Fascinating. Thanks for bringing this story to our attention. Like most Kreigsmarine the Deutschland / Lutzow had a checkered career being laid up by the Kreigsmarine later in the war. She escaped the gruesome fate of the battleships and most of her sister ships.
@Thorr-kl6jl Жыл бұрын
The three Panzerschiffe ("Pocket Battleships") were Deutschland (later renamed Lutzow), Admiral Graf Spee, and Admiral Scheer. The damaged Admiral Graf Spee was scuttled off of Montevideo, Uruguay, on Dec 17, 1939. Most of the crew returned to Germany, via neutral nations. Admiral Sheer completed a war cruise in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans during 1940-41, sinking 17 British ships. Admiral Sheer was sunk by a British air attack, on April 9, 1945, while at anchor in Kiel harbor. Lutzow was sunk by a British air attack, on April 16, 1945, while at anchor in Swinemunde harbor. Some of the ship's guns were still able to fire at advancing Communist Red Army troops, until the Lutzow was totally abandoned.

Although my grandfather didn’t mention this incident, he was a crewman on one of the torpedo boats, he did mention that the German navy helped to evacuate the Spanish Royal family, ensuring they were under the control of Franco’s forces. A side note on the medals. Any Germans who participated in the Spanish Civil War and were decorated accordingly, were not allowed to display those medals if they continued with the Bundeswehr, and no denazified decorations were ever produced.

Franco didn’t exactly reciprocate after hitlers help in the Spanish civil war. Perhaps dr Felton can do an episode on why not.
@jackgates6949 Жыл бұрын
Because Franco was a devout Catholic and abhorred the Nazis. He was forced to accept help from Hitler since the political Left in many countries, including the USA, controlled the narrative. Hitler was also not a fan of Franco and never liked or trusted him.

@@cornellkirk8946 Nah just old people who can't work the internet watch it. Streaming platforms/youtube are way bigger and growing, TV is dying. He's much better off being on youtube than ona TV channel, his format doesn't even suit TV where they want 30 minute/1 hour shows, the current history channels that would show WW2 stuff would offer him a few hundred grand contract for 30 episodes, he's making way more in youtube ad revenue. Even documentary streaming platforms like curiosity stream can offer him more money than a TV channel like yesterday. Look at the ratings for the various history channels, they average sub 100k views outside of prime time hours, that's why the history channel stopped showing them and moved to reality tv. He has zero growth potential on TV, online his growth potential is massive. TV is losing viewers as older people die off, young people stream everything on their phones/tablets. People like you still seem to think being on TV is a big deal like it used to be, it's really not. Advertisers on youtube pay him way more money than TV would because they know exactly what his audience demographics is using youtube analytics so the return on their investment is high, they can also see directly where their customers are comming from, something they can't do when they buy a block of ads on TV.

My grandmother was evacuated from Valencia port in HMS Douglas to HMS London in Barcelona during the spanish civil war. She later boarded the mixed ship Hakkon Maru who took her to Lisbon. The latter was sunk in WWII in the Formosa strait in an air attack. They had to flee Madrid after a spanish Republican air force sergeant made a death threat to my great grand father, a portuguese diplomat living in Madrid. Their home, although being under portuguese diplomatic protection, was raided a few hours after the death threat. They were lucky to take refuge in the American Embassy that sped them to Valencia the followinng day with a safe pass document and an embassy worker by train. Such was the lawlessness. Another one of my relatives spent some hours in a Madrid "Cheka" , a soviet inspired torture and detention centre, modeled using VChK guidelines. A few of them in Madrid and Barcelona were actually run by soviet VChK officers. They appeared early in the war.
