I've recently returned to golf after about an 18 year break. The price of putters is absolutely mental ! When I stopped playing the Ping Anser was the daddy and the Odyssey two ball had just made an appearance , I think they were both about 100 quid. I get that tech in woods and irons can be more forgiving /better etc etc , but , I cannot accept these putters make that much difference. I recall a Rick video where a Tour Pro went around with a budget set with a budget putter and he holed everything with it ! I think he even asked if he could have it. 400 pounds plus for a putter is crazy money.

Always amazes me how some people baulk at paying £300+ for an amazing quality handcrafted putter, that is the most used club in the bag, but will happily shell out £500 for the latest driver tech! @TheDetective-dg4vj11 ай бұрын
Rick got a putter fitting and complete lesson on all aspects of putting with Brad Faxon!! He is a bad Putter and couldn't make 5 20 Footers EVER on a regular course. Synthetic putting surfaces instantly get grooved from the ball rolling over and over and over and the person stepping down the line to retrieve the balls! It creates a trench so your ball constantly goes straight and you have to really hit a terrible putt to have it leave the groove that's been made in the fake turf..Rick would not have a KZbin channel if you told him he had to go out and make 5 20 Footers on a real green before he gets to shoot content again!😂😮😅

Perfect review! I'm a big fan of Taylormade from the start (25 years golfing), but they are very strong in wooden clubs for decades. Some of the irons where epic (played 300 iron set 17 years) but not everything was exceptional like the wooden range. That quality is similar with Titleist putters and wedges. The feel and quality is next level like Taylormade in woodies.

Upgraded to a Scotty Cameron Phantom X11 last year. It’s a work of art. Love picking it up and practicing. I’m not sure I’m a better putter because of the Scotty, however it does give you this confidence especially form inside 10 foot that you can make a lot of putts. My thought on golf club feel in general is that it is very much a personal thing. Certain golfers want to feel different things than others, so the putter feeling softer or harder isn't necessarily a bad thing depending on who you are. The feel of a club being better or worse is very much a subjective thing. This is also TaylorMade's first go around at milled putters, while Scotty has been doing it for ages, so some areas to improve on was expected. I have no doubt that TM are going to get a lot of info back because A LOT of people were waiting for milled putters from them and will make changes based on feedback. One change hopefully will be the naming, which you were right on about btw, its horrendous. Like if you tell me Spider, Juno, Soto, Del Monte, Newport, Del Mar, Phantom, Anser etc. easily identifiable names and I'll instantly know what you're talking about. These, not so much.

I had that same feeling when i first briefly tested and bought my first, and only, scotty cameron twenty yrs ago, a Newport style blade. Unmatched feel and balance. About seven yrs ago i bought a semi mallet face balanced putter and have been using it ever since. It is heavier in the head which is not quite to my liking but has served me well especially in the long putts. I still use the scotty occasionally but the face balanced one is more tolerant and produces better results for me in general. Not a fan of the current trend for heavy headed putters but clearly some feel better balanced than others, and the high end ones come with adjustable weights. It's hard work to choose a new putter these days and, given the high prices, it's probably better to look for a good custom fitting - but this too is not easy to find.

I love the new test bay! As for the new Taylormade Reserve putters. Very well done. I recently replaced an Anser / Newport 2 style putter with a Scotty Super Select Newport 2.5+. Really a nice putter. The 2.5 was a better putter for the greens / courses I frequent most. I did try the new high end Wilson, Evnroll and Cleveland putters, but the Scotty performed better for me. Shortly after my purchase, Taylormade introduced their Reserve line. I spent a great deal of time at the putting bay with my son going back and forth with several high end milled putters. All very nice. He bought the B13. So after multiple rounds of on course putting and comparison putting, it was obvious I putt better with my sons B13. It rolls the ball online better for me. The good news for me is that my shop has a 90 day return guarantee. I swapped out the Scotty for the Taylormade. The price difference was a box of Pro V1’s. For me, the Taylormade stood out as my best performance option. And the Taylormade grip fits better in hand. And the head cover is classy AND VELCRO FREE. I hate Velcro closures. Good luck to all avoiding the putter Merry-Go-Round.

