I find it annoying certain companies do things different for PR packages. MELT Cosmetics recently released the Hot Box Collection and I was mesmerized by it. I just live for the colors featured in this collection and after watching some reviews I decided to get. I had some birthday and holiday money saved up that I used. I have never bought a whole collection from any company before and most of my makeup is drugstore. This was a splurge for me. When it finally arrived I was disappointed. The whole collection was crammed into a tiny box and it barely all fit. It was a far cry from what these KZbinrs were advertising. I wrote the company and although they don't have sponsors they do send out PR and what I saw was only for those special people who receive their PR packages. That means apparently anyone who spends $200 on their collection is not special enough to receive that packaging. I am actually paying this company for their products but the people who get it for free are the ones that get all that extra cool stuff. Kind of backwards isn't it? Or maybe that is just me... maybe I'm just crazy. Thank you for mentioning the fact that it is PR packaging. Nobody else ever does that and before all this happened with MELT I had no idea there was a difference.

GheegheeBuggin Awh man that is so frustrating!! I completely 100% agree with you. If someone is shelling out all of that money, they should get the beautiful packaging as well. Honestly, for PR purposes, I would rather get it in a plain recyclable box or shipping parcel. Instead of them wasting it on me, it could be used for people like you who actually use your hard earned money to purchase the collection. 😣

Can't wait to watch the rest of this, but just wanted to drop a bit of info on ingredient lists. You are right as far as the order of ingredients listed...mostly. They have to list the ingredients in order from most to least UNTIL they get to the 1% mark. Once an ingredient is less than 1% of the total product, they can list the ingredients in any order. I do feel like this is more important in skin care, but it's still interesting to note in makeup. Okay, back to the video now! :)

So, without knowing the specific mines they are sourcing their ingredients from I can't say for sure, BUT, in my job as a Ceramics studio technician I work with a lot of the chemicals found in these shadows. Recently a huge Talc supplier went out of business, and when the supply was exhausted everybody had to switch to a different Talc. The new one is a completely different color and texture, and has significantly effected the look and feel of our fully fired glazes. I'm certain that cosmetics companies use a much further refined form of these chemicals than we do, but it is entirely possible that they are facing the same supply failure that we are, and that change could be effecting their finished product. Anything containing Talc, Flint (Silica), or Titanium Dioxide may be subject to such changes in the last 4 years. This is honestly what I think might be happening to certain companies recently--It came to mind during the Subculture fiasco (very first ingredient--TALC) and could be effecting the outcome here too (with the Silica). As I said, hard to know for sure without knowing what mines they are sourcing from, but...it came to mind.
@FitChickGlows7 жыл бұрын
Kathryn Whitlock Great knowledge and insight!! But one does wonder why they then chose to go with Talc in Subculture rather than Mica which is what they originally used for Modern Renaissance that does not have the oxidative issues that I've experienced with Subculture. Funnily enough I've also experienced it to a lesser extent with the new Sephora Pro Editorial palette particularly with "Jefferey" the lime green AND its first ingredient is also Talc. I heard that Talc is quite the absorbent and could be why some shadows are problematic with oxidizing. Hmmm??? 🤔
@katwhit7617 жыл бұрын
Wow xD
@katwhit7617 жыл бұрын
I think it's entirely possible that in the testing phase they were using Talc from a different mine (NYTAL out of New York, for example, which is now no longer available unless you're buying backstock), but the supply ran short and they had to switch--possibly even mid-production which might explain why some people have been reporting that their Subculture palettes were performing "just fine" while for others...well...we've all seen the footage. For me the supply ran dry in the middle of a glaze testing run, and it set me back probably a month, because at a microcrystalline level Texas Talc, the new standard replacement, is just SLIGHTLY heavier and prone to a greater amount of clumping and oxidation. By volume, a cup of NYTAL used to weigh about 200g, this newer Texas Talc weighs about 215g. From a Ceramics perspective, this is leading us to add deflocculants to our Talc-containing glazes, because the Texas Talc makes the glaze settle faster and our previously chemically perfect glazes are now "too heavy" and forming cement-like bricks at the bottom of our glaze buckets. I have no idea what effect this would have on cosmetics, but it's the only thread I could really grasp onto that's tying a lot of these things together.
@FitChickGlows7 жыл бұрын
Kathryn Whitlock Brilliant brilliant inside experience and deduction!! I do believe you solved the mystery Sherlock!! And I hope you're also able to fix and perfect your glazes despite this setback. I hate when top ingredients sources get discontinued and replaced with inferior ones. It's such a great loss!! Thank you so much for sharing all this! 🕵️💡💥

