 have all been sold extensively. So that Canada is considering Korean and Japanese subs is normal. And I am sure they are good. But for the same reason India is currently considering the TKMS subs.

I really doubt it (SK submarine ) has LOX as an oxidant for the F cell, as opposed to highly compressed oxygen as per what the GErman type 212 uses. LOX means you Have to use up the Lox from the get go... if you don't it will boil off and it will have to be released or the pressure vessel will burst. This automatically means a trail of oxygen bubbles in the sea which ain't smart as a stealth weapon . Moreover you have to warm it up before it goes to the fuel cell This will require electric power or reheat from the fuel cell . It also makes Oxygen refuelling at sea next to impossible (as opposed to compressed oxygen refuelling ) . TE Fidler

Agreed but the French seem to differ there variant utilise LOX & reformulated Diesel for hydrogen for their fuel cells.

Lets use hypergloic reaction, as in high test hydrogen peroxide & doped Kerosene/Diesel to drive a pair of 10 Mwatt class turbines. Compact, refuel at sea possible, reliable, simple, robust & high power to weight ratio of machinery, fast recharge for solid state li ion batteries. Power levels approaching not quite SSN flank speed but sufficent for long range (1000+ nautical miles) relatively fast 20+ kts submerged strategic deployments or very fast recharge 30 to 40 minutes or less.

@@kevinyaucheekin1319 That's efficient, but then you get SSN noise levels without SSN capabilities. For SSK, especially littoral types, fuel cells are absolutely silent; tie to Lithium Polymer batteries for sprint speed and you have a sonic black hole that can get up and move if need be...
