Love the 2:1 rule of thumb, I never realized that. I also loved the fact that you focused on wedges because thinking of winds as "one-club" or "two-club" etc. based on just wind speed ignores the launch and spin of the different clubs in the bag. Best 15 minutes I spent today!

Another valuable video, thank you! This really brought home something that we might know intellectually but haven’t always implemented effectively on the course. I had a great chance to set up a birdie on a tight par four with a front pin last week with some wind behind me, but was reluctant to take less club. Tried taking something off with a shorter swing and the ball flew well past the pin and released into the fringe at the back of the green, leaving a long, downhill first putt. But I know what I’ll do the next time I have that kind of wind behind me. 😁 Thanks again, guys, really great content.

Excellent video with very practical advice. So an extra 20 yards into the wind and ten less with the wind at your back plus condition of the greens, spin, descent angle, elevation, etc. So do we need a new TXG golf calculator app? No pressure Ian.
@babyoilrallying5 жыл бұрын
Depends on wind speed, it's actually 2:1 ratio, so you will be hurt twice as much as you will gain, it could be 40 yards and 20 or 10 and 5.

2:1 is such a good rule of thumb - great tidbit to log into the brain sponsored by the Titleist AVX Ball
@jcripley54255 жыл бұрын
The AVX ball is really excellent on windy days. It didn't score well in the MGS test overall but on a windy day it's going in my bag. I hit some shots in a gale force day that were jaw dropping with the AVX. It really cuts the wind.

This vid is clutch! My coach told me to pick some grass and let it fall. For every yard the grass goes back into your face, add 4 yards of club. Going away from you... add 2 yards. Since you don't know the exact wind speed during a round, would you say a method like this is useful?
@WatchMeEDC2 жыл бұрын
I hope that you both have played Pebble Beach by this time and now understand how difficult it is to get the ball close to that pin position on 18… and if you go long right on the green what a terrifying putt it is back downhill with crazy hard right break at the pin. Left of the pin, putting uphill is the place to be! Great vid as always.

My problem with wind is more specifically around side wind or wind that is oblique to the direction of the ball flight. Judging distance on those are particularly difficult for me. Any tips there would be helpful. Great content as always fellas. 👏

Great question. I always play it as same yardage unless trying to hold up ball into the side wind. But would love to hear from the pros.

great stuff as usual guys. would love to see a video on crosswinds, always the toughest for me. i think i remember reading a long time ago that a perpendicular crosswind actually has a headwind component, which makes sense since you have to hit slightly into the crosswind to compensate for it. sorry, i must be channeling DeChambeau... :-)

You know you're watching a lot of golf instruction on YT when you see Matt swing and recognize the waist to waist half wedge style shot ala Larry Cheung. 😃 😄 😅 😆
@jcripley54255 жыл бұрын
Larry's wedge system is so straight forward it really helps simply those awkward distances.
@johnnypenso95745 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I practiced it at the range yesterday for the first time but have no way of measuring the distances there. But I did hit if fairly consistently different distances with my 52/56/60 wedges. Looking forward to putting it into play. Got a golf weekend coming up around the Canadian Open in Hamilton so I have to practice up!! I also found some success with Larry's chipping technique. I've tried a few different things with inconsistent results. Larry's advice of not hinging, not letting the club get ahead of your hands and a simple putting-like stroke made a big difference. New fan here.

I am a cyclist. This closely parallels with wind resistance in cycling. If you want to increase your speed by 50%, it takes 100% more power. However, when going with the wind for example, a 10MPH tail wind does not translate into 10MPH more speed for the same effort.
@seanmeyer55535 жыл бұрын
It would be interesting to see the effect of a crosswind and how a fade and draw play
@jacobmccain80825 жыл бұрын
I dont mind playing into the wind due to my low penetrating ball flight. Downwind is a crapshoot because half the time the wind knocks my ball out of the air vs helping it fly!
@TTT-Turbo5 жыл бұрын
Ian, you will need to bring Matt over to Scotland for some golf down the coast or lanark golf club because lanark is high and windy constantly. 30 40mph winds on good days lol. Tough tough tough. Good video tho because I play with some people who have not got a clue what to hit when windy.
@wallstreetoneil5 жыл бұрын
And given Matt's length, but more importantly his seeming ability to also feel wedge distances, he should consider joining DJ and adding a 62 / 64 wedge to the bag to give himself another important scoring club.

I don't know how you'd do it, but I'd love to see if different dimple styles on golf balls have any affect on shots, wind or no wind. I believe Mizuno's RB balls claim to have an innovative dimple geometry, and I imagine Callaway's hex dimples may also behave slightly different than something like the ProV1.

Would be curious whats better in a crosswind. Change aim direction and let wind take it, or air straight hit a draw\fade to hold center.

For me personally, I would hit a cut shot left to right around the bunker. I can take a full swing and keep a lot of spin. The power fade flight path eats up the extra yardage and negates the wind a bit.

how about a Bubba Watson test where you wet the ball ? A mud ball test would be interesting as well although the sim screen may take issue. You could do it at the range. Use sticky mud. Also a cross wind test. Shape the ball to counter or just aim off with standard shot?
@littlesmitty5 жыл бұрын

Why didn't you just rig the machine to calculate the ball flight 3 times on a single hit to show the difference that the wind makes? Add in cross-breezes too and you'll be able to show really easily what the club would do normally vs what the club does in wind.

@jonasandersen21265 жыл бұрын
Just one note for people interested; in windplay the it will be close to 1:1 ratio at lower wind speeds with smaller distances. It becomes hard at higher windspeeds and/or longer distance shots. So you might have a wind that get your wedge 97 in to the wind (on a 100 shot) And 102-103 with the wind behind you :) But as a general rule it will always hurt you more than it will help you, in terms of distance.
@Wolfpack32-5 жыл бұрын
I am very curious why you wouldn't have tried to hit a little more of a draw into that pin location? This would increase spin and stopping power! I play from the other side and all could picture in my mind was a 94 yard cut shot, with 5 yds of curve, just right of the pin. I know Matt could hit a little draw into that ridge! Jealous of what you guys are doing! Keep it up!