Rick, You are a GREAT person to test putters---you're a very good putter. I think you nailed it when you referenced jewelry. Let's face it, at a certain level, putting is about confidence and when you're using a Scotty, you know you have the best...and if you miss, it must be your stroke...not the putter. This is the challenge with anyone releasing a new putter...when people miss a putt will they blame their stroke or the putter....if they have a Scotty....they will never blame the putter.

It's interesting to watch this. I think the sound and feel of the Taylormade putters is better than the Scotty Cameron putters. To me, the quieter/softer sound of the TM is preferred over the clickier/harder sound of the SC. Just goes to show that people's personal preferences have to be accounted for in the fitting process. The grooves on the TM putters are likely what gives the softer/quieter feeling. Great review and really enjoy the new studio!

I think it might have been good to also compare it to the equivalent Anser-style putters from Ping & Odyssey. Personally, I think the entire "super premium" putter thing is a perfect example of the mental aspect of golf. Paying more for a putter shouldn't make you putt better, but many people will claim it does. Take the Scotty Cameron name off and hide the ability to see the weights (weight it the same, just have them built-in so you can't see them), tell the pros it is a budget no-name putter costing under $100, and then keep careful stats on how they putt...

Thanks for the review. One comment I rarely understand from many prolific golfers is about the price of these top end putters. They are willing to spend $600+ on a driver that they will use 12-14 times on a standard par 72 course, yet have trouble spending $300+ on putter that will be used 28-36 times on that same course.
@henrikravn6050 Жыл бұрын
That premium driver can easily give you 10-50 yards extra. Plus extra precision so you end in fairway. Making your approach shot much easier (from +170y to -150y) ensuring you end on the green and not beside it. Putter... I'm not sure it changes that much. In the end it comes up to reading the green and getting the correct speed. I had an old putter (just a clump of iron) the I got from a £250 set I bought 30 years ago, and I could bomb puts with it. It was amazing... Now I have a ping mallet putter. Much softer feel, but I am no better at putting than I was before. The feel is better with a +300 putter. No question... But it will not make you better at reading the green, and I don't see it sinking more puts. I would rather get at £100 putter and then spend 200 extra on a driver.

@@henrikravn6050 If you were upgrading from your grandad's wooden driver circa 1972 to today's Taylor Made Stealth 2, then yes, I can see you and me gaining 50+ yds of distance. On the other hand upgrading from TM Sim2 to TM Stealth 2, not so much. I also never said that getting an expensive putter is going to automatically improve your game. Only repeated practice, golf lessons and time will do that. What a good putter can do however, is make you "want" to spend more time on the practice green, instead of just trying to bomb a bucket full of balls, down the range, hoping to go past that 300 yd sign.

Definitely interested in seeing more of both budget and high end "internet" or "Instagram" brands get an in-depth review. Is Robin or Stix any good? Are Lazrus wedges worth checking out? On the other end of the spectrum, is a $500-600 putter from LAB Golf worth your time over a Scotty or higher end Odyssey? Love the channel, keep up the great stuff!

Great video Rick! Can’t wait to see more! I was wondering are the videos going to be random with different clubs and brands every time or would they become for structured where you would do a few videos on TaylorMad products, the Callaway, Wilson, Ping, Cobra, etc.? Maybe I might be too rigid lol

Great review 👍, I’m still using my Odyssey 2 ball blade that I bought about 20 years ago because I haven’t found a putter that can match it never mind beat it not enough to spend a weeks wages on anyway 😁.

I love this new channel Rick.. but a little feedback, I almost missed the video I didn't realize it was you. Not sure if that was on purpose, but the thumbnail would've stuck out more in my opinion if it had maybe you in it... Like I said I love the new content, the new studio build out is insane! You were one of the main reasons I picked up golf again after giving it up as a kid I can't believe how far the channels have come...

When all’s said and done, the SC Newport is only a blatant copy of the Ping Anser
