Back in the school days, we always argued about the Mk and Street Fighter games being better on the SNES or the Genesis. Then the one rich kid would come up and tell us his daddy's $2000 PC was the best for all these games. Needless to say, we asked him to prove it and one day, he actually did. Deep down he was right, but we still argued relentlessly for our consoles.
@svr9161Ай бұрын
He was so right in fact that a couple years later, when age of empires 2 and war raft started rolling out, we were all begging our parents for PC's because we needed them for "school work".

I remember the school yard arguments for these games. Truth is when I was that age I loved Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat equally. Over the years I played both franchises all the time, but when MK11 came out for some reason I started to veer back to the old school MK’s, I found the new ones were getting to complicated for me. And here we are today lol thanks for the comment! 👊🏼

@@BushyStallionSame here. Grew up with MK2 and SSF2 on SNES. MK9 was my last "modern" game. Where I live it's really hard to source actual hardware and games. Your work in the last year has made me extremely invested in experiencing the weird and wonderful differences in all the various ports (stage design, sprite designs, strategy, music, sfx, everything). Thank you for doing this. Much admiration and respect, from Trinidad.

Interesting vid and this port was kind of neat to see in action. A fun fact about this port is that Oren Peli, the creator of the Paranormal Activity series, actually was the co-programmer of it and that's pretty amusing to know. XD

4:12 The borders are there because the PC versions of all the MK games actually display at the correct aspect ratio (the arcade versions did not), which is a bit wider than the standard at the time...and for this to display correctly on a 4:3 monitor, it has to include the black bars. It's the same as watching a widescreen movie on an old school CRT television...it has black bars on the top and bottom because it has to, in order to show the entire picture as intended. This was actually pretty standard for Midway games at the time. The NBA Jam games are the same way.

This is a pretty solid port of MK3. For the stages, I believe they are all there. Mk3 had a weird glitch where it would reset the stage order deepening on if you uppercut someone in the soul chamber. If you play on the Street stage, then the next battle you fight in the Soul Chamber and then uppercut to the balcony, the next fight will fight in the street again lol. As long as you don't uppercut to the next level in the Soul Chamber, you'll get the full cycle of stages for your game.
@VOANАй бұрын
Reason for that was cause the game came to the Balcony first and then the Bridge and then the Soul Chamber. Remaining on the Soul Chamber will continue the stage cycle onward but if you uppercut then the game will think you're still at the Balcony and will cycle you back to the Bridge and back to the Soul Chamber. This cycle also happen in Ultimate MK3 too and because of this the Balcony stage was completely remove from the Super NES and Sega Genesis versions of Ultimate MK3. It was both a clever but dumb move too, clever cause they finally fix the glitch but dumb cause now you fight Motaro somewhere else which makes it not arcade accurate.

So i spent my childhood never being able to play as smoke.

Great video as usual :) so much nostalgia. I still have all the MK for dos. I always loved them, no loading, so close to arcade perfection. And to be the technical guy who is nit-picking the settings in the GOG version are wrong. The aspect ratio look like 16:10, it should be 4:3 (dos game use non-square pixel or tall-pixel). There is some frame skipping (drop frame here and there) The cycles use in this dosbox are not optimal. For a better experience, use dosbox pure or even better pcem (and real hardware off course on a crt monitor). Thank you for your videos it is such a blast Thank Good Old Game for the preservation of all those games.

Absolute hit. Best (well, truest to the arcade) gameplay and audio of the home ports. Graphics were really good too, especially for graphical capabilities of PC games at the time. My only gripe was with the power bars and the rest of the heads-up display, instead of graphics for each life bar name it used text. Not really sure why they decided to go that route unless they were just trying to save space somewhere. But besides that, the game is awesome. The windows 95 specific version is just another clone of PlayStation, just with no load times. I'm glad we got the DOS version with round announcements and some other items the other disc-based games didn't get

Displaying the game on a tv will make it look a bit pixelated so I wouldn't fault the game on that. Its running at a much lower resolution than 4K and its being blown up to full screen on a 4K display.
@rekkimaru7Ай бұрын
Graphically the sprites and arenas still look better than the SNES. Two things to note is the lower resolution than the arcade and PS1 and this game uses only 256 colors. The GOG DOSBox settings might not be optimal, considering the speed and framedrop issues.
@BushyStallionАй бұрын
I hear that, I never changed any of the settings on this but I noticed that you can go into text in this and change some things around, I had to do that in order to map my controls to a controller after all. I wonder what the optimal settings would be for this version. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼

I believe the reason there is a Sound ON, CD Off it's because if you did not have a CD drive in your PC, you had to install the game via Floppy Disks. Then your PC would play the music via your sound card. I certainly remember the PC version having different music if you did not have the CD.

You spend months putting this project together and in the end you only get those 5 seconds of recognition while your tiny name scrolls across the screen but then some yahoo(s) decide to add some dumb, goofy effect making everyone's names unreadable for more than half of those 5 seconds so now your name is only visible for 2 or 3 seconds.

1. You should have played as Shang Tsung - given his character was usually the one that gave the most problems to the CD- based versions of the games (due to load times between character morphs), seeing if these were consistent on the PC version would have answered many questions. 2. CD audio might have been something to turn off to make it playable on slower systems of that time, as well as systems without an optical drive. (It mighht have been for people like me who prefered something like Metallica or NIN with the game noises instead!) Do you remember what type of monitors we had back when this game came out? There wouldn't have been a need for scanlines as most consumer-grade moniters were still CRT-based. (If you ever wanted to feel spoiled by gaming now: here you go!)

9:35 this is why I absolutely hated the uppercuts that would bring you up to the next room. You'd end up repeating the same stages over and over again. Even if you avoid using the uppercuts it's not like AI would.

@JimboJammyАй бұрын
Im guessing tge choppiness is down to emulation, or frame skips due to running it on hardware way more powerful than ever intended and the graphics being pixelated is due to the image being stretched up to the 4k res of your tv. Ive never seen much of, or played the pc version but i expect it probably has a native res of around 640x480

I just played this on Windows 10 a few days ago without any special settings. My Windows only version has a concrete block with different options by spinning the block. Yes, it sounds great and just like Arcade which is great but why are the graphics downgraded?!? This should look exactly like the Arcade. Something I found interesting is that Shao Kahn's shadow when he dashes is darker and more grey in this version whereas the arcade is white and bright.