How do you pull off that many colors on your lid? If I do more than gold and brown on the crease I look like trash.
@jupiter66287 жыл бұрын
Katie Marie all about blending and using colors to take one color to another. like you don't want to go from blue to red (like a look i did with the Jaclyn Palette- blue on the lid, red in the crease) without a transition color. in this case, it would be good to use purple. bur going from skin to a color like red would use a warm brown since it's kind of the in-between. choose similar undertones too ☺️ i hope this helps somewhat, it took me a long time to get good at eyeshadow- now it's my favorite part of doing my makeup. just takes practice and learning some tips ❤️
@LolaDelMarCaribe7 жыл бұрын
Katie Marie I agree with the ladies above but you also have to take in account your eye shape I have smaller kinda hooded eyes and don't have all the landscape Kristi has I have to make it work for my eye shape so you have to kinda alter the look and choose what flatters you the most if only two shades look flattering well girl rock those two colors! You can also use pop of colors on you water line or upper eye liner 💙
@jupiter66287 жыл бұрын
christine polanco yeah! you can also pull the fake crease so it looks like you have more lid space. i have a ton of crease to browbone space but not a lot of lid space, so i usually do a halo eye if i want to use multiple lid shades.

You can't make the same formula for each color. That's like mixing blue and yellow paint to get green.... And hoping the company can mix red and yellow paint to make green as well. That's not the way things work with pigment. This palette is a whole different color scheme, you need different ingredients to work with the different pigments . A white pigment(chalky, hard to bind) is very different from a red pigment(smooth, rich pigment). A red velvet cake can't have the same similiar ingredients as carrot cake just because one has a smoother, creamier texture. Am I making sense? I'm in school to be a cosmetic chemist and my English isn't the best but I tried to explain it in the most simple way

On the other side of the baking example. If you become a famous bakery known for it's amazing cake textures, you'll try your hardest to replicate that texture with every cake no matter the flavour or ingredients. I couldn't imagine how poorly Sprinkles cupcakes would've done if their cupcakes and frosting suddenly changed one day.
@wendythomas93617 жыл бұрын
Your analogies are pretty weak unless you're referring to the need to have different formulas for different types of shadows. It makes perfect sense for a duochrome to have a different formula than a matte, etc. People understand that. Aside from obvious differences, brands should strive to be as consistent as possible across their products.
@TheNailFairy1017 жыл бұрын
CriscianaLovely you can make the same formula with different amounts of Mica. That's how Stephanie Nicole explained it. Dog course different colorants react differently but the main colors that have single shade formulates are red, blue and purple.

Michael Finch tends to go pretty heavy handed with his brushes. I've seen a lot of his videos where he's seriously punching the shadows with his brush, which I think is why the shadows were disintergrating like in Subculture.
@SimmerLiv7 жыл бұрын
Yeah but his eyeshadow usually looks flawless, not everybody does makeup the same and he shouldn't have to change that when other shadows don't require that especially for the price
@Pleasedonotperceiveme17 жыл бұрын
LivLaughLove Yeah for sure, I agree with that. I'm just saying that because he's heavy handed, that's likely the reason why it was so powdery

huda beauty rubs me the wrong way I haven't liked her since she claimed her mink lashes were cruelty free... mink lashes CANNOT be cruelty free
@RawBeautyKristi7 жыл бұрын
indie cindy dear god I wish I would have known this before making the video, I would have addressed this in the video. Man.. Brands that claim they use cruelty free mink are lying to themselves. Not possible, Huda.
@rubyrayne87 жыл бұрын
indie cindy I thought it was bc she does have faux mink lashes that's what she claimed is CF? Or bc they say you can brush the little mink and they aren't harmed in the process. Either way, it's my understanding that the market definition for CF is that the company doesn't test on animals. And the Vegan definition is more about not using any animal products (mink and carmine in this case). I think there needs to be a distinction between the two for the consumer. I do understand that personal belief of what constitutes cruelty free is different than the market or industry definition. But in this case Huda is using the industry definition of cruelty free. And again, these are terms that the industry uses to clarify the impact of animals. Ones personal belief of what is or isn't cruelty free doesn't change the meaning of the term. I hope that made sense. I'm just trying to say if they don't kill the mink or test on animals, this is cruelty free by definition.
@CindyLoves1D5SOS7 жыл бұрын
Ruby Rayne companies that use mink hair for lashes aren't cruelty free because maybe they aren't killing the animal by definition but they collect the hair from minks that are locked up and not treated the best... minks aren't friendly animals and are not to be enclosed therefore you can't say an item in cruelty free because an animal is still being harmed in the making of your product

I LOVE this eye look--truly stunning! You did such a lovely job choosing and arranging the colors. I can't apply makeup with any amount of skill, so I love watching your videos to see what looks are possible when you think creatively and have a deft hand. Gorgeous!

