I had trouble figuring out which way to turn this piece but once I got it, it was pretty clear to me. It's rare for me to have an idea for a shape in mind and then to be able to achieve that shape but it worked this time! It became a very natural pedestal bowl and I think this is one of my best turnings ever.
Maple burl, finished in shellac.

Phil, you are truly the Michelangelo of wood. Your ability to both retain and reveal beauty is rare. As an artist myself, it’s honestly moving and humbling to watch. “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.” ― Michelangelo

Great work on this. I think one of the greatest parts though is seeing how the woodturning community comes together on KZbin to elevate each other. The fact that through this platform so many people make friends that will send turning blanks like this off to others is amazing. I'm inspired more and more each time I open KZbin to try new projects and get others into this incredible hobby and your channel is one of my favorites.

Thank You Phil, Thank You Dave, Calmwood Creations.... Very few woods come close to the beauty of a polished/finished piece of Maple Burl. Include with that burl the bark and the natural contours of the wood. Does not get much better. Phil you made a beauty! It is small, simple and beautiful with all of the bells & whistles it takes to create a unique piece. Too cool Phil & wonderful show from start to stop. TM

“It’s a nice piece” says Phil, the master of the understatement. The camera placement, the commentary (“it’s not for your Cheerios, it’s an art piece”), the building excitement as the shape is revealed, like a sculptor with a block of marble. This was not only your best piece. It was like a feature film! Well done!!!

Well, Phil can actually donate one piece someday. Smithsonian can keep it for a display on crafts from time to time with credit to Phil or present it as a gift to some worthy or sell it for fundraising in the gift shop to somebody who will treasure it. Either outcome is a benefit..

I think that is indeed your best work. You have the eye for picking out the art in a piece. I still maintain I am just a utility turner, but you have taught me a bit about the artistic eye. Thanks Phil.
