HK SP5 vs The Clones heckler & koch sp 5 mp h&k sp5k sporting pistol mp5

First of all, a big shout out to what I call "the big 4" roller lock artisan builders who have helped keep the MP5 platform relevant in the commercial market through their years of work in producing some reliable/nice products. These big 4 are NOT the mass producers of cheaper product to hit price points in the market. Without some of these pioneers work in making good product available to the non LEO/Military market, the HK SP5 may have never made an appearance and the HK94 may still be the only real HK choice. In this video, I will briefly point out some problem areas (keeping brief on purpose as the list could run quite long!!!) and what you DON'T have to worry about when you purchase a HK SP5.

I don't know if mine (AP5p) is perfect, there could be some weird out of spec thing I have not discovered BUT.... it eats whatever I feed it, puts bullets where I want them and (after wearing off some of the coating) my Lugs accept my Tri Lug mounted suppressor just fine. I'd buy another. H&K better? Probably. How much "better" do I need, tho? And is it 2G better?

I bought a clone because I've never bought anything made in Germany that worked well. I've had loads of German lenses and several cars. I will do almost anything not to buy German or USA made.

There are some respectable clones that will give you satisfaction at the range, but from an investment standpoint an HK is where it’s at. I’m very fortunate to have two SP5’s, one unfired, and an SP5K. They are impossibly accurate and truly live up to all of the hype. These are expensive guns, yes, but in addition to making your trip to the range flawless and fun, several past HK offerings have proven that they’re better than $ in the bank.

Guns are bad investments especially if you're a true collector. A true collector rarely ever sells their guns. They die and their heirs rarely have the passion of the collector & sell off the collection at bargain ised gun prices. So much for the investment (I know, I buy plenty of them). I do agree most H&K's not only hold their value, but increase over time.

@@frankm2385 preach I’ve seen car collectors die and their collection sell for bargains. You buy an hk to shoot not to be a safe queen, keep worrying about investment when you don’t even know if you’ll wake up the next day.

Congrats on both your guns! Don't be fooled by marketing....the HK tooling used that is 60 years old and not maintained by HK for your MKE is not in the league of your real HK SP5. Also, the steel hardness for the barrel, bolt head, and locking piece are no where near the same league as HK and are no where near as durable or reliable. The MKE is a good look alike made in the 3rd world on 3rd world machineing....sell the MKE now while prices are hot since guns aren't available and get another HK SP5 when prices return to below MSRP....you will thank me later.....just speaking the truth that some don't like to hear!

Btw Derek can I ask you a question about the PTR K? Would you know if the cocking tube is welded or not? I only owned a full sized PTR in the past and don't think it was welded but forgot as I got rid of it, but heard they are cutting costs on their current guns by using aluminum trigger parts etc. A friend was asking so thought I might ask ya.

Hi Hans, I am no expert on PTR guns or what they do differently at any one time with their manufacturing but I can tell you that any roller lock with a welded cocking tube to the front sight tree should be absolutely avoided or purchased at a price that the mistake can be corrected.....cheers

Other than my 2 Mp5's (a Navy and preban SD) I built from parts kits, 2 SP5's? I also own an MKE, PTR and a POF. All feel and shoot the same imo only thing the HK has is maybe fit and finish and the $$$ name, but all 3 clones I own are pretty close to identical in quality and performance. Tho I do like the welded rail on my PTR as it sits lower than the claw mount but others seem to hate it. You can interchange all the parts between the HK's and the clones, yes I have tried. ; ) Also the PTR being US made has no worries about stupid 922r nonsense, I also hate braces or any grey area item. I SBR em. So either form 4's or form 1's all some of my rifles but all my subguns including my PS90, Mpx, BT9 and BT45 etc. Though not my last SP5 as did not want to engrave it and I love shooting old school sling stock style. Don't knock the Mp5 clones their just like my Tommybuilt XM8, G36 conversion and his T36k clone its damn near a perfect copy of the G36E and again most of these cloned Mp5's are spot on, though I draw the line on the Century guns you really have to careful if buying one of their AP5's as you may get a good one or a bad one also CAI is not known for their CS. My personal favorite clone would be the PTR 2nd would be the MKE.. Pardon the long comment stay safe people and keep fighting for our rights.

the biggest problems with clones are not the cosmetic type....example being sight tabs not cut properly and not allowing optic mounts to fit or even worse....crooked....you'll see a rear sight have to be moved way to one side on a gun that otherwise looks pretty.....clones are always buyer beware but some are excellent

Sorry bud... I know you love your "real" mp5... But my MKE ap5, has better welds and a nicer finish. I have over 1000rnds zero problems and I paid $1100 for it. I'm not a collector... All I want is an "mp5" that shoot reliably and I definitely have one. The left over thousands, will go towards ammo and accessories 👍 I can email you pics , if you would like to see my claims .

I also have a "third world" MKE AP5 and the welds are perfect. It's not that I can't afford a "real" HK, I just refuse to pay 3X for something for bragging rights. This guy would have more subs if he wasn't so snooty about clones.

