As a returning half Turkish commenter, the 'ğ' in Çalhanoğlu's name is actually a silent letter that serves as a transitional semi vowel that slightly prolongs the letter before it. The closest English letter to it can be considered the 'W'. And while I'm writing this comment that is of no actual value, 'ş' is pronounced as an 'sh', 'ç' as a 'ch' and 'ı' (the I that doesn't have a dot on top of it) is a letter that doesn't exist in most languages, but is actually pronounced by everyone between two consonants, usually at the start of a latter and slightly resembles the 'u' at the beginning of the word 'utter'. Turkish is also a language where every letter in about every word is pronounced distinctly, so the 'r' and the 'h' in the word Fenerbahçe are pronounced the way a Glaswegian would pronounce them. Hope this helps if the desire for a deep dive into Turkish happens to come your way as terrible transfer windows come to Sunderland's 👍

With all the research that clubs do before signing players, checking their whole history through the youth ranks, and finding out even whether their temperament and personality would suit the team, the Benjamin Mendy one is weird. It doesn't strike me as a new thing for him. So why wouldn't Man City, known for their diligence in signing the right players, would they not be able to unearth this kind of thing.
@violetcitizen2 жыл бұрын
Because sadly most big clubs don't care about that kind of stuff unless they go public. If man kick ball good, he can be a despicable piece of garbage until it's found out.
@lennard93312 жыл бұрын
From what people who were close to him have to told in the French media is that the root of Mendy's allegedly (just for legal presumption of innocence) absolutely disgusting behaviour has been the lack of a proper local support network in Manchester when the big money hit. It should be noted that many ethnic minorities in France basically live in what you'd call social enclaves with little outside cultural influence, and my understanding is that Mendy grew up in a classically very male dominant environment, which would no doubt have affected his perception of what he was entitled to once he became wealthy and famous, so I don't think any amount of research would've managed to predict how these underlying factors would end up creating the perfect storm that his purported behaviour devolved into.

It's hard to ask clubs to pay 40m (at the very least...they like to jack up the price) for someone who's never been able to keep his temper in check and also hasn't really proven himself on the big stage (not including the Euros). I'm pretty sure Milan tried to offer more than their 40m price and they jacked it up to 45m. I have a feeling they (Sassuolo) might be soon to decline.
