Mortal Kombat 2, SNES VS 32X! Which is better? (in my personal opinion)

So many people felt that the Sega Genesis version wasn’t a fair comparison to the more powerful SNES version of Mortal Kombat 2. I was asked several times to compare the SNES version to the more even Sega 32X version, soooooo I did. And what conclusion did I come up with? What is MY favorite version of MK2 between the SNES and 32X?
Watch and find out!

The characters on 32x look great. Good colors, good animation, and good controls (if you have a 6 button controller)...but the thing that kills it for me is that the stages don't look very good. And worst of all, the music, sound and samples are dogshit compared to the SNES. I'll take the SNES version every day and twice on sunday if only because of the music and sound.

The recent 32X hack showed that it could have been a little bit better but there was still a big factor that held back that port and many other 32X games: cartridge size. 32Mb is very small and there is only so much gamedata you can cram in it.

I’m a SNES kid. I had MKII when it first came out in the 90s. I loved it. Mortal Kombat II still stands as my favorite of the entire series. That being said, I think the 32X version is a better version. The differences are slight, but noticeable. I think the sound makes a difference. While the music may be more arcade accurate for the SNES, the 32X has much crisper voices. This makes it a more immersive experience. Plus, the colors are just more crisp on SEGA’s 32-Bit system. Both games are comparable when it comes to controls, as long as you use a 6-button controller for the 32X. All in all, you can’t go wrong with either version. If you have the ability, I think the 32X edges the SNES out slightly. Both are outstanding. But my vote goes to the 32X.

Actually the names outside of life bar doesn't botter anyone. It's just that Sega fans, because usually Snes version of the games blows Genesis versions out of the water (especially MK2), need to nitpick any little irrelevant thing they can find, and make a big fuzz out of it, so it "balance" the comparison with the (leagues) better MK2 on Snes. Actually, I say that the names inside the life bar it's worse, since it makes a little more difficult to see and measure where you life actually is, when it happens to overlap with some letter. It's cleaner and easier to see your energy left without some letters in the way.

Yup, fun factor is accurate for me, SNES is just the arcade at home with all of it's AI shenanigans, while 32X is the arcade at home (at higher difficulties) but it actually got tweaked in the lower difficulties (just no ending images, just the standard vs screen portraits for the characters (also no "have a nice day" quote in the Shang Tsung ending). Regardless, I play any of the two versions anytime due to how good they are overall (and yeah, the limited continues factor forced us to learn to some extent the ins and outs of the AI as back then, aside of accidentally introduce the cheat, we had no way to know without magazines or other stuff as the Internet wasn't a thing yet, in my case MKT N64 was the game that forced me to do that before I beated it for the 1st time with a combination of Noob Saibot and Cyrax).

Only for a short time was this the case. Nintendo was forced to price match Sega in early 1992 after they egregiously allowed the Genesis to gather a massive chunk of the 16-bit market during the 1991 holidays. Not only did they price match. They would also stop bundling 2 controllers in with the console.

My understanding is that the SNES sound hardware was primarily sample based. But there was also limited memory available to house the samples. Some developers really just knew how to work some brilliant compression magic -- Final Fantasy, Street Fighter** -- but others struggled, maybe because the samples chosen were too difficult to make sound good after compression in some cases. That may have contributed to the hollow / muffled sound in some games. (I also remember reading or hearing that the sound system doesn't have any built in sound synth so you had to record and load in samples just to get started. I may have misunderstood that anecdote though.) Genesis / 32x hardware could be considered almost the opposite: robust built-in Yamaha FM synthesis -- the twang -- and no need to worry about limited memory as an obstacle to start creating music straight away... but poor sample capabilities on Genesis. It's why music notes sound so crisp, while voices sounded scratchy and unclear. 32x had far better voice sample playback. **Fun fact: Both the Genesis and Capcom's CPS1 arcade hardware used chips that employed Yamaha FM synthesis as their primary methods for playing music. Therefore Genesis Street Fighter II music (before Super) sounded closer to the arcade than the SNES versions did, as the latter used a soundtrack with all-new instrument samples (there were no trumpets in the arcade version of Guile's stage). But the tables turned when Capcom moved Super Street Fighter II to the CPS2 board with Q-sound sample-based music... SNES sounded more like that arcade port whereas the Genesis couldn't hang. (For what it's worth I really dislike the instrumentation in most versions of Super, including the arcade.) I dunno what my point was. Your vids always make me think about sound and music.

The Genesis/Mega Drive renders the background using it's "limited" palette, passes it trough to the 32X which "adds/merges" the character graphics on top of it using it's 32000 color palette, and then outputs it to your display.

I've played all 2 versions in the 90s. Mega drive was a big disappointment and snes a big surprise. The 32x was incredible and compensate the genesis flaws. Graphically the snes had a resolution too low and made the game looks washed and too many sprites missing , the 32x was really good, but missed some small details. Anyway, I would give the edge to the 32x. Sound , I never liked the muffled snes music, but it has more samples than 32x and it the arcade original. But in the end I enjoyed more the 32x high frequency sound. The game play, well, this was always sega's benchmark. It plays great, the fluidity is awesome. But the speed walking backwards does not match the arcade. Don't take me wrong. The snes was one of the best fighting games for the system (I think it only looses to killer innsticn) but 32x was superior in all points. Liked your sincere video, because most people that grew up with snes are terrible people that thinks snes was perfect (just see some of the fanboy comments here) . And you gave a chance to 32x.

