@theloniousMac4 жыл бұрын
Those who don’t study and preserve history are truly doomed to repeat it. First, you know very little about Harriet Tubman. I suspect you saw that abomination of a movie and now you think you know something. Next, consider that one of the primary ways of controlling the slaves was to strip them of memories, names, culture, language, belongings, and history. These assholes destroying statues are mostly simple minded idiots, but the hands of the puppet masters behind them are seeking to destabilize the culture of the United States as well and that doesn’t do anything to change slavery, or fix racism. That is about attacking my country utilizing psychological methods. Destroying statues and monuments and changing street names and so on, it’s cultural warfare. It is designed to demoralize. “...Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right...” - George Orwell 1984 And ultimately that statue is as much a part of black history in this country as any black statue or monument. It reminds us what happened. We were there some of us fought on both sides of that war. Our blood was spilled for the South and our blood was Spilled for the North. We should never forget. But noooo... little whinny leftists feeling are hurt. They need to grow up and realize history is far broader than just proclaiming this is racist and that is racist.

@AV574 жыл бұрын
master universe, firstly, good history lessons rarely take place by looking at statues. So pretending that without the statues the history will disappear is just silly at this point. It’s not like we’re burning down the Library of Alexandria here. Secondly, your analogy is way off, because churches (in proper liberal democracies) have separation of church and state and religious iconography is not permitted on public land-let alone courthouses. Of course, churches have every right to place statues of their religious figures on their own land, but not on public land. The overwhelming criticism of the monuments centers around the fact that they are on public land, prominently glorifying the virtues of the Confederacy for all citizens to see whether they find it treasonous or not. Some of us do not want rebels and traitors glorified on our public land.

@Peter Grahame I'm guessing being a terrible racist is better than being good at racism! Are you confused?😂
@AV574 жыл бұрын
Peter Grahame, Lincoln was complicated. Like most successful politicians they change their stances with the winds of political trends. He appeased a heavily racist Illinois by saying moderately racist things so that they wouldn’t immediately dismiss him as an insane abolitionist. As his career progressed, so did his the softness of his racism, until at the end he sounded like an egalitarian abolitionist. Who knows what he would have said if he had lived to 75. Lincoln was no saint, but he was effective. The Confederacy made it as plain as day that their primary motivation for seceding and fighting the federal troops was to preserve their institution of slavery. This was made clear in the secession papers, the letters the Confederate officers wrote to their loved ones, the letters the regular enlisted men wrote, the letters that were written to the Confederate soldiers (mainly by their wives), and in the bulk of Southern newspapers. It is downright anti-intellectual at this point in time to claim that the South was in any way progressing towards a system of even gradual black liberation. In fact, several Confederate politicians spoke on the Congressional floor that their most immediate concern after defeating the Union was to secure western frontier land, Mexican land, Cuban land, and to quickly make them slaves territories as well. They had no intention of giving it up. Yes, some northern states were slave states. They may have been racist morons, but at least they were patriotic enough not to kill their fellow countrymen just because they didn’t like blacks. You do understand that political parties don’t actually have concrete political platforms that they will never bend on or completely disavow, don’t you? Political parties exist to win elections-that’s it. Whether that be by taking last decades platform and using it as toilet paper to get wins, the Democrats or Republicans will do it. Of course, the Democratic and Republican Parties have had some massive platform changes in the last 160 years or so as the technology, morality, economy, and opportunities have changed.

That flag is something that is special to the solidiers. They fought for civil liberty and I believe the flag should be left alone because it has a different meaning to them. Monuments and other artifacts are being removed for true unknown reasons. I live in Toronto Canada and we are under the British rule still. We have to pledge to our Queen as she is still the head of state. When we are sworn in for anything we have to pledge to our Majesty. These things have a history and mean something (good or bad). We can't change history, but history should be shown and told. Removing flags and statues is killing the past of how we are now in the future. I'm a mixed colored man, British born with German/Indian parents. I love knowing my families history on both ends. Good or bad.

That flag is something that is special to the TRAITORS. Their reasons for fighting is a matter of written record. The reason they fought is outlined to some extent in every article of succession AS THE PRESERVATION OF SLAVERY.
@AV574 жыл бұрын
They did not fight for civil liberty. They explicitly stated in the secession documents repeatedly that they fought to preserve the institution of slavery. The officers, the enlisted men, and the wives of the South all wrote at the time of the war letters expressing their disgust and fear at the idea of free blacks walking amongst them. We even have documents showing that the Confederate politicians gleefully spoke of gobbling up frontier land and since they were no longer a part of the Union, they wouldn’t have to worry about the Northerners outvoting them over the slavery issue. They even had designs of invading Mexico and Cuba to bring slavery there. Please, do not fall for this revisionist Confederate crap.

@@AV57 Yes I understand your points. However, all flags around the world came with massive human losses. Good or bad. In order to establish any flag around the world it came with a price. Death and destruction. The British flag waves high and proud, yet they basically ruled the world (including America) at one point. I am British. The America flag is the same scenario. They invaded many countries through historic events and brought genocide and other catastrophic deathly elements. We can sit here all day and dispute one flag after another, however, the major point here is leave the Confederate flag as all other flags around the world are left alone.

It’s not a myth. The Lost Cause narrative is a myth. Read the documents that the Confederate States produced. The main cause was always slavery. And I highly doubt your CSA ancestors were more opposed to slavery than your union ones. This was done to further damaged the confederate cause. The back end of this executive order was to halt the fugitive slave order law since after emancipation was issued run away slaves in the north could not be consider fugitive slaves captured and return to their masters. You also should know soon after emancipation Lincoln established black military units,i.e. the famous 54th Massachusetts unit (see movie Glory).

It's really sad that the history of our Country is being erased. Like it or not the civil war was brother vs brother. Family member vs. Family member. North vs South. These war monuments should be left alone an cherished. Instead we have a bunch of ignorant lawmakers standby an allow this. All Americans have equal rights, before you judge someone or call them a racist maybe you should take a look at yourself? If you are lazy an want something for free, Your the problem . Nothing in life is free unless you were born into wealth. The majority of Americans work for what they have.
