This Cherry Plum is just one of many pieces I have turned. It's always a beautiful end result and this piece is no exception. Most that I have turned have tight bark but this one was loose in places so what we have is a live edge bowl but more specifically a hit and miss live edge. Still looks cool!
Finished in shellac.

Typed a comment about the commentator who didn't like how you took the nub off. Erased it because I heard my mother's voice say, if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all. I'm almost 69, she passed away almost 18 years ago, but while I can't remember where I put something 5 minutes ago, I remember those words heard innumerable times growing up! 😉💕

A portion of Scripture says; "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it". Many of have similar experiences to yours. I remember my mom saying; " when you point a finger at someone, (in acusiation) you have three more pointing back at you. ;-)

My Mom still keeps telling me that, she is 87 now, and thank goodness I convinced her to stay inside and stop gardening this week. It was 100 degrees around her house in central Minnesota. Thankfully, I didn't end up quite as stubborn as her. I love every one of the pieces you've made from this wood, every one is cracked, and yet still holds together just fine. I just turned a knot of cherry on an oak dowel, and it looks just like a big eyeball. I think I may dye the oak in the center and enhance the illusion. Keep on making cool stuff, Phil, and I will keep watching!

The only thing missing on your video is the aroma of the wood as you are turning! A friend of mine was a turner, I used to watch him as he worked in his shed. One year I went with him to pick up a trunk from the New Forest in Hampshire, when we returned it being a bank holiday the mill was closed so we decided to cut it on the garage. So to say thank you he made me a standard lamp that I still have today it's in front of me as I'm writing. He took me to the shop where his articles are sold to buy a shade. I would love to have done some turning, I'm ninty now so its definitely a no go! You have a goal for each day now that you are on your own, so God bless Phil and continue to enjoy each day of turning. God bless you bring us sooooooo much pleasure! 😎🙏🇬🇧😅

Woodturning is an art performed in may different ways, with many different finishes and different looks in the end result. However, I think the one thing that turners have most in common, we turn wood because we enjoy it, not because of a right or wrong way of doing things. You turn beautiful and unique pieces of art. Never let any negative comment occupy time that is meant for enjoyment. Wonderful work as always.

To the guy that wants you to use a chisel, you could have taken that piece of wood and made a bowl out of it with a chisel and hammer, but you chose to use a lathe and bowl gouges. Same thing with the nub! Great job Phil! Hope the 8 hour ribs were good! My baby backs smoked takes 1-1/4 hours. If you want a real treat, go to a butcher shop and ask if they have a pork shoulder. Have it sliced into 1-1/4” to 1-1/2” thick. Smoke them and eat as a steak. It’s a Missouri thing. Take care sir! Kevin

Howdy Phil, I just finished some wood turning my self. I bought a ton of wood and materials from Home Depot and turned it all into a 10ft X 10ft boat dock with a 10ft ramp. At my age, 69, it will have been the last of that sort of wood turning I'll be doing. The works of art that you discover hiding in a hunk of wood are to me beautiful and amazing. Watching your videos gives me the idea that I would very much enjoy getting started in wood turning myself. By the way I caught my first nice Largemouth Bass off my new dock which makes the dock and ramp Paid In Full. I love watching your works and will continue to do so.

Great piece once again, Phil. I had to smile when you mentioned the viewer push-back comment on taking the nub off, why would you not do what you do, it is far more fun to turn it off. So a thought there, I think most of us turn firstly for the fun of it and others also get to sell some of what they do. Another beautiful piece. I agree. Turning off the nub is quick and easy. And when the top edge is as irregular as you’re generally are, taking it off on the bench with hammer and chisel would be very difficult. Just tell that guy who fussed at you to go pick his nose. Well turn off the nub if we want to.

This is my first comment on any video I've see on KZbin. I just don't bother. I never really watched it because I thought it was just music and movies. But I was unwell recently and I've found a wealth of beautiful videos of people like you doing amazing things with wood. I only wanted to say that I love the way you take the little nub off at the end of the proces!! If you took it off and had to rest it on it's side on a workbench to use an "ordinary" chisel you might damage the rim or maybe even crack the bowl god forbid!! Besides I love the anticipation of seeing the nubby thing come off your way. I am learning so much about all the different trees and processes that are involved in making a wooden bowl. Thank you sincerely for letting us share your woody adventures 😃😍

Thanks, Huw! I have a set of Cole jaws but never use them. You just can't hold what I normally turn in them. It doesn't really matter how you get it off as long as you do! LOL! HA! I'm so glad you found a way to enjoy your tea with the videos without sacrificing either. Good job, my friend! 😊

Okay, the bowl is great as usual. Now, i have come to the following conclution: besides the fact that you have the ability to see potential in the most rugged piece of wood, i have also realised that any Phil Anderson video without your sand-o-flex, is not a Phil Anderson original 😏😁. Great project yet again Phil 😁👍🏼👏

I think this might just be the most cracked piece of Cherry Plum that I have seen you turn Phil & am surprised how well it held together. That CA glue you use must be such good stuff as it has held many so many wood turnings for you & many other turners. Again this is a tremendous project. As for cleaning up the base on the lathe I think your method is the best & most efficient way to remove the nub. The final piece is a credit to you as is your ever memorable commentary, I love I love the way you 'tell yourself off at times as you work. Another lovely piece that is a credit to you, I love the bark sections & I don't mind the cracks. The finish too is so, so suitable to the finished piece. Cheers from Don from South Aust.

Phil my preferences on turning are much like yours. I think you have solid skills and I’ve learned tips and techniques I’m taking away for my own turning. Just bought Sand-O-Flex 80 and 180. Others don’t have to always agree with you but they should be nice. Great piece. By the way I’m recovering from a big back surgery and haven’t been able to turn for more than 6 months. You help get me my fix for missed lathe time.

THANKS PHIL, I ALWAYS LEARN SOMETHING FROM YOUR VIDEOS... I'V BEEN USING YOUR TECHNEAK FOR REMOVING THE TENON FROM MY WORK, AND IT HAS WORKED VERY WELL... 750 R P M IS THE SLOWEST SPEED ON MY LITTLE LATHE, SO I TURN THE NUB DOWN TILL I RUN OUT OF NERV/CONFIDENCE, AND THEN TURN THE PEACE BY HAND HOLDING THE CHISEL IN PLACE TILL IT PARTS OFF...