What are your thoughts on the POF imports? Mine came a bit rough finish wise from factory but has performed well.

well.....there is no comparison to HK....if one wants a budget copy of a MP5, then maybe POF is of interest....there just is no comparison in quality, fit, finish etc.....play with your POF and if you like the MP5 platform, consider buying quality that won't let you down.

What are your thoughts on the Zenith version? I have had two of them. With the news of the HK I am considering selling mine. Regardless I will be buying the HK weather I sell the zenith or not.

Kevin McMullen I’d SBR the HK because you will never want to sell it so you might as well get it in the configuration it is made to be! The MSRP in $2,799 and right now there is 30 years of pent up demand that supply can’t fill! More coming after the 1st of the year!!!!

Kevin McMullen there are pros and cons to each way. Not knowing your situation it is impossible to answer that question for you. Efile transfer times for a trust can vary widely depending on the details of the trust while efile form 1 times have currently been 2-3 weeks

Hey Derek, I'm curious between the new HK and the DT which do you prefer? I have three of Joe's guns and love them but now I kind of want an SP5 just because well...its an HK.

NDSAM K great question! It really isn’t about preferring one to the other vs having one that came off the same line as all MP5s, in the same German plant, and by the same German hands! The DT guns are absolutely fantastic but you still need the real thing in your collection!

I've got one more question if your don't mind, which stock option do you prefer to run on the M/SP5/DT54? A2, A3, UMP folder or another? I currently have A2, A3F, and UMP folder(longer version). #10 Thumbs up even if you are on the HK Shooting Team. The real deal HK’s will always be the best despite what people pretend. I do have a Zenith Z5RS from 2017 that I put next to a full auto HK MP5 to examine the crappiness of the Zenith and I thought the welds and fit and finish and everything were identical to the genuine HK MP5. I was surprised. I do not think the Zenith has a chrome lined barrel like these new HK’s claim. I have had a crappy PTR91 GI that was so bad I had to send it in 4 times before they gave me a new rifle. I wish HK would make the G3KA4

Thanks! As you said, there is NO comparison to the real deal. There is a place for the clone market and I salute the few that make a really, really nice product. HK will always be the benchmark that others try to achieve. Even when a clone gets all the specs right at completion of build, it is still not a HK from the HK factory, serialized HK, proofed HK, and imported HK. It also won't be valued as HK in the future. At the end of the day, you said it perfectly...."The real deal HK's will ALWAYS be the best despite what people pretend."

I too have an HK SP5 “MP5” clone. I wish my SP5 had an actual push pin in the front of the trigger pack housing rather than the “Clipped and Pin” bullshit. It be nice if it was also marked MP5 rather and SP5.. Other than than that, I still think that my HK SP5 is as close as you can get to an actual MP5. Yes, I consider my SP5 a “CLONE” because it’s not an actual MP5 (IMO).

Gonna wrack a lot of laughter up here, but my Todd Bailey Coharie CA89 is still running like a Swiss watch. I've been very tempted by the SP-5, and watched your video to see if it would be money well spent. Went through my Coharie as you went through the SP-5 and my welds are every bit as nice as the HK. Mine must have been made on the right day of the week, as I know enough people had issues with these guns that few will touch them. Mine has worked since day 1 and has thousands and thousands of rounds through it. Nobody did more to bring the MP-5 clone to the American market than TB. Dude deserves credit there. On the other hand, nobody, except possibly Century, has pissed off as many people too.

Despite his lacking reputation, Todd did do a lot for the clone market. No need to dump your CA89 since it works, but you should definitely look at the full-size SP5 as you will understand when you get it in your hands.Cheers!

hi sir, for mag couplers I use HK of course!!!! In all seriousness, the HK mag coupler is by far the best compared to some of the inexpensive after market plastic and aluminum ones that are out there. The HK coupler is indestructible and easy to get mags in and out of with a simple throw of a tensioned lever. In a pinch or for the economy class ticket, I have used duct tape quite successfully but be sure to make a spacer (can be done with tape too!) as well....works great!

You may get some thumbs down from those who are in denial over buying the real deal vs a clone. Is the SP5k discontinued? Was the rail included with the SP5 like the SP5k? Think HK will release 40round mags for purchase? It would be nice to have larger mags for run and gun events.

I would absolutely expect this and it doesn't bother me one bit! I have been a HK lover since the 80s and know quite a lot about the roller lock platform. I am just trying to state some facts to provide education as it makes me sick to see sooooo much bad information from other sources that should probably stick to talking about Glocks, AR15s, and airsoft! SP5K is not discontinued. No rail included with the SP5 which is a good move for 2 main reasons. First, it means the price is less than if a rail was included.......Second, there are several mounting solutions that vary in height and ultimately people have widely different opinions on what each individually prefers. As far as 40 round mags from HK Germany, I doubt you will see that released. There are currently 40 round mags in existence that are very good and some that are quite bad. Buyer beware