SNES version is better. Even Mortal Kombat 1 on the SNES graphics are better than the Sega Genesis version. The only difference was Nintendo didn't have the bloody fatalities in MK 1 on the SNES while Sega Genesis did. But the graphics are still better in the SNES versions of Mortal Kombat games. I have Mortal Kombat trilogy on my N64 and it looks great 🎮🎮

This is one of those cases where you take someone who hasn't played either version of the game and they would choose the 32x version 99% of the time. You put on some nostalgia blinders, and anything is possible. Massive credit for being consistently objective.

I feel like the 32x version is what the genesis version should have been. Maybe the voice samples wouldn't be as clear, slightly duller colours but the mk2 genesis port we got did not show what the console was capable of. As for fave version, I've only played 32x on an emulator but its really addictive, after a round or two you realise how nice it is to play but I still have nostalgic love for the snes version.

Just saw the video about mk2 for the genesis and it sparked my interest in mk2-on-genesis, so I went back to THIS video because I remembered that you had also compared to 32X version to the SNES. Clearly, the audio is less compressed on the 32X for the stage announcer and game audio in-general, however the SNES version is nearly flawless on just about every technical aspect, and it was an amazing feat that they got it so arcade-perfect on such ancient hardware even back then. I actually grew up with the genesis version and later on the SNES version but always preferred SNES as a kid because me and my friends analyzed it to death and ultimately I had to admit the SNES version was the superior game, but I defended the genesis ardently. As an adult I’m falling back in love with genesis/32x version. It’s crazy how many different platforms this game was on back then…. This game was one of the many reasons I envied everyone with a SNES back then, Nintendo owners just got treated right and it took owning the Saturn and Dreamcast to make me jaded with SEGA and stopped really paying attention to anything they made or going back and playing nostalgic titles, but when I hear the genesis sound font I realize how iengrained in my head it is! Love the channel man, much love Daryl keep it up!

I believe the 32X uses the Genesis for the backgrounds and it only handled the sprites. 61 colors just for the background is better than vanilla Genesis (which shared those colors with sprites), but still shy of the 128 for a background tilemap on SNES.
@GodKitty677
@GodKitty677 Ай бұрын
The issues with the mega drive is not the number of colours but the palette. If you had 20 shades on the same colour it would match the snes. The issue is the palette is 512 colours, then 512 hilight and shadow. This was rarely used. Thus palette was the main issue. There are hacks to increase this but they are expansive cpu wise (we are talking 1000's of colours). The 32x could have done the whole game itself but probe does crappy ports and rushed the 32x version. There is a hacked version that fixes things but the issue is the game needs a complete rewrite of its code graphics wise. There are much more colours onscreen when compared to the snes version.

When doing the comparison, it's a good idea to let everyone know that the SNES game came out well before the 32X version & its cartridge size was 8 megabits less than the 32X cart so 32X had more room to work. I would've loved to see Sculptured Software (who did the SNES version) get a hold of the 32X hardware with the extra memory compared to the SNES version. Would've been pretty much arcade perfect other than the CD quality arcade music. Good review man!

MK2 32X is what the original MK2 Genesis version should have been from the start if the team would have had more time and memory allowance. I never realized how bad the color was on Genesis until playing the 32X version- there have got to be some clever workarounds to get the Genesis to display color simultaneously like the 32X. SNES looks better, but the sluggish control would really kill the experience. I believe the 32X still has the Kung Lao split fatality hard lock-up if you spam the move again during the fatality animation.

32X plays better SNES still looks better and sounds better, I suppose because the music is closer to the arcade, albeit it very muffled. You should play ghr MK II arcade edition hack for thr 32x. This is a rather accurate representation of what the 32x (mostly) was capable of, if given the time for development and larger cartridge capacity.

I forgot to state in my previous comment that I agree with the sound for the SNES the muffled audio is there but I just am so nostalgic about it so it's better to me in my personal opinion.. The Sega 32X is pretty poppy but just muffled voice of SK on SNES is just kind of sick!

Imo the Genesis version feels the same as 32X. With the biggest omission being low crouch punch "though the least important move" I honestly think the 32X version uses the Genesis version engine. I've enjoyed both. They both play fast, 32X just added some missing color, sound effects , and a couple moves. I had both at one time,the SNES version was expensive ($75) when it was released in fall/winter 94.I knew it was going to be superior to the Genesis version before I played either one since Nintendo didn't edit anything like they did with the first game.I got the 32x version a few months later around spring 95 and remember it being slightly better and closer to the arcade.I never played the Saturn version and always figured it would have been the best but over the years I've read bad things about it,something to do with load times, missing parts and an overall glitchy game.

I had both back in the day. They were very impressive conversions to inferior hardware. Truthfully, I don't like them at all anymore. They are not true Mortal Kombat. I don't even consider the Midway Arcade Collections real MK. Those Midway collections have a pause feature that interferes with Random Select and fighting Smoke. The shadows flicker in those. Not true MK, but I played them all. I still own them all. I used to have all the discs for PlayStation 2 and the 16-bit/32-bit cartridges, but now I own them with emulation. They exist as files on my hard drives. I sold my consoles and discs long ago. The arcade, in my opinion, is the true MK, but I'll never forget the ones I grew up with on SNES and Genesis.

Oh yeah, the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 emulation... yeah, only the PC version got that Random Select and vs Smoke issue patched, the console versions had to sadly say no Smoke battle (and I'm not sure but is very likely that the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 emulator for MK2 in Shaolin Monks should have the same issue).