I would love to see you do a video dedicated to your favorite eyeshadow pallets for price and color pay off! I honestly don't even watch anyone else for reviews anymore because your opinion is always the most trustworthy and honest. I love it! And your bloopers..... I die everytime

I know this is old but the reason companies change their formula is because every single color (even slight shade variations) use different amounts/types of pigments. Each pigment combo requires tweaking the binders and other ingredients. A tiny change in a pigment molecule on paper can make a HUGE difference in necessary binders, etc. For example, two molecules that have the exact same number and type of atoms can smell taste different just by changing the placement of a bond.

You look SO GOOD in this video. You have a slimmer face and with your longer hair it's very complimentary on you. I just wanted to throw that out there because I'm proud of you! I liked you going bold with this look, I enjoyed this video with showing how the crazier colors can blend together. I'm looking into a few of the different items you talked about today

Huda beauty is not a cruelty free brand they have mink lashes which are never cruelty free!!!! Just saying. Love the video like always kristi :-)
@rosiellagrace7 жыл бұрын
Kathleen Kelly right?! I suppose it's just how some people see it / rationalize it but I feel the same.. it's shady how companies word things. All because they don't sell in China and don't test ON animals, doesn't make them cruelty free. I can respect a brand that's upfront but trying to play on words to deceive people just seems so fucked up to me.
@kathleenkelly87357 жыл бұрын
Rose Ella-Grace yeah me too. It doesn't sit well with me and as a vegan I just can't bring myself to purchase from huda. There is no cruelty free way to get mink lashes! So it is really frustrating that they claim they are something they're not.
@rosiellagrace7 жыл бұрын
Kathleen Kelly I wouldn't support a brand, regardless of the shady way Huda wants to use word play for more customers, that uses natural hair from animals.. if some people want to pretend those animals live in some little lot of forest where they're happy and free, and someone runs along behind them collecting hair that falls on the ground then that's their prerogative. I do not need lashes that came from an innocent animal, ever; there's tons of other options! I'm not vegan but I know that makes it even harder for people to make purchases when companies want to downplay something, like when carmine is used, so I do feel for ya, girl! Even if they get a few customers who believe them at face value, once they learn they were played it's not like they're going to continue to give them business so it makes zero sense to me why brands can't / won't just be honest!!
@Mel-pb5xw7 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree - in theory - but there has to be a way of differentiating between the issue of animal testing & the issue of animal derived ingredients &, as such, we have the current way of what constitutes a brand as "cruelty free" as referring to only the testing aspect. For those avoiding "all of the above" the differentiation may not Dem to matter but it's important for several reasons, not the least of which is that many people would never start their cruelty free journey if they felt it was all or nothing at the beginning; tackling the animal testing issue first is more feasible for many, similar to many being vegetarian before vegan, etc. In reality there are sadly a LOT of brands accepted by many/ most to be cruelty free that use animal hair brushes, so while using mink is particularly horrific It is hardly unique for a cruelty free brand to be using animal hair. For just a few examples elf, Butter London, & PUR cosmetics all use animal hair in at least some of their brushes; I find it especially problematic in the case of elf b/c it is widely advertised that their makeup is not only CF but vegan, w/ the convenient specificity of the word "makeup" - rather than brand, products, etc - to make this technically true but IMO pretty darn deceptive; none of their newer brushes are animal hair so fingers crossed they will be phased out sooner than later but in the meantime it leans to a lot of confusion & people thinking they're buying vegan when in reality they aren't.

Kathleen Kelly thanks for the info - won't be getting this! No excuse for animal testing x🐾🌱

You're so talented! I love that eye look. I love shadows that you have to build. I don't like shadows that are so pigmented you can only do a bold look. I usually like to do more subtle looks but want these options. It's such a gorgeous palette.
