Fun fact - In his 14 full seasons as manager, Pep Guardiola has only finished behind four clubs in a league campaign - Real Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham. The fun part of this as a Spurs fan is that all the other teams mentioned won their title that season, where as we of course won f**k all.

I don't think people understand how good (and influential) that 2011/12 season was by Mourinho. Sure you can say he had an expensive squad at his disposal, but it was a largely underperforming squad, that had not won a league title in over 3-4 years. Going from that to becoming the first La Liga team to win the league with 100 points, and scoring over 100 goals was insanity. And beating Pep to the title, during the year of Messi's ludicrous 91-goal tally, was truly something special. Mourinho brought a serious winning mentality to the team, which Ancelotti and later, Zidane built upon. I truly believe that without Mourinho laying the foundation, Real would not have observed the level of recent domestic and European success that it has.

That is my favorite Real Madrid team ever, and it speaks volumes to me that to this day, the most hurtful defeat to many Madrid fans I know are those penalties vs Bayern. They eased past everyone not named Barcelona, and if not because Mourinho got a bit conservative after Bayern scored the 2-1, that game could have been a 5-1 with how that team had started.

The only question mark for Guardiola, when compared against the other greats, is that he has never had the same success as them with an underdog team. Sure, Jose won with Real but he also won the CL with Porto, Chelsea's first league titles in 50 years, a treble with Inter and Roma's sole European title. Fergie did it with Aberdeen, Klopp with Mainz and Dortmund. Guardiola by contrast has managed Barcelona, Bayern and Man City. I would argue that each of those teams were strong favourites to win their leagues in the seasons he was there.

I think that this is even more true with Mourinho. Mourinho has exactly one massive win (Porto's CL) after which he got the easiest jobs and was never exceptional with them. Whether it's Real, Chelsea, Inter or Spurs - they were equally as good before he joined and after he left (apart from Chelsea who got all that cash when he joined, but they were as good after he left). He never really outperformed his predecessors or successors which Pep always did.

Finally someone mentioned that Guardiola did'nt actually inherit a super team but rather made one out of a relatively struggling Barca with bold decisions and his tactical genius I don't think that in 08 anyone would've predicted that barcelona will win a trophy let alone the sextuple , Messi will instantly become one of the best players of all time , Deco and Dinho will be sold , Alves Pique and Abidal would become the best in their position , Iniesta will be elevated into a global icon , Xavi would have his best ever season and Busquest will emerge as the best CDM of all time. It was all Guardiola's doing. And Its about time people give him his flowers for that.

Criminal to not mention Vicente Del Bosque. With Real Madrid, he was a manager of the Galacticos team that won the 2 Champions League and 2 La Liga titles, before his harsh sacking in 2003, which started the downfall of Galacticos. 5 years later, Del Bosque was appointed as a replacement of Luis Aragones, who won the European Championship that year, and revolutionized tiki-taka on the national team that resulted in 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 triumph, becoming the only European country to do a back-to-back winners of European Championship (and maybe, one of the greatest international football team of all time).

Guardiola changed football and not for the better imo. The success of his Barcelona team and the Spanish national team between 08-12 changed the way football was played forever. The game became increasingly possession driven, every player playing a very disciplined and specific role in a well oiled machine. Strikers have largely become a thing of the past at highest level of football, as have traditional central defenders who's job it was to actually defend rather than being able to pass a football really well. Ball playing centre backs, false 9's, less individuality and expressionism on a football pitch: this is Guardiola's legacy. He changed the game forever and was hugely successful at it, but for me football is less entertaining than ever because of it.
@evanclp514

tiki taka football was only fun to watch at Barcelona because Messi, Eto'o, Henry, etc., were pounding in goals up front. as soon as that same system was translated to the Spanish national team which didn't have world-class forwards, even though it was still successful, it was insanely boring to watch. his tactics have shifted away from that slightly in recent years, mostly i think because of Klopp pushing him with the high-pressing style and midfield overloads with full-backs.

I mean... A Sport will always evolve to the tactics that win matches. Please consider an Overachiever managerial list Alfie? Many of your example (esp. 'the special one') are people who have achieved at elite teams, with star-studded squads and endless finances. Oh and the penultimate bit- brilliant comedy timing. 🤣 Thanks.

Lolololol. Oh god he’s not even in the top 10 managers for Letti let alone in the top 10 since 2000. Hahahaha. Jesus. Talk about pandering to Hispanic fans. Sorry but the prem is the toughest league. That’s why plenty of managers come with trophies to England only to walk away with their tail between their legs. (Touchel, Conte, Ancelotti, ETH, LVG, Poch, Mourinho, etc) But yeah he has done a lot with a club that always finishes in Europe and has a wealth of experience. I mean he has taken Athletico from a team that sometimes challenges for the La Liga and does okay in Europe to a team that sometimes challenges for the title and does okay in Europe. You ask any fan of a prem team if they’d want Simeone as manager and I doubt you will find anyone that wants their team managed by that nonce. Oh and I’m not English. Just also not South American like you so not being tribalistic and claiming someone is amazing just because we are from the same continent. Sad.

