DATING is tricky at the best of times - but even harder when you have a disease with as much stigma surrounding it as HIV. Las Vegas-based Lexi Gibson, 30, was born with HIV but wasn’t diagnosed until she was two and her mother passed away from the condition when Lexi was four. Lexi was told by doctors that she wouldn’t live beyond the age of 13 and was bullied badly throughout her school years. Huge improvements in medication mean nowadays Lexi only has to take one pill daily which leaves the virus at completely undetectable levels in her system, but the stigma about HIV remains - making dating a challenge. Past partners have feared catching the illness or tried to keep her HIV status a secret, with one potential suitor fleeing mid-date after finding out about Lexi’s diagnosis. However, Lexi is now a life coach, passionate HIV advocate and founder of the non-profit StopHate Educate - and found love with musician Jade, 26. Jade says she felt worried about Lexi’s health when she was first told, but now understands that Lexi’s zero 'viral load’ means there’s no possibility of Lexi passing on HIV.

Dating is hard cause when there are so many people, a lot of people want someone better. It's a viscous cycle that can only be broken with an open minded personality, common sense, a willingness to give someone a chance and keeping realistic standards. Anyone can find a partner this way.

@Hannah Myers Exactly. I have known plenty of people who have had STI’s. They would mention it to me cuz I used to be in the medical field. The only difference is some are unfortunately incurable, so those who have had curable infections get treated and go on with life, so most ppl don’t know they had them. Then there are less fortunate folks who get HIV, herpes, etc. I would never judge, things happen, and everyone deserves proper medical care and deserve to live without judgment.

@Ephaistos Vanguard Actually you would, you’ve likely met a psychopath & don’t even know it. Do you even know what a psychopath is? It’s someone with antisocial personality disorder. They’re charismatic, charming, smooth talking, kind - they’re also pathological liars who have no remorse for who they hurt in their quest to get to where they need or want to be in life. Comments like yours are uneducated & slightly ignorant. You wouldn’t know this lovely girl has HIV, just like you wouldn’t know you’ve met someone with APD. What you’re actually insinuating is you wouldn’t treat someone the same who outwardly struggles with mental health problems, which is a whole host of messed up. (And if you’re going to go down the route of ‘i was referring to serial killers / rapists etc’ - how would you know you’ve met one of them?! If you’re psychic you wouldn’t go near them in the first place).

Most people who have HIV got it through no fault of their own. A lot of people do not reveal their positive status to their sexual partners or they don’t ever get tested and go around spreading it. It doesn't matter how you got it, we should never discriminate. Born with it or getting it later in life, it doesn't matter. If you take the meds, it's undetectable and there's no transmission. As simple as that!! It only takes 5 minutes to learn about it, and if people still discriminate, they are the problem, because they want to discriminate.

When I was a baby I had blood transfusions. Multiple before a transplant. When I was 12 I remember going for blood tests for HIV because they didn’t test the blood before my transfusions. Education has come so so far. The lab tech wore a hazmat suit. My blood went into a metal container with “BIOHAZARD” written all over it. There was so much discrimination, and still is. My heart goes to this beautiful soul! Live your beautiful life and be happy! ❤️🇨🇦

It’s so easy to get tested and so easy to protect yourself from contracting it in the first place! I can’t imagine being a parent and passing it onto a child. I can’t imagine how awful that must have been for her mom 😢 so sad that her mom lost her fight with aids too. That’s another thing that people don’t know, hiv doesn’t always mean you’re going to die from aids. The virus can live for so long without it ever developing into aids.

This is why Princess Diana was so loved, because she raised *so* much awareness for Aids & HIV when she was alive (both in westernised countries & beyond). No one carried it on once she passed away, sadly. People were absolutely petrified of anyone who had an AIDS / HIV diagnosis back in the 80’s + - it held this huge stigma, just like this lovely young woman is explaining. You couldn’t share cutlery or cups / mugs with them, hold hands, water fountains, they were excluded from friendship groups & families. It was awful. She is right, they didn’t have the medication back then that they do now (sending so much love to her for the loss of her mother 💗), but I love that people like this young woman are spreading AND raising awareness of the condition. Beautiful couple, & I wish you both every bit of happiness for your futures 🥰💗 xx
