Posterity has cast Adolf Hitler as a ruthless warlord and inspired strategist. His blitzkrieg victory over France, Europe's leading military power, stunned the world and completed the Third Reich's conquest of Western Europe. But the Führer may have had the intuition, but he was not the author of the victorious and unprecedented campaign plan.
Hitler was certainly a war leader. But his pride and his mortifying ideology blinded him. In the course of the conflict, the self-proclaimed strategist turned out to be an amateur whose mistakes plunged Germany into the abyss of disaster.
Documentary: HISTORY UNCOVERED - Episode 1: Hitler, a military genius?

You're right... I don't care what rank he was, the man survived 4 years on the front lines in WW1 and that's not something anyone should ever ignore or underestimate. He knew personally what the life of a peasant grunt was like, saw the level of suffering that the lowly masses in the mud face - due to the aristocracy. Apparently he learned nothing of value. Pretty good documentary, however one issue that arises from using existing documentaries that contain errors as source material is the perpetuation of those errors. Manstein did not single-handedly create the 'sickle-stroke' invasion plan - he had the idea for it in basic form, but worked out its fine details with Guderian. Manstein was never a tank commander and he needed Guderian to shape the plan into something feasible for tanks. Furthermore, having Guderian sign off on the plan increased its validity as a real option with the OKW. That famous sequence of the Panzer 1 driving through the river is footage from a training exercise, not the battle. There is some footage here purportedly showing motorized divisions moving toward France during the first stages of the invasion, however in fact that footage is Ewald von Kleist's motorized divisions in the Soviet Union during the battle of the Sea of Azov.

Very true. Numerous myths abound because historians and documentaries keep the myths alive. Much of these myths are from German generals trying to lay the blame for everything on H. A perfect example of this is everything about staying radical. It's much more complex than just "Hitler not letting Paulus retreat"

It was Manstein's Plan though. After several changes (Following the first after the German plane crash in Belgium carrying docs with the original plan), it was finally Halder who revised it - the official name being Aufmarschanweisung N°4, Fall Gelb. Halder anyway didn't like Manstein and the original plan was made by Halder which was rejected by Hitler. The final plan was given to Halder but he was ordered to follow Manstein's thinking.

In short it could be summarised to the same mistake that dictators through history seem to have made: underestimate your enemy, overestimate your own chances/capabilities. Had Hitler listened to the advice of his generals and actually acted according to their advice especially when it came to Eastern front, the war could have ended differently. Hitler wasted so much manpower and equipment into such useless things like siege of Leningrad and assaulting and keeping Stalingrad that by avoiding these two mistakes as well as not trying to take Moscow agaisnt the winter, he could have saved hundreds of thousands soldiers

1:43-1:50 "... and the United Kingdom hasn't been conquered for nine hundred years". No wonder. The United Kingdom was created in 1801. Even Great Britain has not been in existence for 900 years because was established in 1707. Perhaps the bloke is making confusion between England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom. Lots of people don't know the diference. However, "the British Isles were invaded multiple times in recorded history - twice by Romans, once by Anglo-Saxons and Jutes, and at least twice by Scandinavians/Vikings (three times if you count William I as a viking). England had been also invaded by French and Dutch. Ireland had been invaded by both Vikings and English." "England had been conquered by Romans, Anglo-Saxons, and large parts were conquered by Vikings. The final conquest was by William I - a descendant of Rollo, first Viking King of Normandy. Northern Ireland was conquered by the British." (Anton Sachs, in Quora)

this is actually horrific, my grandma was alive, still is, in the times of Hitler, she was a child yet got traumatized for life. She saw and lived through her friends getting murdered, she had to hide, people she knew were being sent to Siberia, few years back she told me all about it, her life is pretty insane and sad. Her father died in the war as she told. TW: She also told me this one thing I can't get off my mind, she was clear about the details, snow was always as high as her knees, it was extremely cold, she was walking with a few other kids she used to know, they found something shiny in or on the snow I don't recall, she wanted to go for a toilet break, obviously they were in a forest so there was nowhere to go, so she went further and hid behind the trees, while her friends I guess, were looking at the thing, little did they know it was a bomb, I have no idea of how it worked or what it was, but after they picked it up or triggered it somehow, they blew up. She came back, lucky to be alive, after hearing the blow just to find pieces of her friends bodies that were left, she told me more details about the body parts and gore but I'm not gonna talk about it. Honestly she's really strong and not even my related grandma, but since I live with her I count her as one, her life is horrifying, but all she says is that it's real.

Hitler did not pursue further in Dunkirk not because of a mistake. He did not pursue to massacre the trapped allies because he was a national socialist who considered Brits and French as his brother Aryans. Hitler hoped that Britain would come to reason and stop the war if he showed mercy in Dunkirk, but to no avail. We must remember that it was Britain and France who declared war on Germany and started WW2. Hitler never wanted war, only to liberate the German people which were trapped inside Poland and Czech Republic, after Versailles Treaty had given German terrotories to other countries, leaving thus millions of Germans trapped under regimes oppressive and hostile to German minorities, with numerous racially motivated attacks against ethnic Germans.

I saw a documentary where they were discussing why the allies never attempted to assassinate Hitler. One of the reasons was that his strategies were helping the allies win. If the generals took over the fight would be harder.

42:45 "if not for those, traders we would have won long ago." Well gee if only Hillter would have read some history. He would have learned that Empires are not build in years but in decades and centuries. Attacking Russia, declaring war on America, and wasting what limited resources on fruitless campaigns. Is what lead to his downfall. Classic narcists always blaming others for his failure. If he wanted to win, then he needed to do the following. 1st: eliminate the British Army during the Battle of Dunkirk. 2nd: Arrest control of the French navy from the French. Then us it to destroy the British home fleet. 3rd: invade port smith to secure a foothold for airpower. Then use that foothold to build up combat power. 4th: With the control of Portsmouth firmly in control of the Nazi forces. Establish air superiority in the local air space. 5th: push north to London. 6th: once England is forced into a treaty of subordination. Then you disband its military and establish garrison forces in every county. 7th: Encourage the Russians to Fight the Japanese. By gifting India to the Russians. In exchange for a military alliance. 8th: Do not declare war on the United States then do everything to prevent an attack on the United States.