As long as you ignore Shankley, Cullis, Busby, Clough, Fergie, Wenger, Dalgleish, Claudio, Mourinho, Pep, Klopp, Toshack, Zidane, Scollari, Enrique, Pozzo, Beckenbaur, etc I mean Mario Zagallo is the best Argentine manager ever… Jesus. When someone only knows football through FIFA and KZbin videos. Jesus. Calling someone a goat. Ahahaha. That’s like saying he was a goat player… ahahahaha. Yeah the GOAT if you forget about at least 5000 players and managers better than him.

@@AlTarif If ever there was a time, it indeed is now. I’m confident we (I’m a Barcelonista) will get thru PSG as will City thru Real and Arsenal thru Bayern. Dortmund are by no means a pushover but Atleti can get thru. Simeoni can mastermind his way thru us in the semi bringing them up against Arsenal in a probable final which they can win but just as easily lose. Frankly, this Champions League is basically City’s to lose and while I’m confident Arsenal and Real could win it, too, I’d honestly sooner see Atleti or Arsenal win it. Barcelona winning it would be awesome to vindicate Xavi but I don’t think we have anywhere near the said depth to pull it off what with five games to play considering out medical department is currently full of starters… Either way, as long as Real, PSG or City don’t win, I’ll be okay with whoever wins it. There are a few good storylines headed into the semis but the best is Atleti or Arsenal winning their first ever European Cup cementing the legacies of either Simeoni or Arteta, both of which deserve it for their tremendous work behind the scenes of both their clubs. And while I am Brazilian, I’d still be really happy for Diego to win the European Cup with Atleti then go on in many years to lead the Argentine squad to their Tetra. We’ve already got ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ so we can afford to see Argentina win a fourth without worrying too much about when we will finally be Hexa… if ever! 🤣

I agree that the best managers are the ones that make players and teams play and perform above the level they have. Guardiola obviously knows his job of herding stars and picking up trophies well, but he is actually underachieving because he always had the best players, and was a bit of a flop in the CL with Bayern. The best managers are those who work wonders with the limited squad they have. Van Gaal, Klopp, Clough, Ferguson also actually, Hiddink and Ranieri although that was a one off.

Props to Unai Emery: he has his own list of honors that would place him on a list like this, but he has done a couple things of note at Aston Villa: 1) He has taken players acquired by two different managers, players whose own values had fallen quite a bit, and immediately turned them into a (possible...it is almost April) Top Four spot. That includes his first match against United. 2) Player values have risen since, along with (unfortunately) more players like Douglas Luiz getting call-ups for their national sides. This has been attributed to the effect of Unai Emery's coaching in the words of these same players. At this rate, I believe Unai Emery would easily earn a spot on a list like this in the future.

Guardiola inherited an insane squad that was still on their prime, however, where me and my friend argued that elevated Guardiola and gave "legitimacy" (As if he needs it that season is special regardless) is how many decisions he made that season that were absolute game changers. Messi into false 9, rotating with Eto'o as a centre forward, starting Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta (Iniesta was known to be awesome already, but not to that extent) over Deco and Yaya Toure, as well as clearing house. Keeping those who were committed and bringing young players or extremely important role players for the squad (Keita, Busquets from B, Pedro from B, Hleb, Pique and Dani Alves) is what made that team truly special. The belief, confidence and philosophy oozing from the team is why even as a Madrid fan, it is very hard if not impossible to argue that is the greatest team of all time in terms of a single season. It changed the sport, it evolved into the modern game and essentially crafted Spain into the eventual world champions. I am not a fan of Guardiola as a spokesperson or how he sometimes clashes with players, but that man is a genius, and other that his stint at Bayern, everywhere he goes he just wins and looks so much better than everyone else (Yes he is penalized for not winning Champions at Bayern). Easiest top spot I have seen you give in a while.

There's a fascinating story to tell, from going bankrupt and slowly climbing back, to various great names that played there such as Ribéry, Makélélé or José Luis Brown, to the story of the Brest president going up against the Colombian drug cartel. Plus, you can have a lot of Brest related puns. The greatest managers for Brest since 2000 are Sir Alex Dupont and "King" Eric Roy

We've seen other top managers have poor seasons at big teams with massive budgets.. eg. Ancelotti was once sacked at Madrid, Jose at Madrid, Chelsea and United.. Klopp had a poor season at Dortmund and one last season, I've never seen a Pep team capitulate and finish outside the top 4 or something. Ridiculous consistency at the highest level

A lot of people say that Guardiola owes his success to being in top teams. He not only remade Barcelona that was falling apart in 2008, but the same can be said about Ancelotti - he only has won trophies with superteams. But nobody says that. Which is exactly the point: good managers like Ernesto Valverde can't manage a team full of stars, for a number of reasons. That's why Xabi Alonso is exciting news. But regardless, Guardiola is the best manager right now and one of the absolute best of all time - for now.
